Book Synopsis Argument Structure in Flux by : Elly van Gelderen
Download or read book Argument Structure in Flux written by Elly van Gelderen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is centered around five linguistic themes: argument structure and encoding strategies; argument structure and verb classes; unexpressed arguments; split intransitivity; and existential and presentational constructions. The articles also cover a variety of typologically different languages, and they offer new data from under-researched languages on the issues of event and argument structure. In some cases novel perspectives from widely discussed languages on highly debated topics are offered, also addressing more theoretical aspects concerning the predictability and derivation of linking. Several contributions apply current models of the lexicon–syntax interface to synchronic data. Other contributions focus on diachrony and are based on extensive use of corpora. Yet others, although empirically and theoretically grounded, privilege a methodological discussion, presenting analyses based on thorough and long-standing fieldwork.

Book Synopsis This is Not a Novel and Other Novels by : David Markson
Download or read book This is Not a Novel and Other Novels written by David Markson and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Markson was a writer like no other. In his novels, which have been called "hypnotic," "stunning," and "exhilarating" and earned him praise from the likes of Kurt Vonnegut and David Foster Wallace, Ann Beattie and Zadie Smith. Markson created his own personal genre. With crackling wit distilled into incantatory streams of thought on art, life, and death, Markson's work has delighted and astonished readers for decades. Now for the first time, three of Markson's masterpieces are compiled into one page–turning volume: This Is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel. In This Is Not a Novel, readers meet an author, called only "Writer," who is weary unto death of making up stories, and yet is determined to seduce the reader into turning pages and getting somewhere. Vanishing Point introduces us to "Author," who sets out to transform shoeboxes crammed with note cards into a novel. In The Last Novel, we find an elderly author (referred to only as "Novelist") who announces that, since this will be his final effort, he possesses "carte blanche to do anything he damn well pleases." United by their focus on the trials, calamities, absurdities and even tragedies of the creative life, these novels demonstrate David Markson's extraordinary intellectual richness—leaving readers, time after time, with the most indisputably original of reading experiences.

The workshop, organized by Ileana Comorovski and Claire Gardent, was supported by a grant from the Reseau ́ de Sciences Cognitives du Grand Est (‘Cognitive Science Network of the Greater East’), which is gratefully acknowledged. The ?rst e- tor wishes to thank Claire Gardent, Fred Landman, and Georges Rebuschi for encouraging her to pursue the publication of a volume based on papers presented at the workshop. Among those who participated in the workshop was Klaus von Heusinger, who joined Ileana Comorovski in editing this volume. Besides papers that developed out of presentations at the workshop, the volume contains invited contributions. We are grateful to Wayles Browne, Fred Landman, Paul Portner, and Georges Rebuschi for their help with reviewing some of the papers. Our thanks go also to a Springer reviewer for the careful reading of the book manuscript. We wish to thank all the participants in the workshop, not only those whose contributions appear in this volume, for making the workshop an int- active and constructive event. Ileana Comorovski Klaus von Heusinger vii ILEANA COMOROVSKI AND KLAUS VON HEUSINGER INTRODUCTION The notion of ‘existence’, which we take to have solid intuitive grounding, plays a central role in the interpretation of at least three types of linguistic constructions: copular clauses, existential sentences, and (in)de?nite noun phrases.

Book Synopsis Semantic Incorporation and Indefinite Descriptions by : Veerle van Geenhoven
Download or read book Semantic Incorporation and Indefinite Descriptions written by Veerle van Geenhoven and published by Center for the Study of Language and Information Publications. This book was released on 1998-05-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents 'semantic incorporation' as an analysis accounting for many striking similarities between the semantic properties of incorporated nouns in West Greenlandic and bare plurals and split noun phrases in West Germanic language. This analysis uniformly treats these nominal expressions as predicative indefinites. At the outset, van Geenhoven explores the empirical basis for why semantic incorporation is needed. The inability of existing semantic theories of indefinites as well as current structural approaches to noun incorporation to account for the data observed is then explored, and, finally, the work presents semantic incorporation as a subtheory of indefinites. This volume will be of interest to semanticists, lexicalists, syntacticians and linguists.
