Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Art, and Poems Beside the long and serious illness through which he passed, his spirit was destined to suffer a deeper wound by the death of Mrs. Allston, in London, during the same year. These events gave to his mind a more earnest and undivided interest in his spiritual relations, and drew him more closely than ever before to his religious duties. He received the rite of confirmation, and through life was a devout adherent to the Christian doctrine and discipline. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Lectures on Poetry This volume consists of lectures delivered during my tenure of the Chair of Poetry at Oxford and not included in Shakespearean Tragedy. Most of them have been enlarged, and all have been revised. As they were given at intervals, and the majority before the publication of that book, they contained repetitions which I have not found it possible wholly to remove. Readers of a lecture published by the University of Manchester on English Poetry and German Philosophy in the Age of Wordsworth will pardon also the restatement of some ideas expressed in it. The several lectures are dated, as I have been unable to take account of most of the literature on their subjects published since they were delivered. They are arranged in the order that seems best to me, but it is of importance only in the case of the four which deal with the poets of Wordsworth's time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Classical Subjects I Have called this book 'Lectures, ' partly because a simple title of this kind would have been natural to the Greeks and Romans, partly because I could not devise one which would describe it more exactly. An old Oxford rhyme has been in my mind: 'Do not to many lectures go, For whether you do so or no, You'll find the substance of his notes Much better in the books he quotes' - 'much better, ' no doubt, intrinsically, but often scattered, and not very accessible, and sometimes too controversial and complicated to be of use to the student. The Professional Scholar will not find much, if anything, that is new to him in this volume. It is not to him that it is addressed: 'Persium non curo legere, Laelium Decumum volo.' This D. Laelius, Cicero says, was 'vir bonus et non inlitteratus, sed nihil ad Persium.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Poetry The main substance of the following pages consists of public lectures given to the University of Oxford in the years 1907 to 1911. Together with two volumes previously published, The Springs of Helicon (1909) and Lectures on Greek Poetry (1910), this volume contains all the lectures given by me from the Chair of Poetry, except a few which were given on particular occasions or were of more local and transitory interest. The paper on the Divine Comedy was read to the Oxford Dante Society; and that on the Aeneid incorporates the substance of two addresses given to the Classical Associations of the University College of South Wales and the Victoria University of Manchester. The greater part of the lecture on Virgil and Virgilianism has already been printed in the Classical Review for May 1908. The Professorship of Poetry is an institution possessed by Oxford alone among the two hundred and fifty Universities of the modern world. It is a Chair which allows its successive occupants an infinite variation of scope, even were it not the case that the import of poetry and the substance of poetical criticism are themselves subject, from age to age, to processes of change and continuous growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Poetry: Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University of Oxford 5 June 1920 This sort Of miracle, this sudden glory, is an escape from the fashion Of the time, and the fashions of poetry, the successive schools are such that escapes are not so difficult as in the other arts. The history of poetry must be the history of schools and fashions. But the progress of poesy does not mean simply the refutation of old schools by new fashions. The poets have sometimes thought so like Keats in Hyperion, possibly; like Dante when he speaks of the Older lyric poetry as distained by comparison with the sweet new style, a'olce stil nuovo, of his own masters and fellows. But apart from the grace that you may find in the older fashion as a whole, taking it as an antiquarian curiosity, there is the chance, the certainty, that here and there among the Old songs you will come upon something new, independent, a miracle. In the old lyric poetry of Provence, which has been made a byword for conventionality and monotonous repetition, there are poems that seem to start afresh, worth dwell ing on and remembering. This is true also Of the other similar school of the German minne singers, which has been equally maligned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry We may presume that by his first epithet Milton intended that simplicity which is another name for sincerity. 'He meant that a poet must look at the world frankly and with open eyes; with the spirit, though with more than the wisdom, of a child.) We sometimes express another side of the same truth by saying that poetry is "universal," meaning that it cares nothing for superficial and transient fashions, but is interested only "in man, in nature, and in human life," in their permanent elements. This first epithet seems to fix beyond dispute an indispensable quality of all poetry. If a writer is insincere, or if he is conventional and fashionable, we are sure, whatever his airs and graces, that he is no poet. By "sensuous" it is probable that Milton meant what, in more technical language, we should describe as "concrete." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Poetry: Delivered at Oxford I apprehend that the University, though she exacts nothing of the kind, in some degree expects that those whom she has honoured with her Professorships should give what they have to give sooner or later to the world. Such being the case, I need advance no other reason for publishing these Lectures. The lectures which I have delivered in my time are of course more in number than those contained in this volume, but owing to a variety of accidents my manuscripts fell into confusion, and have many of them gone astray. I am obliged, therefore, to content myself with what comes readiest to my hand. Of the Lectures that are missing I rather regret some, particularly two on 'Jason and Medea' and one on the tragedy of 'Hamlet.' My examination of 'Hamlet' ought to have come in between what I say of 'Othello' and what I say of 'Macbeth, ' and its absence leaves rather a disastrous gap in the Shakspere series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poets and the National Ideal: Four Lectures The four lectures which comprise this volume were delivered during the winter before a familiar audience. They make no pretension to scholarship, and were not written with a view to publication. But in the present crisis the humblest citizen is anxious to contribute, as best he can, to the service of his country; and the student of English literature can perhaps do no better than help to set in circulation those ideas and emotions which have stirred our greatest poets in periods of national stress, and made them the mouthpiece of the finest spirit of their times. What they wrote, each for his own age, has lost little of its value; for much as we need to-day all the physical and material strength that we can command, we need still 'more ideas and inspiration and our patriotism will be both wiser and more devoted if we learn to draw upon the immense spiritual resources of our poetry, which are not the least glorious nor the least precious part of our heritage as Englishmen. It is in the hope that these lectures, despite their obvious limita tions, may awaken a few readers to a fuller sense of that heritage and all that it implies, that I have decided to publish them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Poetry The point of view maintained in the present volume was reached in the course of discussions with a class of students of English literature in Harvard University. Much of whatever value the ideas here presented may possess is due to the questions and criticisms offered by members of the class, and by a few friends to whom they have been submitted. The form in which they now appear is practically that in which they were delivered as lectures at the Lowell Institute in the spring of 1911. I have taken some pains to remove the more obvious traces of oral delivery, but I fear that it has not been possible to disguise altogether the didactic tone due to their academic origin.
