Book Synopsis The Legendary Jackrabbit Johannsen by : Alice E. Johannsen
Download or read book The Legendary Jackrabbit Johannsen written by Alice E. Johannsen and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the remarkable Norwegian-Canadian who pioneered cross-country skiing in North America. A warm and personal portrait written by his daughter, it also places Johannsen's life in the context of the milieux in which he lived, and adds an element of objectivity and clarity to the Jackrabbit legend. Jackrabbit's life spanned more than eleven decades. Born in Norway in 1875, he spent his early years there before going to university in Berlin. As a young engineer he emigrated to the United States. After living and working in New York, in 1928 he moved to Canada with his wife and children and made his home in Montreal. Despite the financial problems which he encountered throughout his life, his good humour and determination never failed nor did his devotion to the outdoors and the development of skiing. Jackrabbit became a symbol for wilderness adventure and the excitement of cross-country skiing and, through his energy and enthusiasm, managed to impart his ideals to countless others. Alice Johannsen vividly describes the way her father lived and thought, and explains the personal philosophy that shaped his activities and achievements. This enjoyable biography will appeal to a wide range of general readers and offers a rich source for studies in sport, sociology, Canadian history, and Scandinavian studies. The late Alice E. Johannsen was Director of the McGill University Museums, Director of the Gault Estate and of the Mont St-Hilaire Nature Conservation Centre, and founder and Curator of the Jackrabbit Museum in Piedmont, Quebec.

Book Synopsis The Blood Libel Legend by : Alan Dundes
Download or read book The Blood Libel Legend written by Alan Dundes and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1991-10-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Dundes, in this casebook of an anti-Semitic legend, demonstrates the power of folklore to influence thought and history. According to the blood libel legend, Jews murdered Christian infants to obtain blood to make matzah. Dundes has gathered here the work of leading scholars who examine the varied sources and elaborations of the legend. Collectively, their essays constitute a forceful statement against this false accusation. The legend is traced from the murder of William of Norwich in 1144, one of the first reported cases of ritualized murder attributed to Jews, through nineteenth-century Egyptian reports, Spanish examples, Catholic periodicals, modern English instances, and twentieth-century American cases. The essays deal not only with historical cases and surveys of blood libel in different locales, but also with literary renditions of the legend, including the ballad “Sir Hugh, or, the Jew’s Daughter” and Chaucer’s “The Prioress’s Tale.” These case studies provide a comprehensive view of the complex nature of the blood libel legend. The concluding section of the volume includes an analysis of the legend that focuses on Christian misunderstanding of the Jewish feast of Purim and the child abuse component of the legend and that attempts to bring psychoanalytic theory to bear on the content of the blood libel legend. The final essay by Alan Dundes takes a distinctly folkloristic approach, examining the legend as part of the belief system that Christians developed about Jews. This study of the blood libel legend will interest folklorists, scholars of Catholicism and Judaism, and many general readers, for it is both the literature and the history of anti-Semitism.

Book Synopsis A Companion to Twentieth-Century Poetry by : Neil Roberts
Download or read book A Companion to Twentieth-Century Poetry written by Neil Roberts and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-06-09 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century more people spoke English and more people wrote poetry than in the whole of previous history, and this Companion strives to make sense of this crowded poetical era. The original contributions by leading international scholars and practising poets were written as the contributors adjusted to the idea that the possibilities of twentieth-century poetry were exhausted and finite. However, the volume also looks forward to the poetry and readings that the new century will bring. The Companion embraces the extraordinary development of poetry over the century in twenty English-speaking countries; a century which began with a bipolar transatlantic connection in modernism and ended with the decentred heterogeneity of post-colonialism. Representation of the 'canonical' and the 'marginal' is therefore balanced, including the full integration of women poets and feminist approaches and the in-depth treatment of post-colonial poets from various national traditions. Discussion of context, intertextualities and formal approaches illustrates the increasing self-consciousness and self-reflexivity of the period, whilst a 'Readings' section offers new readings of key selected texts. The volume as a whole offers critical and contextual coverage of the full range of English-language poetry in the last century.
Book Synopsis Making a New Deal by : Lizabeth Cohen
Download or read book Making a New Deal written by Lizabeth Cohen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how it was possible and what it meant for ordinary factory workers to become effective unionists and national political participants by the mid-1930s. We follow Chicago workers as they make choices about whether to attend ethnic benefit society meetings or to go to the movies, whether to shop in local neighborhood stores or patronize the new A & P. As they made daily decisions like these, they declared their loyalty in ways that would ultimately have political significance. When the depression worsened in the 1930s, workers adopted new ideological perspectives and overcame longstanding divisions among themselves to mount new kinds of collective action. Chicago workers' experiences all converged to make them into New Deal Democrats and CIO unionists. First printed in 1990, Making a New Deal has become an established classic in American history. The second edition includes a new preface by Lizabeth Cohen.
