Adams, famous for the unique depth and breadth of his research, has gathered here his most important essays looking at the Elizabethan Court, and the adventures and legacy of the Earl.Together with his edition of Leicester's accounts and his reconstruction of Leicester's papers, Adams has published much upon on Leicester's influence and activities. His work has reshaped our knowledge of Elizabeth and her Court, Parliament, and such subjects of recent debate as the power of the nobility and the noble affinity, the politics of faction and the role of patronage. Sixteen essays are found in this collection, organized into three groups: the Court, Leicester and his affinity, and Leicester and the regions. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive survey of aristocratic art collecting and patronage in Elizabethan England, as seen through the activities of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (ca. 1532-1588). One of the most fascinating and controversial people of his day, Leicester was also the most important patron of painters at the Elizabethan court. He amassed a substantial art collection, including commissioned works by Nicholas Hilliard, Paolo Veronese, and Federico Zuccaro; helped foster the birth of an English vernacular discourse on the visual arts; and was an early exponent, in England, of the Italian Renaissance view of the painter as the practitioner of a liberal art and, thus, fit company for the educated and well-born. Although Leicester’s picture collection and personal papers were widely dispersed after his death, this volume’s pioneering research reconstructs his lost world and, with it, a turning point in the history of British art. Some of the paintings featured here are little-known images from private collections, never before reproduced in color.

It was an honor that she would enjoy for two decades. However, on the morning of September 21st, 1578, Lettice made a fateful decision. When the Queen learned of it, the consequences were swift. Lettice had dared to marry without the Queen’s consent. But worse, her new husband was Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, the Queen’s favorite and one-time suitor.Though she would not marry him herself, Elizabeth was fiercely jealous of any woman who showed an interest in Leicester. Knowing that she would likely earn the Queen’s enmity, Lettice married Leicester in secret, leading to her permanent banishment from court. Elizabeth never forgave the new Countess for what she perceived to be a devastating betrayal, and Lettice permanently forfeited her favor. She had become not just Queen Elizabeth’s adversary. She was her rival. But the Countess’ story does not end there. Surviving the death of two husbands and navigating the courts of three very different monarchs: Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Charles I, Lettice’s story offers an extraordinary and intimate perspective on the world she lived in.

Book excerpt: Hated by his country. Loved by England's queen. The Queen's Favourite: Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (The Tudor Court, Book 1) is an unforgettable portrait of a man reviled by history but who was so much more than a courtier taking advantage of a too indulgent queen. Robert Dudley is a child of the Tudor Court and he knows first-hand how dangerous it can be: his ruthless, tax-collecting grandfather was executed by Henry VIII and his father executed by Queen Mary I for his part in the Lady Jane Grey affair. So with a family name tainted by treason, Robert knows he must use all his talents to rise. One of his talents is making himself indispensable to Queen Elizabeth, who soon finds she cannot live without him by her side. But to many in England, and indeed, within the court, Robert is nothing but a rogue, a villain, a gypsy, always looking to see what he can pick up. And he's going to have a hard time convincing his enemies that there's more to him than just a gold-digger. Robert believes he can become King - all he needs to do is persuade Elizabeth Tudor to marry him. But with Elizabeth determined to be a virgin queen, Robert discovers this is no easy task. He must be prepared to make great sacrifices to win his prize.

His influence on her, from the beginning of her reign until his death in 1588, was constant and incalculable ¿ greater than that of anyone else save Burleigh ¿ though he was generally unpopular among his fellow courtiers, detested by the populace as a whole, and lampooned by the writers of the day. Leicester¿s complex character, his lavish entertaining, his encouragement of the arts, his day-by-day activities ¿ as courtier, Master of the Queen¿s Horse, Chancellor of Oxford, leader of the English forces in the war of the Netherlands against Spain ¿ are all brought vividly to life. First published in 1961.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest loves of all time-between Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley-comes to life in this vivid novel. They were playmates as children, impetuous lovers as adults-and for thirty years were the center of each others' lives. Astute to the dangers of choosing any one man, the Virgin Queen could never give her "Sweet Robin" what he wanted most-marriage- yet she insisted he stay close by her side. Possessive and jealous, their love survived quarrels, his two disastrous marriages to other women, her constant flirtations, and political machinations with foreign princes. His Last Letter tells the story of this great love... and especially of the last three years Elizabeth and Dudley spent together, the most dangerous of her rule, when their passion was tempered by a bittersweet recognition of all that they shared-and all that would remain unfulfilled.

Book excerpt: View our feature on Sarah Gristwood’s Elizabeth & Leicester.Though the story has been told on film—and whispered in historic gossip—this is the first book in almost fifty years to solely explore the great queen’s attachment to her beloved Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. Fueled by scandal and intrigue, their relationship set the explosive connection between public and private life in sixteenth-century England in bold relief. Why did they never marry? How much of what seemed a passionate obsession was actually political convenience? Elizabeth and Leicester reignites this 400- year-old love story in a book for anyone interested in Elizabethan literature.

Book excerpt: Robert Dudley, the first Earl of Leicester, was a leading figure at the court of Elizabeth I, and this book presents a scholarly edition of both his two surviving household accounts (from 1558 to 1581), and the fragments of his disbursement books (from 1584 to 1586). The work also includes an appendix of those lists of household servants that have survived. This is the only collection of such information available for such a prominent member of the Elizabethan court, and as such provides numerous valuable insights into the personal finances of members of the Elizabethan aristocracy. It will thus be essential reading for any serious scholar of the high politics of the Elizabethan period.

Book excerpt: The Wars of the Roses - colourful, full of fury and passion. In our histories - and Shakespeare's play - Richard the Third dies on Bosworth Field, hacked to death in a just ending. But another Richard exists, who is still loved in the North of England and remembered as their best ruler. But how can these two opposites have co-existed in the same world? Or did they? Through the eyes of Lady Katherine we see Richard grow up in a strange world where both Mother Goddess and patriarchal Christian God exist, and the struggle between the two religions is mirrored in that between York and Lancaster. From their teenage years, Freda Warrington traces Richard and Katherine's story during one of the most fascinating times in England's history.
