Book excerpt: A storyteller examines Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and the lore that inspired it, as well as other local legends of the Hudson Valley. The story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman is one of America's best-known fables, but what other stories does the Hudson Valley hold? Imps cause mischief on the Hudson River, a white lady haunts Raven Rock, Major Andre’s ghost seeks redemption and real headless Hessians search for their severed skulls. These mysterious and spooky tales from the region’s past inspired Irving and continue to captivate the imagination to this day. “Kruk has been enchanting audiences with his dramatic, enticing storytelling ability for 20 years.” —Suzanne Rothberg, Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Patch

These villages, bordering the majestic Hudson River, are rich in the charm and mystery of their shared historic past. From the era of Weckquaesgeek to the close of World War II, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow depicts scenes of area residents' mothers, fathers, grandparents, and ancestors at work, home, school, and play. Treasured images of Revolutionary War sites, the growing villages, and stately mansions and castles bring the past of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to life. Also vividly brought to life is the location Washington Irving made famous with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Double-check! They HAVE to be if you are going to read this book, which is undoubtedly the scariest rendition of one of the greatest ghost stories ever told: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. While you may have heard of Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, and the Headless Horseman, you've never SEEN them quite like this. So, take a deep breath and take a long look. And you may want to bring a flashlight to bed with you tonight.... WHY IS THIS EDITION SPECIAL? Because includes: THE AUTHOR'S ACCOUNT OF HIMSELF Where Irving introduces himself to the reader by saying that he has been fond of traveling and observing people and places since he was a child. As a boy he would explore all the different regions of his city and its surrounding country, learning all of the histories and legends of these places. As he grew older he continued to travel and explore, and he explains that had he just been interested in scenery and nature, he never would have felt the need to leave America, which is extremely rich in natural beauty. Irving finds greater charm, however, in the long histories of art, literature, and people to be found in Europe. and THE SPECTRE BRIDEGROOM A short story in where Irving evokes the colorful landscapes of his Hudson Valley hometown, and conjures characters and creatures from its historical past for a unique kind of weird tale that speaks directly to America's experience as a fledgling nation fashioning its own folk heritage

Book excerpt: Sleepy Hollow is known for being home to ghosts and spirits, the most famous of which is the terrifying Headless Horseman, a spectre searching for the head he lost to a stray cannonball during the American Revolutionary War. Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolmaster, is more concerned with earning the hand of Katrina Van Tassel than worrying about ghosts, but the night that he expects to earn Katrina’s affections holds something quite different in store for him. “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is one of the first examples of American fiction writing and has since become a celebrated folk tale. It has been adapted many times for stage, theatre, television and film, including the 1999 Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, and the hit television show, Sleepy Hollow, starring Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, and Orlando Jones. HarperCollins brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. But whether fact, superstition, or legend, the mystery of the region is detailed here through an amazing range of sites from enigmatic stone structures and ancient petroglyphs, to battlefields, haunted mountaintops, and popular waterfalls. Tales of ghosts and strange creatures, a hint of the supernatural, and attention-grabbing folklore and real-life experiences abound, including a fair share of lost treasure--from the infamous pirate Captain Kidd and outlaw Claudius Smith, to the more modern gangster, Dutch Schultz. Each of the 20 chapters includes mystifying stories, beautiful and expansive photography, and a "Getting There" section that provides coordinates and detailed directions to the location. So whether you're in the mood for an armchair vacation, or real visits to mysterious places, the Hudson Valley region is the place to be.

Book excerpt: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving Ichabod Crane is a newcomer to the Hudson Valley. Unlike many generations of Dutch settlers before him, he had neither the strength nor the means to become a farmer and landowner. His only marketing skill was teaching, and in the small village of Sleepy Hollow, this paid off very little. His school was dilapidated, one large room built of timber. Its broken windows are fixed with the leaves of an old copybook, Ichabod's room is the room that a nearby Dutch farmer who raised him for a week each time was happy to provide it, so Ichabod went round. Of the neighborhood and his small salary, combined with a constantly changing address, allows him to keep all his personal belongings in a cotton handkerchief. Since he came from Connecticut, a state whose main product is the teacher of the country, Ichabod felt both above the Dutch valley merchandise and frustrated by his perennial state of poverty. He compensated the past by regularly forcing his petty charges to become more stubborn and the latter by working light on a nearby farm. He added income by serving as a local singer, teaching the farm kids to sing psalms. Never miss out on a chance to have curry with a local mother, Ichabod is always raising the youngest child. In short, his only goal is self-progression, and even if he "waits" in Sleepy Hollow, he will certainly remain there if his chances improve. Ichabod could not rely on his appearance or strength to develop him, so he cultivated a group of peasant daughters, especially from wealthier families, and impressed them with his superior curiosity and taste. He has "read many books" among them, a story about Cotton Mather's spell in New England. He believed even the strangest of these tales. In fact, he was so scared of himself reading them, and he was startled when he heard birds or saw fireflies. In other words, he is completely naive and direct. The local story of Galloping Hessian riding headless through Sleepy Hollow Forest especially woke him up. The snow-covered bush in the half-light was enough to convince Ichabod that he had seen a headless horseman. One of Ichabod's music students is Katrina Van Tassel, the eighteen-year-old daughter of a prosperous Dutch farmer. She "plump like a quail. Ripe and melting and blushing like your father's peach. "She, as her father's only daughter, has "Many expectations" even though she is a womanizer. But her legacy expectations made her look like Ichabod was a desirable bride, and he decided to win her over. Ichabod's mouth water When he recalled the fruit of the ancient land of Baltus Van Tassel, he dreamed of fertile pastures, fertile wheat fields, rye, buckwheat, fruit and Indian corn, which would be his if. He can win Katrina's hand. Once married to Katrina, he can invest in a large piece of land. He can imagine Katrina with his whole family, setting off with him in promising new lands in Kentucky or Tennessee. However, the home's opulent comforts of Van Tassel made him know that Katrina had to be.
