Download or read book Rural Racism written by Neil Chakraborti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural issues are currently attracting unprecedented levels of interest, with the debates surrounding the future of 'traditional' rural customs and practice becoming a significant political concern. However, the problem of racism in rural areas has been largely overlooked by academics, practitioners and researchers who have sought almost exclusively to develop an understanding of racism in urban contexts. This book aims to address this oversight by examining notions of ethnic identity, 'otherness' and racist victimisation that have tended to be marginalised from traditional rural discourse.

Book Synopsis Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. Issues in Natural Resource Management by : Cornelius Mbifung Lambi
Download or read book Ecology and Natural Resource Development in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. Issues in Natural Resource Management written by Cornelius Mbifung Lambi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The densely populated Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon remains one of the regions with the greatest land degradation problems in the country. Factors responsible for this include climate change, the hilly nature or topographic layout of the land, and human interference through overgrazing, destructive agricultural practices and the impact of deforestation. This detailed study of resource management and its ecological challenges in the Bamenda Highlands, stresses an important link between falling food output and soil deterioration. While most areas in this predominantly agricultural region enjoy food abundance, the inhabitants of high-density infertile, rugged mountainous areas are forced to resort to double cropping and intensified land exploitation that leave little room for soil regeneration. The population problem in relation to land degradation is infinitely more complicated than the region's sheer ability to produce enough food supply. The authors make a strong case for a delicate balance between human agency and environmental protection in this highly populated and physically challenging region where land is a precious resource and land conflicts are common.

Book Synopsis The Egyptian Peasant by : Henry Habib Ayrout
Download or read book The Egyptian Peasant written by Henry Habib Ayrout and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt has changed enormously in the last half century, and nowhere more so than in the villages of the Nile Valley. Electrification, radio, and television have brought the larger world into the houses. Government schools have increased educational horizons for the children. Opportunities to work in other areas of the Arab world have been extended to peasants as well as to young artisans from the towns. Urbanization has brought many families to live in the belts of substandard housing around the major cities. But the conservative and traditional world of unremitting labor that characterizes the lives of the Egyptian peasants, or fellaheen, also survives, and nowhere has it been better described than in this classic account by Father Henri Habib Ayrout, an Egyptian Jesuit sociologist who dedicated most of his life to creating a network of free schools for rural children at a time when there were very few. First published in French in 1938, the book went through several revisions by the author before being translated and published in English in 1963. The often poetic yet factual and deeply empathetic description Father Ayrout detailed of fellah life is still reliable and still poignant; a measure by which the progress of the countryside must always be gauged.
