Download or read book #futuregen written by Jane Davidson and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What Wales is doing today, the world will do tomorrow.”—Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary General The story of how one small nation responded to global climate issues by radically rethinking public policy for future generations In #futuregen, Jane Davidson explains how, as Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing in Wales, she proposed the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015—the first piece of legislation on Earth to place regenerative and sustainable practice at the heart of government. Unparalleled in its scope and vision, the Act connects environmental and social health and looks to solve complex issues such as poverty, education and unemployment. Davidson reveals how and why such groundbreaking legislation was forged in Wales—once reliant on its coal, iron and steel industries—and explores how the shift from economic growth to sustainable growth is creating new opportunities for communities and governments all over the world. #futuregen is the inspiring story of a small, pioneering nation discovering prosperity through its vast natural beauty, renewable energy resources and resilient communities. It’s a living, breathing prototype for local and global leaders as proof of what is possible in the fight for a sustainable future.

Book Synopsis Legislating for Wales by : Thomas Glyn Watkin
Download or read book Legislating for Wales written by Thomas Glyn Watkin and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the start of the twenty-first century, laws were made for Wales by the Parliament at Westminster. Devolution, and the creation of the National Assembly, has given Wales another legislature that does not replace the UK Parliament but shares in its law-making activity regarding certain subjects. This book considers how legislation is made for Wales; its primary focus is law-making by the National Assembly and the Welsh Government, but the role of Westminster and Whitehall is also observed. The purpose of this volume is to raise a critical awareness of what is involved in sound law-making – it is intended not only for those who prepare and make legislation within the institutions of government, but equally also for the citizens whose lives are affected by that legislation, and who have an interest in the quality of the laws that govern them and the society in which they live. This is the first such work to consider these issues from a Welsh perspective.
Book Synopsis Welsh Planning Law and Practice by : Graham Walters
Download or read book Welsh Planning Law and Practice written by Graham Walters and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welsh Planning Law and Practice provides a comprehensive guide to the sources and structure of Welsh planning law and a route through its complexity. This is not a comparative study, but rather deals with legislation and policy affecting land in Wales, placing them in the context of shared principles and concepts and the case law common to England and Wales. More than an academic exercise, planning is a practical matter affecting important aspects of daily life, and the desirability of public engagement in the planning process is well settled. This book contributes to the promotion of recognition of the body of Welsh planning law, to aid accessibility for all who practise in or who are (or want to be) involved in shaping development in Wales.
Book Synopsis Environmental Law and Policy in Wales by : Patrick Bishop
Download or read book Environmental Law and Policy in Wales written by Patrick Bishop and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-03-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collective academic response from environmental law scholars sharing an interest in Welsh perspectives on today’s local and global environmental challenges. The editors brought colleagues together at a ground-breaking colloquium at Swansea University in April 2011, seeking to foster new legal approaches at a time that sees a new dynamic toward a devolved Wales, including in the environmental policy field. This afforded the opportunity to reflect on pressing environmental quandaries, and to bring together contributors’ conceptual insights and technical legal know-how in identifying ideas for potential responses and solutions. These environmental problems with palpably global implications, such as climate change, thus require engagement at regional and local levels to look to the future.

Book Synopsis Legislation at Westminster by : Meg Russell
Download or read book Legislation at Westminster written by Meg Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Westminster parliament is a highly visible political institution, and one of its core functions is approving new laws. Yet Britain's legislative process is often seen as executive-dominated, and parliament as relatively weak. As this book shows, such impressions can be misleading. Drawing on the largest study of its kind for more than forty years, Meg Russell and Daniel Gover cast new light on the political dynamics that shape the legislative process. They provide a fascinating account of the passage of twelve government bills - collectively attracting more than 4000 proposed amendments - through both the House of Commons and House of Lords. These include highly contested changes such as Labour's identity cards scheme and the coalition's welfare reforms, alongside other relatively uncontroversial measures. As well as studying the parliamentary record and amendments, the study draws from more than 100 interviews with legislative insiders. Following introductory chapters about the Westminster legislative process, the book focuses on the contribution of distinct parliamentary 'actors', including the government, opposition, backbenchers, select committees, and pressure groups. It considers their behaviour in the legislative process, what they seek to achieve, and crucially how they influence policy decisions. The final chapter reflects on Westminster's influence overall, showing this to be far greater than commonly assumed. Parliamentary influence is asserted in various different ways - ranging from visible amendments to more subtle means of changing government's behaviour. The book's findings make an important contribution to understanding both British politics and the dynamics of legislative bodies more broadly. Its readability and relevance will appeal to both specialists and general readers with interests in politics and law, in the UK and beyond.

This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master and servant acts, the cornerstone of English employment law for more than four hundred years, gave largely unsupervised, inferior magistrates wide discretion over employment relations, including the power to whip, fine, and imprison men, women, and children for breach of private contracts with their employers. The English model was adopted, modified, and reinvented in more than a thousand colonial statutes and ordinances regulating the recruitment, retention, and discipline of workers in shops, mines, and factories; on farms, in forests, and on plantations; and at sea. This collection presents the first integrated comparative account of employment law, its enforcement, and its importance throughout the British Empire. Sweeping in its geographic and temporal scope, this volume tests the relationship between enacted law and enforced law in varied settings, with different social and racial structures, different economies, and different constitutional relationships to Britain. Investigations of the enforcement of master and servant law in England, the British Caribbean, India, Africa, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, and colonial America shed new light on the nature of law and legal institutions, the role of inferior courts in compelling performance, and the definition of "free labor" within a multiracial empire. Download or read book OSCOLA written by Donal Nolan and published by Hart Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two golden rules for the citation of legal authorities. One is consistency. The other is consideration for the reader. Legal writing is more persuasive when the author refers to legal materials in a clear, consistent and familiar way. The Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) helps authors to achieve consistency in citing cases, legislation and secondary sources. And it helps authors to make life easier for their readers. OSCOLA is widely used by law schools and legal publishers both in the United Kingdom and abroad. This latest revision of OSCOLA (the fourth edition) is the first to be published in hard copy, and provides more detailed coverage of both primary and secondary legal sources. The editors are Donal Nolan and Sandra Meredith. Shortlisted for the Halsbury Legal Awards 2013 in the Award for Academic Contribution category.
