Mais d'autre part, bien que destinée tout d'abord à un public restreint, elle touche à partir des années 1850 un nombre grandissant de lecteurs et connaît un âge d'or après 1900. Sans cesser de servir les intérêts des notables et des partis (avec un impact croissant grâce à l'évolution de ses moyens techniques et financiers), elle gagne en variété et finalement s'affirme tout à la fois comme lieu central du débat social et comme facteur premier de diffusion des normes de comportement et mentalités des élites. Au-delà des aspects structurels, c'est autour de l'incidence des rapports entre presse et élites sur les pratiques sociales et politiques que s'articule le présent ouvrage, qui constitue un nouveau jalon dans l'histoire du rôle des médias en Espagne et en Amérique latine.
