Doret est né à Pétion-Ville (Haïti) en 1938, ingénieur-architecte de profession, il a voué un intérêt spécial à la littérature française et spécifi quement à la littérature francophone à ce tournant de son émergence universelle. Il a soutenu sa thèse de docteur ès lettres (Ph.D.) à la George Washington University, Etats-Unis en 1982. Aliénation dans la poésie d'Haïti du XXe siècle fut vite suivie de Situation Poésie 83, recueil de poèmes, paru chez les Editions Saint-Germain-des-Prés de Paris en 1984 et d'un ouvrage de critique poétique intitulé : Poétesses genevoises francophones (1970-1980) en 1985. Auteur de plusieurs anthologies thématiques de poésie haïtienne et d'une Anthologie poétique de la Suisse romande, il a aussi publié un Panorama de la poésie francophone et plusieurs centaines d'articles et d'essais sur la poésie francophone qui font de lui un spécialiste en poésie francophone. Ses deux lexiques, créole-français et français-créole, parus en 1990, font l'objet ici d'une publication en un volume unique qui a pour ambition non seulement de faire état de la graphie préconisée par l'Éducation nationale, de signaler une possible amélioration de la graphie traditionnelle précédente, de donner les équivalents dans les deux langues, mais aussi de faciliter à l'étudiant le passage du créole au français, langue de contact international.
