This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this bibliography, the main purpose was to assemble references to published material of a sociolinguistic nature concerning the Irish language. The intent was not to cover publications treating language per se, but rather to consider those dealing with language in its social context. Represented here are articles, chapters, books and pamphlets bearing upon social, historical, psychological and educational aspects of Irish – including the decline of the language, the restoration effort, the relationship of language to nationality and religion, and studies of important figures in the language movement.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Language in Ireland 1366-1922 by : Tony Crowley
Download or read book The Politics of Language in Ireland 1366-1922 written by Tony Crowley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost a thousand years language has been an important and contentious issue in Ireland but above all it reflects the great themes of Irish history: colonial, invasion, native resistance, religious and cultural difference. Collected here for the first time are texts on language from the date of the first legislation against the Irish: the Statute of Kilkenny, 1366, to the constitution of the Free State in 1922. Crowley's introduction connects these texts to current debates, giving The Belfast Agreement as a textual example and illustrating that the language debates continue today. Divided into six historical sections with detailed editor's introductions, this unique sourcebook includes familiar cultural texts such as essays and letters by Yeats along side less familiar writings including the Preface to the New Testament in Irish. (1602). Providing direct access to original texts, this is an historical resource book which can be used as a case study in the relations between language and cultural identity.

Book Synopsis Building Irish Identity in America, 1870-1915 by : Úna Ní Bhroiméil
Download or read book Building Irish Identity in America, 1870-1915 written by Úna Ní Bhroiméil and published by Four Courts Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaelicization was a deliberate attempt to reclaim the distinctive identity and civilization of the Irish people. The Irish language was at its core. At the end of the 19th century there was a flowering of Irish cultural nationalism in Ireland and in the United States. Although there was a substantial body of Irish speakers in America, language maintenance was not a priority for them. Rather, the formation of Gaelic societies and the cultivation of the Irish language became a building block of ethnic pride. This embracing of ethnicity in its most advantageous form became a tool of assimilation for the American Irish. Although the Gaelic movements in Ireland and in the United States appeared to be one, they were separate with different focuses. To the Gaelic League in Ireland, the language movement in the United States was an inspiration and a valuable financial resource. The League's missions to America were primarily fund-raising tours for the home organization. The Gaelic societies in the United States were focused primarily on the American Irish and on their need for asserting a distinctive and cultured identity in the new world. -- Publisher description
