Book Synopsis Innovation, Between Science and Science Fiction by : Thomas Michaud
Download or read book Innovation, Between Science and Science Fiction written by Thomas Michaud and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fantasy and science fiction are both involved in the process of innovation in techno-scientific societies. Long regarded as a hindrance to rationality, and to science, science fiction has become the object of praise in recent decades. Innovative organizations use science fiction to stimulate the creativity of their teams, and more and more entrepreneurs are using its influence to develop innovation. Scientific practice relies in part on an imaginary dimension. The mapping of the technical imagination of science fiction has become an important strategic issue, as has its patentability. The conquest of space, the construction of cyberspace and virtual reality, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies are all at the center of futuristic fictions that participate in scientific speeches and discoveries.

Book Synopsis L'imaginaire politique by : LAMIZET Bernard
Download or read book L'imaginaire politique written by LAMIZET Bernard and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book L'eau, enjeux politiques et théologiques, de Sumer à la Bible written by Stéphanie Anthonioz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a corpus of royal inscriptions and literary texts, with special emphasis on those that are mythological and biblical, stretching over several millennia from the early days of Sumer to the Biblical period, in order to determine the ways in which the concept of water was used, in particular the way it functions in the political and theological ideology of the time. Three literary motifs are the object of a careful study : the crossing of water, the flood and the water of abundance. Though their study shows diversity in evolution, transmission and reception, it appears that their function is common at the heart of the Mesopotamian political theology of royal mediation.

Book Synopsis Responding to the Human Rights Deficit by : Karin Arts
Download or read book Responding to the Human Rights Deficit written by Karin Arts and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the existence of a wide range of human rights instruments and procedures, human rights violations still abound. The authors of this book address this so-called human rights deficit, and the possible responses to it, from various disciplinary angles and mostly in the context of development. They explore the reasons for the continuation of economic, social and/or political exclusion and human rights violations at large. They also present keys for redressing the human rights deficit. The role of law, and questions of universality, inclusion and exclusion are central themes in this book. The need to take up civil and political rights and economic social and cultural rights on equal footing is recognized by several of the authors, and so is that of bridging the public-private divide. Specific contributions address among others the importance of human rights training and education, the role of NGO's in a globalizing world, minorities, gender and women's rights, accountability of multinational corporations, and the problem of human trafficking.
Book Synopsis The Origins of Nazi Violence by : Enzo Traverso
Download or read book The Origins of Nazi Violence written by Enzo Traverso and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the half-century since the appearance of Hannah Arendt's seminal work The Origins of Totalitarianism, innumerable historians have detailed the history of the Nazi years. Now, in a brilliant synthesis of this work, Enzo Traverso situates the extermination camps as the final, terrible moment in European modernity's industrialization of killing and dehumanization of death. Traverso upends the conventional presentation of the Holocaust as an inexplicable anomaly, navigating an excess of antecedents both technical and cultural. Deftly tracing a complex lineage - the guillotine and machine gun, the prison and assembly line, as well as widespread ideologies of racial supremacy and colonial expansion - Traverso reveals that the ideas that coalesced at Auschwitz came from Europe's mainstream and not its margins.
Book Synopsis Exercices d'histoire des religions by : Philippe Borgeaud
Download or read book Exercices d'histoire des religions written by Philippe Borgeaud and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercices d’histoire des religions is a collection of the most important articles published by Philippe Borgeaud during his career as the professor of history of religions at the University of Geneva (Switzerland). These nineteen studies showcase the many reflections of the Swiss scholar of religion on the categories and tools used to describe and compare such evanescent concepts as “religions”, “myths” and “rituals”, and his methodology for a critical and comparative study of ancient and modern religions. Through them, readers will gain a clear understanding of the importance such an approach can wield in the contemporary discussions and dissents about religions.
Book Synopsis Ruling by Schooling Quebec by : Bruce Curtis
Download or read book Ruling by Schooling Quebec written by Bruce Curtis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruling by Schooling Quebec provides a rich and detailed account of colonial politics from 1760 to 1841 by following repeated attempts to school the people. This first book since the 1950s to investigate an unusually complex period in Quebec’s educational history extends the sophisticated method used in author Bruce Curtis’s double-award-winning Politics of Population. Drawing on a mass of archival material, the study shows that although attempts to govern Quebec by educating its population consumed huge amounts of public money, they had little impact on rural ignorance: while near-universal literacy reigned in New England by the 1820s, at best one in three French-speaking peasant men in Quebec could sign his name in the insurrectionary decade of the 1830s. Curtis documents educational conditions on the ground, but also shows how imperial attempts to govern a tumultuous colony propelled the early development of Canadian social science. He provides a revisionist account of the pioneering investigations of Lord Gosford and Lord Durham.

Book Synopsis Religion in History / La religion dans l’histoire by : Michel Despland
Download or read book Religion in History / La religion dans l’histoire written by Michel Despland and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1992-03-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the concept of “religion” in Western tradition has intrigued scholars for years. This important collection of eighteen essays brings further light to the ongoing debate. Three of the invited participants, W.C. Smith, M. Despland and E. Feil, has each previously written impressive books treating this subject; the last two acknowledged the impact and continuing influence of Smith’s work, The Meaning and End of Religion. An introduction and a recapitulation of Smith’s contribution as a scholar set the stage for a retrospective look at the published literature. Contributors then examine the transformation of words (the classical religio to the modern religion), particularities of religion in nineteenth-century France, Troeltsch’s concept of religion, the study of religion from an Asian point of view and the categorization of “World Religions.” The concluding essays elaborate contemporary anthropological, cross-disciplinary, semiological, deconstructive and psychoanalytical methodological approaches to the concept and study of “religion.” Exploring critically different aspects of the concept and study of religion, these provocative essays typically reflect the methodological pluralism currently existing in the field of Religious Studies. Of interest to scholars and students alike, this collection also contains a complete bibliography of W.C. Smith’s publications.
