Que ne se tient-il pas tranquille ? ont dit ces honorables personnes. Pourquoi ? Je vais le leur apprendre en peu de mots. Pour deux raisons également impérieuses, quoique d’un ordre bien différent. 1° Raison matérielle. — Il faut que je vive et il faut que je fasse vivre les miens. J’avais une solde et un grade qui étaient devenus toute ma fortune. Pour me ré- compenser de trente années bientôt accomplies de services que mes chefs ont vantés, M. Cavaignac, espoir des patriotes, tombeur putatif des dreyfusards, me les a enlevés, sans même daigner ni me voir ni m’entendre. Faut-il donc que mes deux petites filles, elles aussi, soient sacrifiées à la discipline et à la raison d’Etat ? J’estime qu’en fait de martyrs, c’est assez de moi. 2° Raison morale. — On ne s’est pas borné à faire matériellement à moi et aux miens tout le mal possible. En m’arrachant mes épaulettes, on m’a enlevé mon honneur. Et c’est pourquoi je veux parler. Tant que mes chefs m’ont couvert, tant qu’ils ne m’ont pas désavoué, je n’ai rien dit, je suis resté muet et impassible."

Dans un premier temps, seul le capitaine Alfred Dreyfus, stagiaire au 2e bureau de l'état-major, est mis en cause. Accusé d'être l'auteur de la fameuse lettre-bordereau annonçant à l'attaché militaire allemand, von Schwartzkoppen, la livraison de cinq notes, notamment sur « le frein hydraulique du [canon] de 120 [...] », il est condamné à l'unanimité du conseil de guerre, le 22 décembre 1894, à la déportation à vie sur l'île du Diable, en Guyane, et à la dégradation militaire. Le commandant Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy n'entre en scène qu'en août 1896, lorsque est dévoilée l'interception d'un télégramme adressé à ce dernier par von Schwartzkoppen (le fameux "petit bleu"). Des documents manuscrits d'Esterhazy semblent révéler une similitude d'écriture avec celle du bordereau. Les dreyfusards désignent, alors, en lui le véritable coupable, tandis que les antidreyfusards se font de plus en plus partiaux. Traduit, à son tour, devant le conseil de guerre, Esterhazy est, cependant, acquitté le 11 janvier 1898. Dreyfus devra, quant à lui, attendre l'arrêt de la Cour de cassation du 12 juillet 1906 pour voir, de facto, son innocence reconnue.... Avant cela tente, en publiant une contre-enquête, de discréditer l'accusation. Si le personnage d'Esterhaz - l' "oublié" de l'affaire Dreyfus - reste entouré de zones d'ombre, ses écrits le sont tout autant. Il est pourtant l'auteur de deux ouvrages. Pour la première fois, nous reproduisons avec l'un d'eux, un écrit qui fut au centre de l'Affaire Dreyfus.
