Book Synopsis PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN by : David HouŽto
Download or read book PROMOTION DE LA SANTE ET AUTONOMISATION DANS LE CONTEXTE AFRICAIN written by David HouŽto and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Algerian Sketches by : Pierre Bourdieu
Download or read book Algerian Sketches written by Pierre Bourdieu and published by Polity. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. This unique volume brings together the first texts written by Bourdieu in the midst of the Algerian conflict, as well as later writings and interviews in which he returns to the topic of Algeria and the decisive role it played in the development of his work.
Book Synopsis Action and Agency in Dialogue by : François Cooren
Download or read book Action and Agency in Dialogue written by François Cooren and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when people communicate or dialogue with each other? This is the daunting question that this book proposes to address by starting from a controversial hypothesis: What if human interactants were not the only ones to be considered, paraphrasing Austin (1962), as “doing things with words”? That is, what if other “things” could also be granted the status of agents in a dialogical situation? Action and Agency in Dialogue: Passion, incarnation, and ventriloquism proposes to explore this unique hypothesis by mobilizing metaphorically the notion of ventriloquism. According to this ventriloqual perspective, interactions are never purely local, but dislocal, that is, they constantly mobilize figures (collectives, principles, values, emotions, etc.) that incarnate themselves in people’s discussions. This highly original book, which develops the analytical, practical and ethical dimensions of such a theoretical positioning, may be of interest to communication scholars, linguists, sociologists, conversation analysts, management and organizational scholars, as well as philosophers interested in language, action and ethics.

Book Synopsis Tva and the Grass Roots by : Philip Selznick
Download or read book Tva and the Grass Roots written by Philip Selznick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tva and the Grass Roots: A Study in the Sociology of Formal Organization The files and the personnel Of the Tennessee Valley Authority were the primary sources Of research data. The unpublished record has been accorded the same status as personal interview materials, so that sources and quotations cannot always be given specific reference. I have en deavored to protect the anonymity of those in and out of the Authority who have helped me to an understanding of the tva's methods and pro gram. At the same time, informants on questions Of detail have been restricted to those within tva who have worked on the programs dis cussed. A check with the written record was made wherever possible. Interviews with Officials in Washington and in the Tennessee Valley states were also of assistance. It is hoped that a contribution has been made here toward the evolu tion of a theory of organization. In that sense, the study is not practical or programmatic. It is believed, however, that a practical relevance will be discerned by those involved in action who must take into account such general relations within and among organizations as are studied here. It must also be emphasized that what is presented here is only one aspect Of the total tva picture. For more general presentations of the Author ity's program, the reader is referred to such volumes as David E. Lilien thal's tva: Democracy on the March, C. Herman Pritchett's The Tennessee Valley Authority: A Study in Public Administration, and Herman Finer's tva: Lessons for International Application. Book Synopsis Micromotives and Macrobehavior by : Thomas C. Schelling
Download or read book Micromotives and Macrobehavior written by Thomas C. Schelling and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Freakonomics and The Tipping Point there was this classic by the 2005 Nobel Laureate in Economics. "Schelling here offers an early analysis of 'tipping' in social situations involving a large number of individuals." —official citation for the 2005 Nobel Prize Micromotives and Macrobehavior was originally published over twenty-five years ago, yet the stories it tells feel just as fresh today. And the subject of these stories—how small and seemingly meaningless decisions and actions by individuals often lead to significant unintended consequences for a large group—is more important than ever. In one famous example, Thomas C. Schelling shows that a slight-but-not-malicious preference to have neighbors of the same race eventually leads to completely segregated populations. The updated edition of this landmark book contains a new preface and the author's Nobel Prize acceptance speech.
