Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'African Cry' is liberation theology with African content and original method--in short, a model of African liberation theology. Its translation into the English language is a big contribution to the corpus of literature on African liberation theology available to the English-speaking public. For those who are not already familiar with its French version, it provides a new dimension in African theology. The book is a must for all students of African theology."" --Justin S. Ukpong, Catholic Institute of West Africa, Nigeria 'African Cry' is fundamentally a challenge to all who claim adherence to the Christian faith. It explores the Scriptures, particularly the Gospels, in the light of what passes for Christianity and Mission on the part of European and Caucasian thinking, attitudes, and behavior on the continent of Africa. The book is a magnificent presentation of the problems that the African and African-American have with the behavior and attitudes of Church people from the highest to the lowest levels. This book should be read by as many Christians as possible, and, above all, bishops, particularly European and American."" --Lawrence E. Lucas, author of 'Black Priest/White Church' 'African Cry' shatters the self-censorship of sub-Saharan African theologians on political-economic issues while retaining their deep concern for cultural liberation. It is now impossible to discuss African theology without reference to Ela."" --Marie Giblin, Associate Professor of Theology, Xavier University A vigorous, frank, and uncompromising series of essays by a young, rural-based Cameroonian priest. The stress is on the interrelatedness of inculturation, liberation, and authenticity. The cry is for the right to be different. A superb example of the strongly-felt anguish of committed African priests for a church at once credible and rooted in reality."" --Simon E. Smith, SJ, former Coordinator of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Africa Jean-Marc Ela is a Cameroonian theologian. He is also the author of 'My Faith as an African.'

Book excerpt: Focusing on Kenya and Tanzania, this important study suggests that the solution to third world hunger lies in the interaction of political development and the mobilization of technical resources. The book clarifies as never before the role of political institutions in successful new technology diffusion; shows the similarities between capitalist and socialist states' approaches to technology; and traces the development of assistance projects.

Book excerpt: The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography. This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade--with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world. In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.

The report also explores whether Mali’s neighbor Niger owes its current stability to a more favorable context, shrewd policies, or sheer luck, and whether it might offer a model of resilience for Mali.

Book excerpt: Strategic health planning, the cornerstone of initiatives designed to achieve health improvement goals around the world, requires an understanding of the comparative burden of diseases and injuries, their corresponding risk factors and the likely effects of invervention options. The Global Burden of Disease framework, originally published in 1990, has been widely adopted as the preferred method for health accounting and has become the standard to guide the setting of health research priorities. This publication sets out an updated assessment of the situation, with an analysis of trends observed since 1990 and a chapter on the sensitivity of GBD estimates to various sources of uncertainty in methods and data.

It is a blend of Methodism and African religious culture which arouses the passions of the poorest Brazilian masses. Pentecostal conversion is experienced as a sudden break which radically transforms the life of these sectors of the population. Pentecostalism is an Utopia of equality, love and emotion, which is staged during the worship service. However, it is also characterized by authoritarian features. Pentecostalism is slowly eroding the foundation of Western political categories.

Jan Vansina provides a critique of the history recorded by early missionaries and court historians and provides a bottom-up view, drawing on hundreds of grassroots narratives. He describes the genesis of the Hutu and Tutsi identities, their growing social and political differences, their bitter feuds, revolts, and massacres, and the relevance of this dramatic history to the post-genocide Rwanda of today. 2001 French edition, Katharla Publishers
