Book Synopsis Lectures on Invariant Theory by : Igor Dolgachev
Download or read book Lectures on Invariant Theory written by Igor Dolgachev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary goal of this 2003 book is to give a brief introduction to the main ideas of algebraic and geometric invariant theory. It assumes only a minimal background in algebraic geometry, algebra and representation theory. Topics covered include the symbolic method for computation of invariants on the space of homogeneous forms, the problem of finite-generatedness of the algebra of invariants, the theory of covariants and constructions of categorical and geometric quotients. Throughout, the emphasis is on concrete examples which originate in classical algebraic geometry. Based on lectures given at University of Michigan, Harvard University and Seoul National University, the book is written in an accessible style and contains many examples and exercises. A novel feature of the book is a discussion of possible linearizations of actions and the variation of quotients under the change of linearization. Also includes the construction of toric varieties as torus quotients of affine spaces.

Book Synopsis Pointwise Convergence of Fourier Series by : Juan Arias de Reyna
Download or read book Pointwise Convergence of Fourier Series written by Juan Arias de Reyna and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a detailed exposition of Carleson-Hunt theorem following the proof of Carleson: to this day this is the only one giving better bounds. It points out the motivation of every step in the proof. Thus the Carleson-Hunt theorem becomes accessible to any analyst. The book also contains the first detailed exposition of the fine results of Hunt, Sjölin, Soria, etc on the convergence of Fourier Series. Its final chapters present original material. With both Fefferman's proof and the recent one of Lacey and Thiele in print, it becomes more important than ever to understand and compare these two related proofs with that of Carleson and Hunt. These alternative proofs do not yield all the results of the Carleson-Hunt proof. The intention of this monograph is to make Carleson's proof accessible to a wider audience, and to explain its consequences for the pointwise convergence of Fourier series for functions in spaces near $äcal Lü^1$, filling a well-known gap in the literature.
Download or read book Algorithms written by M. H. Alsuwaiyel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem solving is an essential part of every scientific discipline. It has two components: (1) problem identification and formulation, and (2) solution of the formulated problem. One can solve a problem on its own using ad hoc techniques or follow those techniques that have produced efficient solutions to similar problems. This requires the understanding of various algorithm design techniques, how and when to use them to formulate solutions and the context appropriate for each of them. This book advocates the study of algorithm design techniques by presenting most of the useful algorithm design techniques and illustrating them through numerous examples.
Book Synopsis Elliptic Functions and Elliptic Curves by : Patrick Du Val
Download or read book Elliptic Functions and Elliptic Curves written by Patrick Du Val and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1973-08-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of elliptic functions is linked by these notes to a study of their application to elliptic curves. This approach provides geometers with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with aspects of their subject virtually ignored by other texts. The exposition is clear and logically carries themes from earlier through to later topics. This enthusiastic work of scholarship is made complete with the inclusion of some interesting historical details and a very comprehensive bibliography.

Book Synopsis Series Approximation Methods in Statistics by : John E. Kolassa
Download or read book Series Approximation Methods in Statistics written by John E. Kolassa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally compiled for a course I taught at the University of Rochester in the fall of 1991, and is intended to give advanced graduate students in statistics an introduction to Edgeworth and saddlepoint approximations, and related techniques. Many other authors have also written monographs on this subject, and so this work is narrowly focused on two areas not recently discussed in theoretical text books. These areas are, first, a rigorous consideration of Edgeworth and saddlepoint expansion limit theorems, and second, a survey of the more recent developments in the field. In presenting expansion limit theorems I have drawn heavily 011 notation of McCullagh (1987) and on the theorems presented by Feller (1971) on Edgeworth expansions. For saddlepoint notation and results I relied most heavily on the many papers of Daniels, and a review paper by Reid (1988). Throughout this book I have tried to maintain consistent notation and to present theorems in such a way as to make a few theoretical results useful in as many contexts as possible. This was not only in order to present as many results with as few proofs as possible, but more importantly to show the interconnections between the various facets of asymptotic theory. Special attention is paid to regularity conditions. The reasons they are needed and the parts they play in the proofs are both highlighted.
Book Synopsis Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology by : Carlo Mazza
Download or read book Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology written by Carlo Mazza and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a motive is an elusive one, like its namesake "the motif" of Cezanne's impressionist method of painting. Its existence was first suggested by Grothendieck in 1964 as the underlying structure behind the myriad cohomology theories in Algebraic Geometry. We now know that there is a triangulated theory of motives, discovered by Vladimir Voevodsky, which suffices for the development of a satisfactory Motivic Cohomology theory. However, the existence of motives themselves remains conjectural. This book provides an account of the triangulated theory of motives. Its purpose is to introduce Motivic Cohomology, to develop its main properties, and finally to relate it to other known invariants of algebraic varieties and rings such as Milnor K-theory, etale cohomology, and Chow groups. The book is divided into lectures, grouped in six parts. The first part presents the definition of Motivic Cohomology, based upon the notion of presheaves with transfers. Some elementary comparison theorems are given in this part. The theory of (etale, Nisnevich, and Zariski) sheaves with transfers is developed in parts two, three, and six, respectively. The theoretical core of the book is the fourth part, presenting the triangulated category of motives. Finally, the comparison with higher Chow groups is developed in part five. The lecture notes format is designed for the book to be read by an advanced graduate student or an expert in a related field. The lectures roughly correspond to one-hour lectures given by Voevodsky during the course he gave at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton on this subject in 1999-2000. In addition, many of the original proofs have been simplified and improved so that this book will also be a useful tool for research mathematicians. Book Synopsis Lectures on Formal and Rigid Geometry by : Siegfried Bosch
Download or read book Lectures on Formal and Rigid Geometry written by Siegfried Bosch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to offer a concise and self-contained 'lecture-style' introduction to the theory of classical rigid geometry established by John Tate, together with the formal algebraic geometry approach launched by Michel Raynaud. These Lectures are now viewed commonly as an ideal means of learning advanced rigid geometry, regardless of the reader's level of background. Despite its parsimonious style, the presentation illustrates a number of key facts even more extensively than any other previous work. This Lecture Notes Volume is a revised and slightly expanded version of a preprint that appeared in 2005 at the University of Münster's Collaborative Research Center "Geometrical Structures in Mathematics".
