Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System The following clinical lectures were delivered at the New York State Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, and at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, by Prof. William A. Hammond, and I have collected them with the hope that they might serve to add something to the clinical literature of nervous diseases. I have endeavored to report these lectures in full, and together with the histories of the cases, which were prepared by myself after careful study and prolonged observation, they constitute a clinical volume which, while it does not claim to he exhaustive, or to embrace all the diseases of the nervous system, will nevertheless be found to contain many of the more important affections of the kind that are commonly met with in practice. As these lectures were intended especially for the benefit of students, the chief aim of the author has been to present merely practical views, fully illustrated by cases, with the results derived from treatment, as far as that was possible; and in so doing he has made no attempt to enter into the pathology or the morbid anatomy, but has confined himself to a full consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the treatment of each affection, particularly in their relations to the cases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System This course of lectures, delivered during the winter of 1874-75, was not originally intended for publication; but, at the urgent and repeated request of many of the alumni of the Missouri Medical College, the author has devoted all possible moments of leisure, whilst not engaged in his professional duties, to revising, correcting, and preparing for the press the copious notes taken by V. Biart, M.D., his former pupil. In offering this volume to the profession, the author cannot, as an inducement to its perusal, claim for it originality either as to its facts or as to its theories. It is particularly designed for students and practitioners who have neither the time nor the opportunity for recourse to numerous authorities, - the aim being to present a thorough digest of the extensive field of medical literature on the subject of nervous diseases, and at the same time, so far as is consistent with a true portraiture of the maladies delineated and a clear idea of their characteristic features, to avoid diffuseness of detail and of description. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at Guy's Hospital In presenting this work to my readers, I may fairly be expected to preface it with a few words of explanation. In the year 1868 a part of my course on Medicine delivered at Guy's Hospital relating to nervous diseases was published in a periodical form. Ever since that time the lectures have been frequently perused by my pupils, who have constantly demanded of me their reprint in a separate form. To this appeal, so often made, I now respond in the present volume. It contains my original lectures with the additional matter which a subsequent ten years has enabled me to accumulate. Much of this has already appeared in the Guy's Hospital Reports, ' but its repetition in this volume was inevitable, since it is evident that the cases which have been thought of snifi cient importance to publish separately would necessarily be the most valuable ones with which to illustrate my lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of Lectures Upon Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Medical Department of Columbia University, New York Examples. The nervous system of a frog experimentally deprived of its hemispheres, capable of automatic acts of swimming. The automatic act of respiration in man. In man the facial, laryngeal, intercostal, thoracic, and diaphragmatic respiratory muscles act in definite succession and rhythm in the act of breathing; and this act is presided over by a single centre in the medulla controlling the lower medullary and spinal centres. The highest type of nervous system is the complex type. There are the lower centres as in the simple type. There are higher centres controlling the lower centres, as in the compound type. There is a supreme mass controlling both the others. This is the form found in all vertebrates, and the degree of evolution in the highest or supreme mass determines the place of the animal in the scale of intelligence. In man the supreme mass is the cerebral cortex, the next lower or automatic centres are the optic thalami and basal ganglia, including gray masses in the cerebral axis; the lowest or reflex centres are the cranial nerve nuclei in the cerebral axis and the gray matter of the spinal cord segments. These distant gray masses are joined with one another in all possible combinations by means of the white nerve tracts, which pass in all directions around and within them. The human nervous system consists of a peripheral system and a central system. The peripheral system comprises all the nerves. The central system includes: First. The spinal cord and cranial nerve nuclei. Secondly. The cerebellum; gray masses of the medulla, pons, and crura cerebri; corpora quadrigemina, optic thalami, and corpora striata. Thirdly. The cerebral cortex. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System: Especially in Women The case to which I drew your attention at my last clinic is here again, a girl, rather wanting in the signs of sexual ripeness, although sixteen years old. You will recall the fact that she lost the use of the right arm because of having been alarmed. The scare brought on what every woman knows as an attack of hysterics - our ancestors called it the vapors. The girl cried and laughed by turns, and then had a slight fit, on coming out of which she could no longer lift her right arm, or rather she could lift it but a few inches. On finding this to be the case, she grew much concerned, and by and by could not lift it at all, the idea that it could not be raised helping, as is apt to be the case, to make the trouble worse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at La Salpètrière Although but recently published in Paris, the Lec tures of Professor Charcot on Diseases of the Nervous System have already taken a place amongst the classic works of medical literature, and been translated into several Continental languages. When preparing for the following version, it was judged best to await the appearance of the second French edition; thus the reader, in exchange for some delay, has been enabled to obtain the work in its most correct form, enlarged by about one-sixth. It was found inconvenient to repro duce the ten plates appended to the French volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures and Essays on Diseases of the Nervous System While engaged in writing my work on Medicine, the thought was continually before me that, on its completion, I might supplement it by the publication in a separate volume of series of cases illustrative of its different chapters, and of the facts and opinions stated in them. And, as a matter of fact, I did after its publication begin to collect cases with this object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of the Spinal Cord The lectures published in this book were taken from those delivered at the Faculty of Medicine in the summer of 1891. Although but little altered, some works which appeared during the course of their publication were of such great importance that it seemed unwise to neglect them, and they were consequently utilized by me. I have advisedly given the name of "Lectures" to this publication, more freedom of speech being thus allowed, while it may constantly be recognized during its perusal that the book is specially written for the purpose of "teaching." Since some diseases only of the spinal cord are described in this book, I have endeavoured to discuss these as completely as possible. Numerous works have been consulted upon this branch of nervous pathology, care being taken to name their authors, although it did not accord with the plan of this publication to indicate the name of every book to which allusion is made. Those mentioned have been somewhat arbitrarily chosen, their importance, their novelty, and the difficulty in obtaining them being specially considered. Little will be found in this work about the pathology of any special symptom. Thus I have purposely omitted to discuss the mechanism of the inco-ordination which occurs in tabes. Our knowledge with respect to this and other similar conditions is so rudimentary, and the opinions expressed about them are so contradictory that, as I believe, it is better to await a more propitious epoch before doing this. The study of AEtiology on the other hand owing to the immense progress made in general pathology is steadily advancing; to this portion of the subject I have devoted special attention, since it is from a knowledge of it that Therapeutics worthy of the name must be derived. The symptoms have also been carefully studied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syphilis and the Nervous System: Being a Revised Reprint of the Lettsomian Lectures for 1890 Delivered Before the Medical Society of London These lectures, delivered three years ago, are now reprinted on account of the frequency with which I find it necessary to refer to statements made in them, and the inconvenience of being obliged to refer a reader to the Medical Journals in which the lectures originally appeared. Two translated reprints have been published, and this renders their reproduction in the English language the more desirable. Moreover, I have taken the opportunity of carefully revising them, and have made a large number of additions. These, although not obtrusive or extensive, will, I hope, be found to increase the practical value of what is said, and may serve to bring the lectures up to the level of our present knowledge if they are below this in their original form. At the same time, their scope and character make the need for such additions insignificant. Their chief object is to enable those who read them to grasp more firmly the cases they meet with, and to understand better the methods of dealing with the disease in practical thought and actual work. My thanks are due Dr. D. D. Stewart, of Philadelphia, for assistance in reading proof, and for preparing the index.
