He and I had some extraordinary conversations about his life and his take on the nature of our humanity. He told me about things that happened to him over a lifetime and how they impacted his view of the world. Melanoma White spent years traveling the world, but his real journey materialized within his own soul. He told me about his disappointment that it took him an eternity to understand the true nature of his emotions. Over four decades he discovered how poisoned our society is and how our basic instincts still govern our behavior. I was on a business trip to Alaska and as I checked in at the hotel reception, I spotted him sitting at the bar. He was an older man with a short beard and as I looked at him, all I could think of was an old soul. Over the following ten days, I got to know him as we conversed over food and wine. During several of our talks, I could see the melancholy in his eyes while he journeyed through his personal awakening. I've tried my best to gather his memories and thoughts in a collection of short stories depicting his most salient moments. They were events which triggered a profound spiritual change in him and ultimately resulted in a 180-degree reversal in how he lived. Melanoma White was an unwilling subject to existential enlightenment. His belief system was broken down, event by event until he realized who he really was. He spent years searching for reasons to justify conforming with expected white man norms but was challenged in his beliefs every step of the way. In some cases, he struggled to make up new reasons to justify his ill-treatment of others. Life gave him all the answers he needed, with pain, disappointment, and embarrassment. This book contains questions of a restless mind that combatted change until just recently.
