De nouveaux agencements de compétences et de pouvoirs, de pratiques et de savoirs, de valeurs et de normes se dessinent ainsi. Ces reconfigurations de l'espace local de la santé publique, les auteurs de ce livre les ont étudiées à travers une recherche menée dans huit villes de France (Béziers, Brest, Marseille, Metz, Nancy, Rennes, Toulouse, Tours) où des expériences multiples ont été recueillies et analysées. L'approche, pluridisciplinaire, réunit politologues, sociologues, anthropologues et géographes qui en proposent une lecture ouverte. Comment peut-on comprendre cette effervescence? La "nouvelle santé publique ", proclamée ici et là est-elle une réponse, dans l'espace local, à ce que l'on désigne parfois comme la "nouvelle question sociale"? L'examen attentif des situations observées invite ici à une certaine prudence dans l'interprétation. Plutôt que l'accomplissement ultime d'un "bio-pouvoir " que la modestie de ses moyens et de ses réalisations rend improbable, cette politique des corps, qui se met en place dans les villes contemporaines, n'est peut-être au fond que le dernier langage du social.
