I have now to state that the Congregational Lecture here offered to the public has not been de livered to a larger audience than a select class of students in a theological college. This may account for some peculiarities of treatment. My choice of theme was in part determined by observing the comparatively small space in biblical literature which has been devoted to the mission of John the Baptist.
