This book was released on 1993 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So foundational is this invention to modern aesthetics, Koerner argues, that interpreting it takes us to the limits of traditional art-historical method. Self-portraiture becomes legible less through a history leading up to it, or through a sum of contexts that occasion it, than through its historical sight-line to the present. After a thorough examination of Durer's startlingly new self-portraits, the author turns to the work of Baldung, Durer's most gifted pupil, and demonstrates how the apprentice willfully disfigured Durer's vision. Baldung replaced the master's self-portraits with some of the most obscene and bizarre pictures in the history of art. In images of nude witches, animated cadavers, and copulating horses, Baldung portrays the debased self of the viewer as the true subject of art. The Moment of Self-Portraiture thus unfolds as passages from teacher to student, artist to viewer, reception, all within a culture that at once deified and abhorred originality.

Book excerpt: Pope Leo I’s theological and political influence in his own time (440-461) and beyond far outweighs the amount of attention he has received in recent scholarship. That influence extended well beyond Rome to the Christian East through his contribution to preparations for the Council of Chalcedon and its outcome. For this he was alternately praised and vilified by the opposing parties at the Council. Leo made his views known through letters, and a vast number of homilies. While so many of these survive, Leo and his works have not been the subject of a major English-language socio-historical study in over fifty years. In this brief introduction to the life and works of this important leader of the early church, we gain a more accurate picture of the circumstances and pressures which were brought to bear on his pontificate. A brief introduction surveys the scanty sources which document Leo’s early life, and sets his pontificate in its historical context, as the Western Roman Empire went into serious decline, and Rome lost its former status as the western capital. Annotated translations of various excerpts of Leo’s letters and homilies are organised around four themes dealing with specific aspects of Leo’s activity as bishop of Rome: Leo as spiritual adviser on the life of the faithful Leo as opponent of heresy the bishop of Rome as civic and ecclesiastical administrator Leo and the primacy of Rome. Taking each of these key elements of Leo’s pontifical activities into account, we gain a more balanced picture of the context and contribution of his best-known writings on Christology. This volume offers an affordable introduction to the subject for both teachers and students of ancient and medieval Christianity.

Book excerpt: This textbook describes in detail the fundamental equations that govern the fate and transport of contaminants in the environment, and covers the application of these equations to engineering design and environmental impact analysis relating to contaminant discharges into rivers, lakes, wetlands, groundwater, and oceans. The third edition provides numerous end-of-chapter problems and an expanded solutions manual. Also introduced in this edition are PowerPoints slides for all chapters so that instructors have a ready-made course. Key distinguishing features of this book include: detailed coverage of the science behind water-quality regulations, state-of-the-art methods for calculating total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for the remediation of impaired waters, modeling and control of nutrient levels in lakes and reservoirs, design of constructed treatment wetlands, design of groundwater remediation systems, design of ocean outfalls, control of oil spills in the ocean, and the design of systems to control the quality of surface runoff from watersheds into their receiving waters. In addition, the entire book is updated to provide the latest advances in the field of water-quality control. For example, concepts such as mixing zones are expanded to include physical nature and regulatory importance of mixing zones, practical aspects of outfall and diffuser design are also included, specific details of water-quality modeling are updated to reflect the latest developments on this topic, and new findings relating to priority and emerging pollutants are added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are the paleolithic Venus of Willendorf, Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes, and Marcel Duchamp's ready-made urinal all considered works of art? Why, strictly speaking, is a Cindy Sherman photograph more "art-like" than a Da Vinci portrait? How did the painters and sculptors of the Renaissance see their creations? And who decides what art is today? In the tradition of Marshall McLuhan and John Berger, this learned and deliciously subversive book gives us a new way of seeing our artistic heritage. Believing Is Seeing is a work of multicultural scope and glittering intelligence that bridges the gulf between classical Japanese painting and the films of Spike Lee, between high theory and pop culture. Probing beyond the rhetorical surface of standard art histories and drawing on a panoramic array of illustrative material, Mary Anne Staniszewski throws a fresh light on individual works and the often mystifying criteria by which they are valued.
