Une meilleure compréhension du cycle menstruel de la femme et la synthèse d'hormones stéroïdiennes ont permis la production de méthodes contraceptives hormonales fiables et simple d'utilisation. On retrouve parmi elles des formes très variées telles que : la pilule, l'implant, le stérilet, le patch, l'anneau vaginal et les injections. Après l'éclatement du scandale des pilules de 3ème et 4ème génération, les femmes ont pris conscience du risque des hormones de synthèse sur leur santé mentale et physique. Aujourd'hui de plus en plus de femmes se plaignent d'effets secondaires psychologiques suite à la prise d'une contraception hormonale. De nombreuses femmes témoignent avoir une baisse de libido, d'être plus émotive et moins bien dans leur peau depuis la prise de ce type de contraception. Malgré toutes ces plaintes, très peu de professionnels de santé les prennent en considération. Suite à plusieurs études, il a pourtant été prouvé que les hormones de synthèse avaient une influence négative sur la libido des femmes et qu'elles pouvaient favoriser la dépression chez les femmes de nature fragile. Aujourd'hui, de plus en plus de femmes souhaitent se tourner vers une contraception dénuée d'hormones telles que le dispositif intra-utérin au cuivre, le retour à l'utilisation des préservatifs ou la mise en œuvre des méthodes naturelles.
