Book excerpt: The first major biblical commentary from the pen of N. T. Wright While full of theological import, Paul’s letter to the Galatians also captures and memorializes a significant moment in the early history of Christianity. This commentary from N. T. Wright—the inaugural volume of the CCF series—offers a theological interpretation of Galatians that never loses sight of the political concerns of its historical context. With these two elements of the letter in dialogue with each other, readers can understand both what Paul originally meant and how his writing might be faithfully used to respond to present questions. Each section of verse-by-verse commentary in this volume is followed by Wright’s reflections on what the text says about Christian formation today, making this an excellent resource for individual readers and those preparing to teach or preach on Galatians. The focus on formation is especially appropriate for this biblical letter, in which Paul wrote to his fellow early Christians, “My children—I seem to be in labor with you all over again, until the Messiah is fully formed in you!”

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ... IV. THE VISIT TO JERUSALEM. Chapter i., 18.--Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. Chapter ii., i.--Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus also with me." TAKING these verses as finger-posts to indicate the subject for our consideration, I will endeavour to explain the facts which St. Paul mentions in these two chapters, and point out the great doctrine which he was anxious to teach the Galatians, as well as all mankind. Immediately after his conversion and baptism St. Paul preached the gospel to the people of Damascus, and, knowing as we do that his natural and spiritual gifts were great, we can have no difficulty in believing that he must have proclaimed Christ's truth to the unbelievers there with great force and fervour. But the greater his force and fervour, the greater the opposition which he met with among the people, especially the Jews, who conspired together to give themselves no rest until they were able to kill him. How short-sighted they must have been we can well imagine; for could they have put a stop to the preaching of the gospel by simply taking away the life of Paul? Were there no other preachers? or could not God have raised up another Paul? Those who suppose that, by means of violence or murder, they could gain their object, simply deceive themselves. The design of the Jews was not realised. When it was discovered that they intended killing the apostle, he acted according to the teaching of our Saviour--" when they persecute you in one city flee ye unto another." Paul, therefore, left Damascus quietly by night, and did not at once return to Jerusalem, but went to Mount Sinai, where, fifteen hundred years before, Moses...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Other Gospels: Or Lectures on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians The differences which divide Catholics from those who still profess Christianity, yet remain outside the Catholic Church, are far from superficial. They have their roots in a fundamental differ ence which lies deeper down than is generally supposed. That difference is as to the Messianic or Apos tolic character and office of the Incarnate Word. Catholics and those who, while claiming the name of Christian, are not Catholics, are at issue not only as to the past aspect of the temporal mission of the Son of God, but also as to the nature of His present work on earth, and as to the mode of His present influence on the souls of men. Agreement on this fundamental issue would by the grace of God, speedily result in agreement with regard to those points of difference which lie upon the surface and more readily strike the eye. The difference is commonly supposed to con cern principally the constitution of the Christian Church, as it is the mystical Body of Christ. The writer believes that it rather concerns, and con cerns primarily, Christ Himself, as He is the Head of that Body. This conviction has led him to publish the fol lowing considerations in the hope that, in these days of inquiry and of doubt, they may aid men of good-will' on their way towards the possession of that 'peace of believing' which springs from the obedience of faith.' The lectures have in substance been delivered in the churches of the Society at Edinburgh and at Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Martin Luther's most comprehensive work on justification by faith, his commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians is translated and edited from the Latin into a lively style, paralleling his spoken lectures. Combined with the passion and faith expressed in these lectures, the biblical foundation for the crucial doctrine of justification is underscored and expressed to a new audience. The commentary is also a historical document, a recording of a professor in a classroom in 1531 from July to December of that year, which expresses the Reformer's commitment to the good news of Jesus' death in the sinner's place, challenging the reader/hearer to compare St. Paul's theology with what he/she hears in the church today.
