Book excerpt: In the great tradition of the German Festschrift, this book brings together articles by Professor Bernstein's colleagues, friends and students to honor him on his 70th birthday. Ranging in subject from the trouv e song through esoteric aspects of Renaissance studies and authenticity in 18th-century musical sources to a lively and irreverent attack on performance practices today, the twenty essays by many of America's most distinguished scholars reflect the breadth and variety of Martin Bernstein's far-reaching interests and demonstrates the vitality and relevance of what is best in musicology today.
Book Synopsis Neurosciences in Music Pedagogy by : Francis Rauscher
Download or read book Neurosciences in Music Pedagogy written by Francis Rauscher and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is how to transmit topical knowledge and recent findings in neurosciences to the needs of music educators. The authors offer a comprehensive view of neuromusical research and its potential applications to music learning. They take into consideration that (1) knowledge as such is not transferable; we cannot force children to learn or push synapses to grow. We can only provide a stimulating environment and environmental conditions that enhance and support learning, and (2) knowledge acquisition is governed by factors that are not fully under conscious control and can hardly be influenced externally. Nevertheless, children learn and are extremely curious and eager to learn. Their cortex is the organ where new experiences and knowledge are processed by interconnected neurons (mental representations) which become activated when a similar sensorial input is perceived. Since musicians have become a favoured model of brain plasticity in neurosciences, pedagogical expectations arose that education could benefit from music, and that neurosciences could underpin this assumption with solid and robust research data.
Book Synopsis Tango Lessons by : Marilyn G. Miller
Download or read book Tango Lessons written by Marilyn G. Miller and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its earliest manifestations on the street corners of nineteenth-century Buenos Aires to its ascendancy as a global cultural form, tango has continually exceeded the confines of the dance floor or the music hall. In Tango Lessons, scholars from Latin America and the United States explore tango's enduring vitality. The interdisciplinary group of contributors—including specialists in dance, music, anthropology, linguistics, literature, film, and fine art—take up a broad range of topics. Among these are the productive tensions between tradition and experimentation in tango nuevo, representations of tango in film and contemporary art, and the role of tango in the imagination of Jorge Luis Borges. Taken together, the essays show that tango provides a kaleidoscopic perspective on Argentina's social, cultural, and intellectual history from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Contributors. Esteban Buch, Oscar Conde, Antonio Gómez, Morgan James Luker, Carolyn Merritt, Marilyn G. Miller, Fernando Rosenberg, Alejandro Susti

Book Synopsis Music, Language, and the Brain by : Aniruddh D. Patel
Download or read book Music, Language, and the Brain written by Aniruddh D. Patel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first comprehensive study of the relationship between music and language from the standpoint of cognitive neuroscience, Aniruddh D. Patel challenges the widespread belief that music and language are processed independently. Since Plato's time, the relationship between music and language has attracted interest and debate from a wide range of thinkers. Recently, scientific research on this topic has been growing rapidly, as scholars from diverse disciplines, including linguistics, cognitive science, music cognition, and neuroscience are drawn to the music-language interface as one way to explore the extent to which different mental abilities are processed by separate brain mechanisms. Accordingly, the relevant data and theories have been spread across a range of disciplines. This volume provides the first synthesis, arguing that music and language share deep and critical connections, and that comparative research provides a powerful way to study the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying these uniquely human abilities. Winner of the 2008 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award.

This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic conception of human transcendental consciousness assumes its self-supporting existential status within the horizon of life-world, nature and earth. Yet this assumed absoluteness does not entail the nature of its powers, neither their constitutive force. This latter call for an existential source reaching beyond the generative life-world network. Transcendental consciousness, having lost its absolute status (its point of reference) it is the role of the logos to lay down the harmonious positioning in the cosmic sphere of the all, establishing an original foundation of phenomenology in the primogenital ontopoiesis of life.
