His family are very poor and so Pedro wishes for riches and great wealth which are granted. Many years later, Zelmut, Chief and Highness of Planet Mars, discovers the existence of the wishing book and wants it for himself so that he can become the ruler of the whole universe. He sends a Martian warrior to find the book and bring it back to Mars, but the warrior keeps the book and uses the book for his own selfish ends and never returns to Mars. Many years later, little John Carter aged 9, finds this book hidden under a floorboard in his bedroom. He tells his twin sister Penny and close friend Jimmy and together they have many small adventures and play pranks with the book. Eventually, they wish to go to Planet Mars and they tell their science teacher about this. They trust him and he agrees to go on the trip with them. This is where the action picks up. The children face betrayal and terror as they are faced with Martian warriors and flying creatures called Termans who are intent on getting the book off them. To add to their fear, Zelmut releases his prized weapon - the Blattidae. Eventually the children lose the Wishing Book and all hope of returning to Planet Earth is dashed. Zelmut seems intent on terminating them. Will he succeed? This is an edge of the seat book that will keep the reader gripped right until the end. With the many twists, it is impossible to know who they can trust. Book reviews online: PublishedBestsellers website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persecution of Old World German Protestants and Anabaptists in the seventeenth century--following debilitating wars, the Reformation, and the Inquisition-- brought about significant immigration to America. Many of the immigrants, and their progeny, settled in the Appalachian frontier. Here they established a particularly old set of religious beliefs and traditions based on a strong sense of folk spirituality. They practiced astrology, numerology, and other aspects of esoteric thinking and left a legacy that may still be found in Appalachian folklore today. Based in part on the author's extensive collection of oral histories from the remote highlands of West Virginia, Signs, Cures, and Witchery; German Appalachian Folklore describes these various occult practices, symbols, and beliefs; how they evolved within New World religious contexts; how they arrived on the Appalachian frontier; and the prospects of those beliefs continuing in the contemporary world. By concentrating on these inheritances, Gerald C. Milnes draws a larger picture of the German influence on Appalachia. Much has been written about the Anglo-Celtic, Scots-Irish, and English folkways of the Appalachian people, but few studies have addressed their German cultural attributes and sensibilities. Signs, Cures, and Witchery sheds startling light on folk influences from Germany, making it a volume of tremendous value to Appalachian scholars, folklorists, and readers with an interest in Appalachian folklife and German American studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trees which line many of the streets in our towns and cities can often be regarded as part of a heritage landscape. Despite the difficult conditions of an urban environment, these trees may live for 100 years or more and represent Ôliving historyÕ in the midst of our modern streetscapes. This is the first book on the history of BritainÕs street trees and it gives a highly readable, authoritative and often amusing account of their story, from the tree-lined promenades of the seventeenth century to the majestic boulevards that grace some of our modern city centers. The impact of the Victorian street tree movement is examined, not only in the major cities but also in the rapidly developing suburbs that continued to expand through the twentieth century. There are fascinating descriptions of how street trees have helped to improve urban conditions in spa towns and seaside resorts and also in visionary initiatives such as the model villages, garden cities, garden suburbs and new towns. While much of the book focuses on the social and cultural history of our street trees, the last three chapters look at the practicalities of how these trees have been engineered into concrete landscapes. This includes the many threats to street trees over the years, such as pollution, conflict with urban infrastructure, pests and diseases and what is probably the greatest threat in recent times Ð the dramatic growth in car ownership. Street Trees in Britain will have particular appeal to those interested in heritage landscapes, urban history and the natural and built environment. Some of its themes were introduced in the authorÕs previous work, the widely acclaimed Trees in Towns and Cities: A History of British Urban Arboriculture.
