Certes, un grand nombre d'ouvrages ont été consacres à la conjoncture politico-militaire qui entourait l'allocution radiodiffuséc du général de Gaulle, mais aucun, à ce jour, ne s'était attaché, comme celui-ci, à l'étonnante histoire secrète du texte de cette allocution. Sous les yeux ébahis du lecteur, voilà en effet un texte qui n'en finit pas de se métamorphoser. La version que nous connaissons n'apparaît pas avant le 15 août. La plus fidèle aux intentions du Général date probablement du 16 juin. Le 18, il en circule au moins cinq. La radio en diffuse une, les journaux français une autre, et les journaux anglais une troisième. Quelle est donc la vérité promise par ce texte fondateur de la France Libre ? François Delpla, loin de se borner à la critique textuelle, montre ici que ces variations résultent, en fait, du choc de trois volontés : celle de De Gaulle, de Churchill et de Halifax, le ministre des Affaires étrangères. Le premier veut, d'emblée, incarner la France et disqualifier Pétain. Le second cherche surtout des arguments pour continuer la guerre, a laquelle le troisième souhaiterait mettre un terme. On s'avise aussi, en chemin, que les acteurs de cette journée se sont livrés à une véritable course contre la montre : De Gaulle veut parler avant Pétain, mais il est devancé. De surcroît, il doit se battre pour faire passer son message et n'y parvient véritablement que dans son allocution du 2 juillet. Au lieu d'un simple discours, on découvre alors un processus qui s'étale sur deux semaines. Et c'est ce processus, si lourd de conséquences, qui est ici revisité. Le passé, lui aussi, est rempli de surprises. François Delpla, auteur d'oeuvres sur Churchill et sur Hitler, a déjà étudié la Résistance française sous l'angle des rapports entre mythe et réalité dans Aubrac, les faits et la calomnie (1997).

Parcourant l’Europe occidentale, il se veut méthodologique et initiateur, éclairant une réalité transnationale à l’aide d’études de cas, inscrites dans le temps et l’espace. Until recently, the history of military justice has been largely neglected. As a hybrid concept, it has for many years been the subject of hasty judgments from both military institutions and lawyers. Members of the military institutions kept repeating harsh criticisms while the lawyers kept justifying themselves. This volume brings together 20 contributions that focus on the early 20th century in Western Europe with the aim of examining the tensions, practices and limitations of military justice during the two World Wars. In doing so, it uses a methodological and original approach, from the perspective of transnational reality and uses case studies from a range of countries at different times. The contributions were all presented during multiple seminars held at the Maison des sciences de l’Homme between 2004 and 2008. Using a comparative perspective, these seminars explored the evolution of the military justice system since the 16th century.
