Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures of Diseases of Children: A Handbook for Physicians and Students I need lose no time concerning my choice of the form of lectures, which has long been in vogue. Without disregarding its defects, I consider the advantages of this method, its informal character and more pleasant reading, as even greater than its disadvantages. To this may be added the fact that it considerably facilitates the intro duction of reports of cases which serve, at the same time, as illustra tions. I hepe that the numerous reports of cases which I present to the reader will be of service to him, and I therefore beg that they be not overlooked. I have always endeavored to report the cases as briefly as possible, to bring into prominence the chief factors in ques tion, and to avoid the intolerable length and tediousness of accurate clinical histories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Disorders and Diseases of Childhood The original plan of this work was the putting together of lectures delivered at King's College Hospital and at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street; and in accordance therewith I had intended to call the volume Lectures on Diseases of Children'. But as the patchwork grew it became evident that, if it was to be in any sense a connected whole, it would be well to combine with the lectures other clinical studies, which had been written at various times for other purposes. Some of these studies, as also of the lectures, have appeared already in medical journals or in hospital reports, but only very few in the form in which they now appear, for larger experience has called for modifications and additions, and I have not scrupled to mutilate and transform my progeny until they bear scarce the semblance of their former selves. For the most part, however, these chapters appear now for the first time, and having abandoned my original scheme, I was at a loss to find a name for my farrago libelli It is no systematic treatise, it has no claim to vie with the many textbooks which deal with the whole subject of disease in childhood, nor indeed is it written on the lines which a systematic work demands; I have chosen rather to be selective and discursive as it suited my bent; I have dis regarded altogether that sense of proportion and perspective which is of the very essence of a systematic textbook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood A moment's satisfaction may be pardoned me in thank fully acknowledging these evidences that my toil has not been fruitless. But it is with no feeling of flattered vanity that I now lay down my pen. The revision in mature age of the labours of one's youth must, with most persons, minister to self-reproach rather than to self-satisfaction. The same unsolved problems meet one's eye now as met it years ago one's deficiencies are felt more deeply; they seem graver and less excusable as the time for remedying them passm by; one longs for the leisure gone, for the energies of former years, which one fancies, coupled with the sober ness of advancing life, might help to add something more and better to the common store of knowledge. I can for my part say most honestly, that nothing will give me greater pleasure than to see some younger man, better furnished for the task than I was, devote himself to the cultivation of that field where I have laboured. No one would greet the skilled husbandman more heartily than I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Diseases of Children: Being the Lettsomian Lectures Delivered Before the Medical Society of London, March, 1863 Mr. President and gentlemen, - The diseases of children have, from an early period Of the practice Of the healing art, monopolised a considerable portion of the attention Of the surgeon; although it has been reserved for men of the present century to enter more scientifically into the subject, to search out the peculiarities of the child's diseases, and to elucidate the differences which are to be Observed between the affections of early and adult life. Hence it is only within the last few years that the diseases of children have been shaped into a spe ciality, and have exclusively occupied the attention of some Of the leading members Of our profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on Certain of the Diseases of Young Children In October, 1849, as a considerable number of students had already assembled, I engaged to address to them several pre liminary Lectures on the subject of children's diseases. The following pages contain the substance of what I then said to the Class who honored me with their attendance. Inasmuch as the regular business of my professorship was to commence on the first of November, and as the chief object of my appointment is to give instruction at that College on Obstetrics, I felt obliged to break off the series of remarks on disorders of children, in order to lay the foundations of such doctrine on Midwifery as I proposed to teach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend of Diseases of Children: Especially Adapted for the Use of Medical Students Compendium der Kinderkrankheiten, translated many years ago with the cooperation of Dr. E. J. Doe/ring, while fellow stu dents at the University of Berlin. This joint translation in time became the basis of an annual course of lectures delivered at the Chicago Medical College, and these lectures recondensed have furnished the material for this Compend. At this date it would be difficult, if not impossible, to state exactly how much credit should revert to Henoch, Kormann, Bouchut, Baginsky, Steiner and others, all of whom were drawn upon freely in the preparation of these lectures, and in a work of this character, individual acknowledgment has not been attempted except in case of direct quotation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Children This book has been written not for the specialist, but with the needs Of the general practitioner and student in view, and the diseases of children have been described as they are seen by the busy practitioner in his daily rounds. Believing that the question of infant feeding is one of the most important which confronts us, much more Space has been devoted to that subject than is given other important ones; We wish to interest the general practitioner in milk, its care and handling, the necessity for the formation of certified milk com missions, and the establishment of milk depots where certified milk may be placed within the reach Of the poor. Each disease is considered in a methodical manner. Special attention is given the dietetic and hygienic management, and the medicinal treatment is considered quite fully, with the repro duction of many tried formulae. Chapters have been included on Diseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, and the Skin. Temperature charts have been reproduced in a number of places, with the hope that this valuable clinical aid will be more Often employed in private practice than it is at present. A world of valuable data and statistics is lost because of the practitioner's failure properly to record bedside notes in daily visits to the private patient. We would encourage this feature Of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases and Physical Education of Children I have been requested to make such additions to the well-known work of the late Professor Eberle on the Diseases of Children, as would render it still more accept, able to the profession. The original treatise having been stereotyped, it was deemed unadvisable to interfere with the permanent arrangement of the volume, further than to fill the vacant spaces at the close of many of the items with suitable notes of a practical nature.
