Book excerpt: A story about the fight for equal rights in America's favorite arena: the baseball field! Every boy in the neighborhood knows Katy Gordon is their best pitcher, even though she's a girl. But when she tries out for Little League, it's a whole different story. Girls are not eligible, period. It is a boy's game and always has been. It's not fair, and Katy's going to fight back. Inspired by what she's learning about civil rights in school, she sets out to prove that she's not the only girl who plays baseball. With the help of friendly librarians and some tenacious research skills, Katy discovers the forgotten history of female ball players. Why does no one know about them? Where are they now? And how can one ten-year-old change people’s minds about what girls can do? Set in 1957—the world of Sputnik and Leave It to Beaver, saddle shoes and "Heartbreak Hotel"—Out of Left Field is both a detailed picture of a fascinating historic period and a timelessly inspiring story about standing up for equality at any age.

Book excerpt: When Jesus walked this earth, he spent time with the messes. A lonely thief. An unwelcome dinner guest. A death-row criminal facing his final hours on earth. What do all of these people have in common? They all faced the messiness of life. Some made the mess themselves. Some were thrown headfirst into a mess through no fault of their own. Then something changed. It wasn't that they suddenly became unmessy. But they each came face to face with Jesus, and he invited them to be part of God's story. He didn't leave them out. This 40-day devotional looks at eight encounters Jesus had with messy, broken people. In short, daily readings, you'll explore each story and see how Jesus met each person in their mess. The eight stories we'll be walking through together are: Jesus Meets The Lonely Thief Jesus Meets The Know-It-All Jesus Meets The Unwelcome Dinner Guest Jesus Meets The Woman Who Was Exploited Jesus Meets The Sick Woman & The Dead Girl Jesus Meets The Blind Man With Perfect Vision Jesus Sees The Invisible Widow Jesus Meets The Honest Criminal Whether you've been following Jesus your whole life or have never cracked open a Bible, Nobody Left Out: Jesus Meets the Messes will remind you that God's love is big enough for everyone.... He doesn't want anyone left out!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radical black left that played a crucial role in twentieth-century struggles for equality and justice has largely disappeared. Michael Dawson investigates the causes and consequences of the decline of black radicalism as a force in American politics and argues that the conventional left has failed to take race sufficiently seriously as a historical force in reshaping American institutions, politics, and civil society. African Americans have been in the vanguard of progressive social movements throughout American history, but they have been written out of many histories of social liberalism. Focusing on the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the Black Power movement, Dawson examines successive failures of socialists and Marxists to enlist sympathetic blacks, and white leftists’ refusal to fight for the cause of racial equality. Angered by the often outright hostility of the Socialist Party and similar social democratic organizations, black leftists separated themselves from these groups and either turned to the hard left or stayed independent. A generation later, the same phenomenon helped fueled the Black Power movement’s turn toward a variety of black nationalist, Maoist, and other radical political groups. The 2008 election of Barack Obama notwithstanding, many African Americans still believe they will not realize the fruits of American prosperity any time soon. This pervasive discontent, Dawson suggests, must be mobilized within the black community into active opposition to the social and economic status quo. Black politics needs to find its way back to its radical roots as a vital component of new American progressive movements.

Ninth-grader Jonah is not a jock. On the contrary, he loves history class and nerdy movies, and his athletic ineptitude verges on tragic. So, what’s he doing signing up for the baseball team? Could it have something to do with the cute shortstop, Elliot? For the rest of high school, Jonah faces challenges on and off the baseball field, from heteronormative social pressure to thrilling romance. Realizing who his real friends are, he figures out what really matters and finally recognizes and embraces his gay identity. Based on debut author-illustrator Jonah Newman’s coming-of-age experiences, Out of Left Field is a big-hearted and funny YA graphic novel about learning to be yourself. “Brilliantly written and illustrated high school story that deftly showcases the triumphs and regrets of friendship and finding oneself. A remarkable debut!” —Dav Pilkey, #1 bestselling graphic novelist “First base, first boyfriends, and believing in yourself—Out of Left Field is a charming tour of the mistakes and triumphs of coming out in high school.” —Ngozi Ukazu, award-winning creator of Check, Please!

Book excerpt: "A girl doesn't belong on the all-star team. She isn't tough enough." The coaches and parents didn't even bother to whisper. To them, I was not an all-star. I was the girl playing shortstop. I was the girl up to bat. I was the easy out. For weeks, I went to practice and stared down a coach who lobbed me the ball and stuck me on the bench. Then I went home to a father who told me I needed to play harder and study more. Nothing I did on the field or in school was ever enough. One day I stood up at the plate with what felt like three strikes already against me. It came down to one pitch, one swing...one moment to prove them all wrong. -- Rosie

