Book excerpt: Leek is a small market town in north Staffordshire, nestling at the foot of an area of Millstone-grit crags known as 'the Roaches' (French Roches – rocks). These rocks are surrounded by moorland whose specialist wildlife until recently included escaped Wallabies. Although Leek's population has now grown to around 20,000 it remains a small place, still closely associated with the countryside; it now hosts possibly the only weekly livestock market in Staffordshire. Leek grew from being simply a market town to an industrial town through textile dying and weaving and although these have all but disappeared, textile-mills, some disused and some pressed into other uses, still tower over the town. There are also many other historic buildings which attract tourists. It is to be hoped that current changes that seem to be being imposed on the people of Leek will not seriously damage the charm and character of this quiet town.

The Romany people have been variously portrayed as exotic strangers or as crude, violent, delinquent “gypsies.” For the first time, this book describes the real history of the Romany in England from the inside. Drawing on new archival and first-hand research, Jeremy Harte vividly describes the itinerant life of the Romany as well as their artistic traditions, unique language, and flamboyant ceremonies. Travelers through Time tells the dramatic story of Romany life on the British margins from Tudor times through today, filled with vivid insights into the world of England’s large Romany population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brilliantly inventive and original. This debut novel tells the story of Calamity Leek: a girl who has never been allowed beyond the garden wall, until now. Lying in her hospital bed, broken, burned and scared, Calamity still believes that Aunty loved her. For as long as she can remember, Calamity, along with her sixteen sisters, lived in a Garden behind the Wall of Safekeeping. Like it said in Aunty's Appendix on the first page of the Ps: 'Everything has a purpose', and they were being trained for a very special one. In the Ns the Appendix said, 'Nosiness leads to nonsense'. As Calamity sees it, this is what led to their Garden's downfall, because when the sisters started questioning what was outside the Wall, they started questioning what was happening inside it too. But doubt is contagious. Watching your world crumble is frightening. And people who are frightened can be dangerous.

Book excerpt: Australia was a grim place during the Great Depression. Bettiing was inexpensive entertainment for the masses, but outlawed, police were forced to pit themselves against their public who flouted the law. Mendelssohn Bartholdy Miller was a young office called to this duty, but discovered a world of .corruption. He was ostracised, shunned and considered a ''rat'' for refusing to take part. This is a story of one man's battle against the odds to hold to the truth he knew about police corruption in an era of SP betting suppression that led to three Royal Commissions that rocked the State. It is also a tale of opportunites seized by gangsters, murderers and thugs in an era where crime flourished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Etruscans and the History of Dentistry offers a study of the construction and use of gold dental appliances in ancient Etruscan culture, and their place within the framework of a general history of dentistry, with special emphasis on appliances, from Bronze Age Mesopotamia and Egypt to modern Europe and the Americas. Included are many of the ancient literary sources that refer to dentistry - or the lack thereof - in Greece and Rome, as well as the archaeological evidence of ancient dental health. The book challenges many past works in exposing modern scholars’ fallacies about ancient dentistry, while presenting the incontrovertible evidence of the Etruscans’ seemingly modern attitudes to cosmetic dentistry.
