Book excerpt: Detroit debutante-turned-investigative journalist Iris Edwards gets more truth than she can handle when she tackles her rich and infamous grandfather's tell-all biography. By accepting his challenge to find his "Unforgivable Sin" and write the true story of his life, she'll have to unravel a web of Machiavellian intrigues dating back to the days of copper mines, gangsters, and rum-runners to find a deadly secret that could rewrite history.Joe Falcon, the governor's Native American physician, is on his own quest for the truth. He's lived his whole life in shadow of the powerful Edwards family, and with the old man's death, Iris becomes his only hope to solve his mother's thirty year-old murder. But before their childhood friendship can grow into something more, they'll have to understand Andrew Edwards' world; where, "Winning was everything and whoever carried the biggest stick won the game." With only a charred pocket watch and clues hidden in half-forgotten bedtime stories, they dodge Iris' gangster-wannabe ex-husband to trace his life from an Upper Peninsula ghost town to an insane asylum and the Henry Ford Museum--to find a killer, a hero, and the real meaning of truth, love and sacrifice.

The bird falls between the buttress roots of a large tree. As David reaches down to pick it up, he cuts his hand on a sharp object imbedded in a root. With the help of his camp assistant, he digs the object out and finds that it is a shiny metal cube. Back at camp, he discovers that the weight of the cube is ten times that of an equivalent volume of uranium, the heaviest known stable metal. He calls a professor friend and is directed to a specialist in Fort Collins, Colorado. In Colorado, David comes under the protection of Rocky Mountain Investigations, under an FBI contract. But things go dramatically off course when the specialist is suddenly murdered and the cube stolen. With the help of two of RMI's investigators, David learns the probable location of his cube and pursues it, running afoul of a Mexican crime boss and nearly losing his life in the process. Will David succeed in avoiding danger and turning the tables on the criminals who have stolen the cube? Find out in the compelling conclusion of Legacy of a Trogon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a 73 year old man. I spent 20 years in the US Navy, 14 years in Military Sealift Command and 6 years in the Seafarer's Union. I have traveled and spent time all over the world, and have been to the places in my book. I entered the Navy in 1965 at the age of 17, quitting school after the 10th grade. After boot camp, I was sent to Sasebo, Japan for two years. Serving on both the east and west coast I never looked back, retiring from the Navy in 1993. Since I was 16 years old I had the desire to write, encouraged by my grandmother Martha Crute, who was the Librarian in Rocky Point School, which I attended. While I was still in the Navy in 1989, I wrote my first novel Pitfall which went unpublished. Later I spent 10 years writing my first published work, Guidebook of How to Obtain Pureness of Heart to Enter Heaven. I wanted to rewrite Pitfall which was from 1956-1986. Instead I incorporated Pitfall as the second part of my novel, Legacy of Crime 1908-1986.When I think of my great American novel, this is it. From a train robbery in Nevada, which netted $200,000 in gold, to a mafia Don Named Joe Scarlotti, from Augusta, Sicily, who ran one of the five families. Lucinda "Barr" Barritonia silent film star from Hollywood who married him, moving to a Glen Cove, Long Island mansion. Bobby Barritoni is a Navy Water Tender from Rocky Point. Long Island who saved the lives of many of his shipmates after a kamikaze attack off Okinawa. Marie is a world class Ballerina, granddaughter of Don Crutini head of a rival mob. The offspring of this bunch set up the second part, which involves a falling out, of a 5 million dollar robbery of dirty money and the vengeful aftermath, with hitmen, car chases, kidnappings, and gang wars.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Booker Prize The real-life Guinness heiress offers an inside look at the lives of eccentric aristocrats in this “masterful . . . macabre fairy-tale and blackly humorous family portrait” (Literary Hub). This macabre, mordantly funny, partly auto-biographical novel reveals the gothic craziness behind the scenes in the great houses of the aristocracy, as witnessed through the unsparing eyes of an orphaned teenage girl. Great Granny Webster herself is a fabulous monster, the chilliest of matriarchs, presiding with steely self-regard over a landscape of ruined lives. Great Granny Webster is Caroline Blackwood’s masterpiece. Heiress to the Guinness fortune, Blackwood was celebrated as a great beauty and dazzling raconteur long before she made her name as a strikingly original writer.

Book excerpt: A compelling reconstruction of the life of a black suffragist, Adella Hunt Logan, blending family lore, historical research, and literary imagination "Both a definitive rendering of a life and a remarkable study of the interplay of race and gender in an America whose shadows still haunt us today.”—Henry Louis Gates, Jr. “If you combine the pleasures of a seductive novel, discovering a real American heroine, and learning the multiracial history of this country that wasn't in our textbooks, you will have an idea of the great gift that Adele Logan Alexander has given us.”—Gloria Steinem Born during the Civil War into a slaveholding family that included black, white, and Cherokee forebears, Adella Hunt Logan dedicated herself to advancing political and educational opportunities for the African American community. She taught at Alabama’s Tuskegee Institute but also joined the segregated woman suffrage movement, passing for white in order to fight for the rights of people of color. Her determination—as a wife, mother, scholar, and activist —to challenge the draconian restraints of race and gender generated conflicts that precipitated her tragic demise. Historian Adele Logan Alexander—Adella Hunt Logan’s granddaughter—portrays Adella, her family, and contemporaries such as Booker T. Washington, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Theodore Roosevelt, and W. E. B. Du Bois. Alexander bridges the chasms that frustrate efforts to document the lives of those who traditionally have been silenced, weaving together family lore, historical research, and literary imagination into a riveting, multigenerational family saga.

In the Days of Our Grandmothers is a collection of essays detailing how Aboriginal women have found their voice in Canadian society over the past three centuries. Collected in one volume for the first time, these essays critically situate Aboriginal women in the fur trade, missions, labour and the economy, the law, sexuality, and the politics of representation. Leading scholars in their fields demonstrate important methodologies and interpretations that have advanced the fields of Aboriginal history, women's history, and Canadian history. A scholarly introduction lays the groundwork for understanding how Aboriginal women's history has been researched and written and a comprehensive bibliography leads readers in new directions. In the Days of our Grandmothers is essential reading for students and anyone interested in Aboriginal history in Canada.

Interpretred and translated from the Korean by Youngsook Han. magine strolling along the windy shores of Jeju Island, off the southwest coast of Korea. Suddenly, you hear whistling echoing from the sea. Turning to the water, you spot weathered faces bobbing to the surface, and you realize that the sound is the exhaled breath of sea women, known as haenyeo. With a sigh of gratitude, the aging divers have returned to the surface to replenish their aching lungs. Jeju Island's haenyeo are a dying breed--perhaps the last of their generation. As their maternal ancestors did for centuries, they have scoured the island's sea floor, harvesting seaweed, octopuses, sea urchins, turban shells, and abalone. Their numbers have dwindled from 15,000 in the 1970s to approximately 5,600 in recent decades. Driven by economics, these free-divers continue to labor well into their eighties--the hardier ones often plunging 65 feet while holding their breath for two minutes or longer. Brenda Paik Sunoo gathered these women's stories while living in their diving villages for a total of seven months between 2007 and 2009. MOON TIDES is the first book by an American journalist to document the lives of these rare divers through intimate interviews and photographs. Their stories will appeal to those of us desiring a life of purpose--undulating and infinite as the sea.