Book excerpt: Let in But Left Out argues that fake news can fool people but not a pandemic. Filled with provocative insights, military intrigue and personal stories of tragedy and triumph, the award-winning African American IBM management consultant and former Air Force officer brings you Let in But Left Out: Leadership, Faith & Knowledge in the Age of AI, Coronavirus & Fake News. In Let in But Left Out, author Frank Shines posits that major crises such as a pandemic accelerate technology change and expose societal and leadership weaknesses. Frank grew up in the projects of Oakland, California but went on to earn a Presidential Appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy and served his country for 11 years. Let in but Left Out, is a field guide for adapting to change in a world of coronavirus outbreaks, civil unrest, AI-powered fake news, and national polarization. Frank Shines, who has flown Air Force jets, trained and competed with Olympic athletes and traveled the world advising business leaders and top military brass, brings these true-to-life experiences on adapting to change to the book. Frank teams up with his younger brother, Granison Shines, to take you on a journey which chronicles the initial outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China and the early warning signs detected by one his family's small businesses that partners with Chinese hi-tech manufacturers in Shenzhen. The brothers analyze the pandemic through the lens of data, bio science, culture change and technology, and provide you with a practical roadmap for surviving and thriving in the age of pandemics and AI-powered "infodemics." The book is divided into three major sections: A Call for Reflection (situational awareness, cognitive bias, faith and spirituality); A Call for Balance (if you let in the virus you must let in the science; if you let in inequality you must let in upward mobility; if you let in tech disruption you must let in people transition); and A Call for Action (get off your butt and act!) In short, the authors ask, has America... Let In VIRTUAL but Left Out REALITY? Let In a CORONAVIRUS but Left Out BIO SCIENCE? Let in DISRUPTION but Left Out TRANSITION? Let In FAKE NEWS but Left Out CRITICAL THINKING? Let In INEQUALITY but Left Out UPWARD MOBILITY? Let In SCREEN TIME but Left Out PEOPLE TIME? Let In PERSONAL GAIN but Left Out COLLECTIVE PURPOSE? Book excerpt: "The road out to the Bromfman farm in late August is no different from thousands of other roads to grain farms in Kansas-hard-baked dirt dusted with a fine powder of yellow clay that shifts almost imperceptibly with the slightest movement of the air. Randy Larsen was on his way to the farm in response to a call saying someone had died out there." The suspenseful story of a poor farming family in which each generation holds the next in its deadly, predictable grip until murderous opposition explodes. The characters of The Parts Left Out are all beautifully drawn and sympathetic in their own way, are determined to escape their fate, and some seem close to doing so. Thomas Ogden's debut novel has received international recognition and Best Seller Ranking: Number Four on the Israeli Best Seller List for the year 2017--Ha'Aretz Newspaper ("The New York Times of Israel") Israel's Critics' Choice 2017 Top 10 works of fiction. 'A beautiful and touching novel.' - Maariv, Tel Aviv 'Without any harshness, and with a steady voice, Ogden writes the story of trauma, transmitted from one generation to the next, until it is interrupted, violently.' - Ha'aretz, Tel Aviv 'Thomas Ogden, who is perhaps the most renowned psychoanalyst writing today, demonstrates his prowess as a writer of fiction in his stunning debut novel, The Parts Left Out. His keen eye for the complexity of human relationships and human frailties makes the characters so real and compelling that they seem to step out of the page. Ogden's novel confirms that the truest concepts developed in psychoanalysis have already appeared in the insight of the artist. This story takes hold of the reader in its opening paragraphs and does not let go until its heart-wrenching ending has been told. I found this book almost impossible to put down.'- Antonino Ferro, M.D., President of the Italian Psychoanalytic Association 'Ogden writes movingly and convincingly about everyday life, at the same time that he writes tragedy. . . The dialogue rings true psychologically, at the same time that it is unnerving . . . I do not find this a conventional novel in the sense of offering a smooth or consistent narrative, much less a single point of view. Rather it is jumpy, unsettling . . . but this is also, I believe, its strength.'- Madelon Sprengnether, Regents Professor of English, University of Minnesota, International Journal of Psychoanalysis 'Not only is Thomas Ogden the most creative psychoanalytic author writing today, but in this novel he shows himself to be a wonderful teller of tales. The Parts Left Out is an auspicious achievement. As a work of fiction it succeeds in accomplishing the most difficult of feats: to be both a spellbinder and an in-depth exploration of human traits that bring on unspeakable tragedy. Tom Ogden knows the human mind as few do. In The Parts Left Out he demonstrates his remarkable understanding not only of the mind, but of the human heart as well.' - Theodore Jacobs, MD, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association

Book excerpt: There's no playing it safe in love or baseball in this sparkling debut, perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Kasie West. Marnie has never had a hard time fitting in with the guys. It would take a lot more than their goofy antics to keep her from joining them at the neighborhood sandlot to do what she loves best: play ball. An added perk of hanging out at the sandlot? Spending time with Cody Kinski, their high school's star pitcher and Marnie's best friend. Sure, he can be stubborn and annoying. He also knows how to make her laugh and respects her skills on the field. And when he gets nailed in the arm by a bone-fracturing pitch, Marnie becomes the team's best chance at making it to the playoffs. Except no one told the guys they're supposed to be on her side. With her own team against her, Marnie begins questioning her abilities. And when fate throws her a curveball, can she play without losing the game, Cody, and her belief in herself?
