Book excerpt: Excerpt from Before the Lost Arts and Other Lectures But other explorations have proved the existence of more numerous and more wonderful tools and even machines at a much more remote period. It is well known that the beginnings of science were in the cells of the alchemists and astrologers. The most ancient implements and machines referred to are found in connection with more ancient cells, where they were wrought centuries before Venice worked in glass or Egypt built her pyramids. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Lectures on Ancient History History examples more or less applicable to our own times and circumstances, from which we may learn the probable effects of various lines of conduct in affecting the interests of states: but here too the lessons are but imperfect, and the inferences easily to be evaded, or altered, by slightly heightening or depressing the prominence of this or that particular in each story. However, be it granted that in many ways, like these, History does directly contribute to great and useful purposes; still these benefits will not account for its great and universal hold on mankind. Surely the true and real principle of our interest in the past lies in this, - that we, and all those who have lived before on the earth, are one great Family; separated indeed in point of time, and often in place and country, but still all related together by many ties: and above all, that though some are departed from the earth, yet all are alive - we indeed alone in the flesh, but they too in their respective places truly, really, and immortally alive. It is this inward sense, this instinctive consciousness, which make men, who lived and were tried and tempted like ourselves, our brethren. Thus we are, and feel that we are, much bound to the dead. Even the heathen dead shared with us so many of those things which are most important to us, - bodies and souls like ours, desires and dangers, a natural law of virtue and self-government, and many offences against it, -and above all, a real immortality, leading to a real judgment, -that they are truly our brethren, truly and ten derly allied to us. Still more closely bound to us, and by more sacred and mysterious ties, are the Christian dead, - the whole number of those, who, being members with us of the Body of Christ, have gone through their trials upon earth, and are now waiting, soon to be joined by ourselves, for their last and endless doom. And of these, our own countrymen are the nearest to us of all nearest, from the actual bond of blood and country that is between us; nearest, from their sharing in that national oneness which all men acknowledge, and which God hath ever recognized in His dealings with Nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Greek Historians: Harvard Lectures This volume consists of the Lane Lectures which I had the honour of delivering at Harvard Uni versity in Spring 1908, under the auspices of the Classical Department. They are printed very nearly as they were originally written, though some of my kind hearers, if they should glance through, may detect a good many passages which were omitted in the Lecture Hall. The book amounts to a historical survey of Greek historio graphy, down to the first century b.c., and such as it is, I dedicate it to Mr. Gardiner M. Lane, who founded the lecturership some years ago in the interests of humanistic study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arts of Ancient Egypt: A Lecture Delivered Before the Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts Another foreign Introductlon was the burlal of Slave images. In the tombs of the period of the Empire images are generally found, bearing in either hand a hoe, and with a basket on the back an inscription around them recording that they were to be vivified in the future state, and work for the deceased person, cultivating his fields with the hoes and carrying the earth in the basket. Now these figures, which are found by the hundred in the later times of the Empire, are absolutely unknown in the Old or Middle King dom before the Hyksos invasion, and the earliest examples, Dr. Birch thinks, may belong to the eighteenth dynasty: the beginning of the Empire. These figures are evidently cheap substitutes for Slaves immolated at the grave of their master, to accompany him to the future world, a sub stitution in the same Spirit as the use of paper dollars by the Chinese in their ancestral offerings. And when we think of the ghastly Scythic funerals described by Hero dotus, and consider that during historic times we know the Scythians to have made inroads in the'southern parts of Asia, we can hardly fail to regard this ceremonial slave burial appearing first after the Hyksos invasion, as another of the Asiatic ideas imported into Egypt, and perhaps adopted by the Hyksos originally from more northern tribes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy Of the Lectures which follow, the most original are those on Plato and the Platonists, which fill nearly the whole of the second volume. They are, unquestionably, as the Author informs us, the result of patient and conscien tious examination of the original documents; and they may be considered as a perfectly independent contribution to our knowledge of the great master of Grecian wisdom. Of the Dialectic and Physics of Plato they are the only exposition at once accurate and popular with which I am acquainted; being more accurate than the French, and incomparably more popular than the German treatises on those departments of the Platonic philosophy. The Author's intimate familiarity with the metaphysical writings of the last century, and especially with the English and Scotch school of psychologists, has enabled him to illus trate the subtle speculations of which he treats in a manner calculated to render them more intelligible to the English mind than they can be made by writers trained solely in the technicalities of modern German schools, or by those who disdain the use of illustration altogether. To the Ethics and Politics of Plato equal justice has not been done, but from notes which have come into my possession I am inclined to think that this defect was in a great measure supplied in the unwritten Lectures on Ethics to which allusion has been made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Studies of a Great Inheritance: Being Lectures on the Modern Worth of Some Ancient Writers The lectures contained in this volume, though they range over several subjects, are connected by a purpose which was present in them all. They were designed to represent, as far as the conditions of a popular lecture allowed, some of the elements in the work of the great ancient writers, especially those of Rome, which make their study of permanent value; and in particular to indicate as clearly as possible how much in the ethical framework of modern society may be traced directly to their teaching. Among the authors here studied the poet Vergil' has the chief place. Through and from his poetry the main current of gracco-roman influence has passed -to the mediaeval and modern world. Yet for this very reason the lectures devoted to Vergil are by no means concerned with him alone. Indeed, one of their objects has been to correct the natural, but unfortunate, habit of reading what he wrote as if it had no relation to the times in which it was written and to the work of his predecessors.
