Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Legal, Political and Historical, on the Sciences of Law and Politics: Home and Foreign Affairs; And John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount of Dundee, and His Times However, in consequence of the vacancy which will shortly occur in the parliamentary representation of Dundee, or, at least, in consequence of the opportunities which, I hope, will arise at, or before, the next General Parliamentary Election, I do not feel that there is any imperative necessity for explaining my political opinions at present. With pertinacious obstinacy, I have explained, in Dundee and elsewhere, what these are, and have made no secret about my preference to represent my native town of Dundee, in the House of Commons, rather than any other constituency. At the General Election of 1885, I thought my time for contesting Dundee as an independent Conservative candidate had, at length, arrived. But, although I had issued my address to the Electors, I retired from the contest in order to give the official Conservative candidate the advantage of having no Conservative opponent, and to save myself the expense of an unsuccessful contest, and, as future circumstances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a certain time the society thus founded on kindred or common religion or both, becomes aware that its union is a thing valuable for its own sake, that government and organisation and co-operative life are useful in themselves to the individuals who possess them. Hence there springs up the conception of a common good, a common weal, which is independent of such considerations as kindred or religion; by degrees the society disengages itself from these props...-from Introduction to Political ScienceOne of the most important and respected historians of his day was also a beloved professor at Cambridge University, where his classes and lectures were famous for their clarity and enlightenment. It's easy to see why students clamored to be taught by Seeley: in this collection of lectures, delivered in the late 1880s and early 1890s and published posthumously in book form in 1896, he shares his thoughts on methods of studying the past in with such clear-eyed lucidity, in such warm and jargon-free language that complicated concepts are rendered perfectly plain. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Seeley's lectures on The Expansion of England.British classical scholar SIR JOHN ROBERT SEELEY (1834-1895) was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and an honorary member of Historical Society of Massachusetts. He is also the author of Ecce Homo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the way in which legal historians and legal scientists used the past to legitimize, challenge, explain and familiarize the socialist legal orders, which were backed by dictatorial governments. The volume studies legal historians and legal histories written in Eastern European countries during the socialist era after the Second World War. The book investigates whether there was a unified form of socialist legal historiography, and if so, what can be said of its common features. The individual chapters of this volume concentrate on the regimes that situate between the Russian, and later Soviet, legal culture and the area covered by the German Civil Code. Hence, the geographical focus of the book is on East Germany, Russia, the Baltic states, Poland and Hungary. The approach is transnational, focusing on the interaction and intertwinement of the then hegemonic communist ideology and the ideas of law and justice, as they appeared in the writings of legal historians of the socialist legal orders. Such an angle enables concentration on the dynamics between politics and law as well as identities and legal history. Studying the socialist interpretations of legal history reveals the ways in which the 20th century legal scholars, situated between legal renewal and political guidance gave legitimacy to, struggled to come to terms with, and sketched the future of the socialist legal orders. The book will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers working in the areas of Legal History, Jurisprudence and Philosophy of Law and European Studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitutional History of the United States: As Seen in the Development of American Law, a Course of Lectures Before the Political Science Association of the Univerisity of Michigan The following lectures on constitutional law were delivered under the auspices of the Political Science Association of the University of Michigan, in the months of March and April, 1889. The thought occurred to Henry C. Adams, Ph.D., the president of that association and Professor of Political Economy and Finance, that it would be of advantage to the students in the various departments of the University, to hear a course of lectures on the constitutional law of the United States historically considered. In accordance with the thought thus conceived this course was planned, and the interest manifested in it from the beginning was such as to lead to the belief that the publication of the lectures in permanent form would meet, in part, the wants of students of law and of political science throughout the country. The subject to which the lectures relate, the constitutional law of the United States, is a branch of jurisprudence which Chief-Justice Sharswood declared to be "peculiarly the pride and glory" of our country; and it has been said with entire propriety to be "the specially characterizing part of our legal system." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In An Introduction to the Philosophy of Law, Roscoe Pound shows how philosophy has been a powerful instrument throughout the history of law. He examines what philosophy has done for some of the chief problems of the science of law and how it is possible to look at those problems philosophically without treating them in terms of a particular time period. The function of legal philosophy, writes Pound, is to rationally formulate a general theory of law which conforms to the interests, the general security first and foremost, of society. Marshall DeRosa writes in his new introduction that in the light of twentieth-century judicial politics, Roscoe Pound's philosophy of law has prevailed to a significant extent. This book's relevance to appreciating the development of the American legal system in all its complexities - including liability law, contract law, and property law - is in itself notable. But, in terms of understanding the twentieth-century development of the American rule of law, An Introduction to the Philosophy of Law is indispensable. It will make an invaluable addition to the personal libraries of legal theorists, philosophers, political scientists, and historians of American law.
