Book Synopsis Reading Undercover by : Anne Lynn Birberick
Download or read book Reading Undercover written by Anne Lynn Birberick and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines author/audience relations in the works of the seventeenth-century French poet Jean de La Fontaine. Focusing on the Fables, Les Amours de Psyche et de Cupidon, and the Contes, Anne L. Birberick explores how La Fontaine remains a largely subversive artist, even while he seeks to establish himself within a conventional system of literary patronage. Birberick offers an "anatomy" of readers as she shows how La Fontaine simultaneously appeals to multiple readers whose tastes range from the literal to the ironic, from the orthodox to the heterodox. To negotiate successfully between and among such diverse audiences, the poet employs techniques of concealment and disclosure to foster an anticanonical public.
Download or read book Montmartre written by Nicholas Hewitt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What is Montmartre? Nothing. What must it be? Everything', proclaimed Rodolphe Salis in 1881, when his cabaret Le Chat Noir launched an entertainment boom in the 9th and 18th Arrondissements of Paris which would dominate the worlds of popular and high culture until the First World War. Montmartre's music-halls, circuses, cinemas, accompanied by extra frisson of crime and prostitution, coexisted with burgeoning art movements sprung from the cabarets, which spearheaded the avant-garde in painting, theatre and literature. The story, however, did not end in 1914 and Montmartre retained its role as a magnet for tourists, lured by the Moulin-Rouge and the Sacré-Coeur, and, despite the competition from Montparnasse, as a major centre for artistic creativity in the inter-war years. Crucial to this continuity was, not merely the survival of many of the most important players from the pre-War period, but especially the role of the humorous press and the Montmartre caricaturists and illustrators who congregated in the Restaurant Manière. In this new study, Nicholas Hewitt charts the continuity of Montmartre culture from the Belle Epoque to the Occupation through its many overlapping frontiers and explores its vital ingredients of sexuality, kitsch, bohemia, mass culture and the political and social ambiguities of such a mixture.

Book Synopsis Old-Fashioned Corners of Paris by : Christophe Destournelles
Download or read book Old-Fashioned Corners of Paris written by Christophe Destournelles and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here and there, if you know where to look, it still is possible to catch a glimpse of an almost-vanished Paris: a scene, an object, that somehow has miraculously survived decades, even centuries. Old-fashioned Pleasures of Paris is a small and exquisite catalog of these rarities. Christophe Destournelles has discovered dozens of vintage “moments”: confiseries, barbershops, glove shops; a bougnat (a café that traditionally also sold coal) a bouillion (a restaurant that originally served soup); hookah lounges, movie theatres, harness races, dive bars, and underground jazz clubs. He’s found vintage photo booths, carousels, public scales, the last remaining pissoir. He’s uncovered tiny establishments that quietly carry on with obscure trades: phonograph, radio, and clock repair; hand pressing; shoe polishing. Small details that would be easy to overlook are celebrated in all their everyday glory: the illuminated subway map, the café where the napkins of regulars are kept in a nook, the once-ubiquitous little stand of hardboiled eggs that once could be found on every zinc bar. Each of these spots, however humble, is worth a visit; even the routier, a restaurant that originally served truck drivers, is a visual feast, with its yellow formica counter, red and white checked napkins, and handwritten menu, antique café chairs, and vintage signage. Lovers of Paris will be thrilled to know what streets are particularly beautiful when the snow falls, the history of old telephone exchanges, and where to find old-timers playing pétanque. This is a book for visitors—addresses and phone numbers are listed for each venue—and armchair travelers who will be transported to another place and time by the sumptuous photographs. Literary quotations throughout add another layer of romance to this book that celebrates Paris past and present.

Download or read book Headlines, Deadlines and Lifelines written by George B. Bookman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Headlines, Deadlines and Lifelines is a memoir of a longtime journalist whose career centered on writing about economics, took him from New York to Washington, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and of course, across Europe. As he finished the book he was turning 94 years old. An unforgettable Junior college year in Paris launched his adulthood. Along the way he served nearly four years overseas during World War II, covered the White House as a newsman under FDR's Presidency, was Time Magazine's National Economics Correspondent, and later was a public relations executive and consultant in Wall Street. He also writes about his marriage of 57 years to his wife whose Orthodox Jewish roots were very different from his Reformist ancestry, and about their two children, four grandchildren and now 4 greatgrands. In the closing pages, after his wife of 57 years passed away, he tells about the friendship he resumed with a woman he had not seen in more than 40 years. They have now been together more than six years - and counting.
