Book Synopsis Children’s Rights and the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility by : Don Cipriani
Download or read book Children’s Rights and the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility written by Don Cipriani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children of almost any age can break the law, but at what age should children first face the possibility of criminal responsibility for their alleged crimes? This work is the first global analysis of national minimum ages of criminal responsibility (MACRs), the international legal obligations that surround them, and the principal considerations for establishing and implementing respective age limits. Taking an international children's rights approach, with a rich theoretical framework and the vitality of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this work maintains a critical perspective, such as in challenging the assumptions of many children's rights scholars and advocates. Compiling the age limits and statutory sources for all countries, this book explains the broad historical origins behind most of them, identifying the recurring practical challenges that affect every country and providing the first comprehensive evidence that a general principle of international law requires all nations, regardless of their treaty ratifications, to establish respective minimum age limits.

Download or read book Heirlooms' Tale written by Benedicte Grima and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six heirlooms – a portrait, a table, a parure, a whiskey label, a set of books, and a building -- tell the stories of six branches of a family whose possessions lived through three centuries and eventually came together under one roof before dispersing again. These items have survived through generations and witnessed their owners as they evolved through history. In addition to the lives of their individual owners, the stories also cover certain historical and cultural figures, both American and French: slave traders and plantation owners, merchants and financiers of New York, whiskey distillers, Creoles of Louisiana, wreckers off the Florida Keys, drafters on Napoleon’s mission to Egypt, French lawyers and politicians, World War II fighters, and CIA spies. The book pays homage to the heirlooms’ past owners; it also examines the culture that surrounds families of wealth and status and the fierce struggle to retain these advantages through marriage ties. The stories pay homage to the heirlooms’ past owners.

Book Synopsis Fathers, Families, and the State in France, 1914–1945 by : Kristen Stromberg Childers
Download or read book Fathers, Families, and the State in France, 1914–1945 written by Kristen Stromberg Childers and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state's policy with regard to fathers and fatherhood had a great impact on concepts of citizenship and gender in France in the era of the two World Wars. Drawing on new material that has only recently become available from the archives of the Vichy regime, Kristen Stromberg Childers analyzes the ways fathers were promoted as saviors of the nation after France's humiliating defeat by the Germans in June 1940. Childers argues that concern for the family and for the status of fathers in modern France was not merely a response to falling birthrates and German aggression, but was fundamental to the very notion of citizenship and political participation. The debate on men as gendered beings, Childers demonstrates, is central to the political, social, and cultural history of France in the modern age. The father figure became a focus as participants from all classes and across the political spectrum debated what was wrong with the French family and what policies were needed to remedy the problem. Childers examines how these policies were implemented, what they reveal about the development of the welfare state in France, and how they help explain the importance of Vichy in twentieth-century French history. Twenty-eight illustrations, including fifteen photographs, many never previously published, complement her argument.

Book Synopsis The Incident at Antioch/LÍIncident dÍAntioche by : Alain Badiou
Download or read book The Incident at Antioch/LÍIncident dÍAntioche written by Alain Badiou and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Incident at Antioch is a key play marking Alain Badiou's transition from classical Marxism to a "politics of subtraction" far removed from party and state. Written with striking eloquence and extraordinary poetic richness, and shifting from highly serious emotional and intellectual drama to surreal comic interlude, the work features statesmen, workers, and revolutionaries struggling to reconcile the nature and practice of politics. This bilingual edition presents L'Incident d'Antioche in its original French and, on facing pages, an expertly executed English translation. Badiou adds a special preface, and an introduction by the scholar Kenneth Reinhard connects the play to Paul Claudel's The City, Saint Paul and the early history of the Church, and the innovative mathematical thinking of Paul Cohen. The translation includes Susan Spitzer's extensive notes clarifying allusions and quotations and hinting at Badiou's intentions. An interview with Badiou encompasses the play's settings, themes, and events, as well as his ongoing literary and conceptual experimentation on stage and off.
