Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Winner of the American Library in Paris Book Award, 2017 Les Misérables is among the most popular and enduring novels ever written. Like Inspector Javert’s dogged pursuit of Jean Valjean, its appeal has never waned, but only grown broader in its one-hundred-and-fifty-year life. Whether we encounter Victor Hugo’s story on the page, onstage, or on-screen, Les Misérables continues to captivate while also, perhaps unexpectedly, speaking to contemporary concerns. In The Novel of the Century, the acclaimed scholar and translator David Bellos tells us why. This enchanting biography of a classic of world literature is written for “Les Mis” fanatics and novices alike. Casting decades of scholarship into accessible narrative form, Bellos brings to life the extraordinary story of how Victor Hugo managed to write his novel of the downtrodden despite a revolution, a coup d’état, and political exile; how he pulled off a pathbreaking deal to get it published; and how his approach to the “social question” would define his era’s moral imagination. More than an ode to Hugo’s masterpiece, The Novel of the Century also shows that what Les Misérables has to say about poverty, history, and revolution is full of meaning today.

Book excerpt: The story begins in 1815 in Digne, as the peasant Jean Valjean, just released from 19 years' imprisonment in the Bagne of Toulon-five for stealing bread for his starving sister and her family and fourteen more for numerous escape attempts-is turned away by innkeepers because his yellow passport marks him as a former convict. He sleeps on the street, angry and bitter.Digne's benevolent Bishop Myriel gives him shelter. At night, Valjean runs off with Myriel's silverware. When the police capture Valjean, Myriel pretends that he has given the silverware to Valjean and presses him to take two silver candlesticks as well, as if he had forgotten to take them. The police accept his explanation and leave. Myriel tells Valjean that his life has been spared for God, and that he should use money from the silver candlesticks to make an honest man of himself.

Considered to be one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century, it chronicles the lives of several characters, focusing on ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption. It constitutes a profound examination of French history, the nature of law and justice, contemporary urban life, politics, moral philosophy, religion, and the types of romantic and familial love. A veritable masterpiece, "Les Misérables" is a must-read for all lovers of literature. Victor Marie Hugo (1802 - 1885) was a French novelist, dramatist, and poet belonging to the Romantic movement. He is widely hailed as one of the most accomplished and well-known French writers, originally achieving renown for his poetical endeavours-the most notable of which are the volumes "Les Contemplations" and "La Légende des siècles". Outside of his native country, Hugo's best-known works are his novels: "Les Misérables" (1862) and "Notre-Dame de Paris" (1831), commonly known as "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". Aside from his literary achievements, he also produced over 4,000 beautiful drawings and was a prominent campaigner for social and political issues, including abolishing capital punishment. This volume delves into the passionate and tumultuous life of Marius Pontmercy, weaving his personal story with the broader struggles of justice, love, and social upheaval in 19th-century France. In "Marius," readers are introduced to the idealistic and ardent young man, Marius Pontmercy, who is estranged from his royalist grandfather and harbors deep admiration for his late father, a decorated soldier of Napoleon's army. His journey from a sheltered upbringing to the vibrant, revolutionary heart of Paris is both poignant and transformative. Marius's burgeoning awareness of the harsh realities of society and his growing involvement in the revolutionary cause form the crux of his narrative. Amidst the political fervor, Marius encounters Cosette, the beautiful and innocent ward of Jean Valjean. Their love story blossoms in the shadow of impending revolution, providing a tender and hopeful counterpoint to the grim and gritty backdrop of Paris's streets. Their romance is fraught with challenges and misunderstandings, yet it stands as a testament to the enduring power of love in the face of adversity. Victor Hugo's vivid portrayal of the political and social landscape of Paris during this period adds depth and richness to the narrative. The depiction of the revolutionary group Les Amis de l'ABC, of which Marius becomes a passionate member, offers insight into the fervent idealism and desperate struggles of those who fought for freedom and equality. The preparations for the June Rebellion of 1832, with its heroic and tragic elements, are rendered with Hugo's characteristic mastery of detail and emotion. In "Volume III - Marius," themes of love, sacrifice, and social justice are explored with unparalleled depth. Hugo's exploration of Marius's internal conflicts, his romantic devotion to Cosette, and his dedication to his revolutionary ideals create a complex and compelling character whose story resonates deeply with readers. The intertwining of personal and political struggles highlights the intricate and often painful connections between individual lives and broader societal currents. Perfect for lovers of classic literature, historical fiction, and tales of romance and revolution, "Les Misérables Volume III - Marius" continues the epic saga with heart and intensity.
