Book excerpt: The world nearly died on Death´s Day. Those who survived the famine, war, and plagues which followed rebuilt what once was. Isolated subcontinents reclaimed the law and rule of humanity, the prize once won from the Dragons. With the wars of rebuilding fading slowly into memory, the legacy of a long dead wizard rekindled humanity´s true nature. On the isolated and forgotten land of Inopia, Othin Cairn, healer, student, and former slave, departs his university on a clear and simple task. His path crosses many others in the sparely populated land. His journey quickly turns from one of routine and order, into a turbulent passage from theory to fact. Now, during his first excursion, Othin rediscovers Inopia, the land formerly revealed to him through book and lecture. He meets and befriends Justinian Munney, a young royal traveling under the guise of ´Elroon Newhope,´ and the beguiling ´Lady´ Ansonia Forster. Justin and Ansonia reveal a land of indulgence and hope to the inexperienced healer. When the trio happen upon the tall wizard Rabisu, Othin is taught the darkness lurking beneath humanity. Rabisu, young, brash, and powerful fears none of the beings of Inopia. Yet he flees the dark cult of Pavidus and others who seek the tall man for his arcane knowledge and the prophecy linked to him. It is a forced alliance with Rabisu which enlightens Othin on the ugliness of a world devoid of reason, ruled by lust and greed. Kings willing to sacrifice their kingdoms for a vague power foretold and creatures and beings willing to die of a purse of gold. Othin Cairn and his companions are swept through the small yet diverse land of Inopia as they too attempt to unravel the enigma of prophecy. Is it chance, fate, or the fulfillment of haunting prophecies which forever ties Othin Cairn to Stet´s Legacy? Petr Barrow welcomes your questions and comments. E-mail him at [email protected]

Book excerpt: Highlighting the "mass" nature of interwar European fascism has long become commonplace. Throughout the years, numerous critics have construed fascism as a phenomenon of mass society, perhaps the ultimate expression of mass politics. This study deconstructs this long-standing perception. It argues that the entwining of fascism with the masses is a remarkable transubstantiation of a movement which understood and presented itself as a militant rejection of the ideal of mass politics, and indeed of mass society and mass culture more broadly conceived. Thus, rather than "massifying" society, fascism was the culmination of a long effort on the part of the élites and the middle-classes to de-massify it. The perennially menacing mass – seen as plebeian and insubordinate – was to be drilled into submission, replaced by supposedly superior collective entities, such as the nation, the race, or the people. Focusing on Italian fascism and German National Socialism, but consulting fascist movements and individuals elsewhere in interwar Europe, the book incisively shows how fascism is best understood as ferociously resisting what Elias referred to as "the civilizing process" and what Marx termed "the social individual." Fascism, notably, was a revolt against what Nietzsche described as the peaceful, middling and egalitarian "Last Humans."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once regarded as a vibrant centre of intellectual, cultural and spiritual Jewish life, Lithuania was home to 240,000 Jews prior to the Nazi invasion of 1941. By war's end, less than 20,000 remained. Today, approximately 4,000 Jews reside there, among them 108 survivors from the camps and ghettos and a further 70 from the Partisans and Red Army. Against a backdrop of ongoing Holocaust dismissal and a recent surge in anti-Semitic sentiment, Holocaust Legacy in Post-Soviet Lithuania presents the history and experiences of a group of elderly Holocaust survivors in modern-day Vilnius. Using their stories and memories, their places of significance as well as biographical objects, Shivaun Woolfson considers the complexities surrounding Holocaust memory and legacy in a post-Soviet era Lithuania. The book also incorporates interdisciplinary elements of anthropology, psychology and ethnography, and is informed at its heart by a spiritual approach that marks it out from other more conventional historical treatments of the subject. Holocaust Legacy in Post-Soviet Lithuania includes 20 images, comes with comprehensive online resources and weaves together story, artefact, monument and landscape to provide a multidimensional history of the Lithuanian Jewish experience during and after the Holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Prayer is a conversationally steered and character-driven life story with the protagonist growing up and older while looking for the Lord. Having a few Christian mentors and a few mentors who appear to be agnostic, Jerry struggles his whole life through trying to distinguish between what he often feels is an infestation of Christianity along with what he knows is his infatuation with forestry and his obsession with wildlife management. Thinly disguised as Jerry, I had the following supporting characters: Papa, my grandfather and Baptist preacher who was close to God in more ways than one; Uncle Sawyer, my saw boss who insisted that the cure to all our problems was out there in the woods waiting for us to find; Ol' Professor Starlet, who was the forestry teacher who turns out to know more than we first thought when meeting him; the good Dr. Frank, who is perhaps the world's leading international forester; and Patsy, who is my main confidant still today after over fifty years of awesome marriage. Instead of reading or writing fiction or nonfiction, the fun of this genre that I like to call faction is that we get to enjoy living life over again but doing it better. If you share one of these true-life experiences with me for real and recognize my story is more like the way things should have been, it is. Rather than part of a bucket list, this is part of my to-do list of testimonies for Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. So I ask that those of you who knew me before my life became undergirded with Christianity to please remember that both Colossians and the Lord's Prayer tell us that we are to forgive one another as Christ forgave us. Locations of verses within Bible books are specifically omitted in hopes that it might encourage the reader to spend more personal time in the Good Book for him or herself. As directed by the Holy Bible not to add or take away anything from the Word, I have made that effort to the best of my ability. If I've accidentally missed, added, or misrepresented anything, then I ask that you and God please forgive me. God help me if this causes harm to anyone's faith. Author's liberty includes the following four grammatical variances for the following reasons: #1--incorrect grammar and incorrect spelling are sometimes used to better reflect characters, times, and places. After all, what's not about Christ is about people. #2--italics used all over the place are to emphasize words, phrases, and much more...like out of respect for the various names of God; verses in the Bible; books of the Bible; quotes, whether verbatim or paraphrased; and even sometimes in lieu of quotation marks or for periodic words that rhyme. #3--overuse of ellipsis is because Psalm does say to be still...and it seems the characters in the book often want you to slow down a fraction of a second longer than you might for a mere comma. #4--types or names of trees are capitalized and italicized...as it does take them to make a forest. Other books by Gerald Inmon are Yocona Puff Adder (ISBN 0-9774864-3-5) and Camp Re-Form (ISBN 0-9774864-7-2). First edition books of these two are still available in hardback hard copy by e-mailing to [email protected] or electronically through Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble's Book Nook.
