Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most impressive thing about Wayne Keller's body of ideas for worship throughout the Christian Year is his boldness. He is bold in demanding that we, his colleagues in liturgical leadership, plan worship that has to do with the reality of our congregations' experience in the world, rather than just leading people through a proper agenda of acts and words that have no bearing on what we do the rest of the week. He is bold in challenging us to bring that real world -- with its pains and its pleasures, its hungers and its feasts, its beauty and its ugliness -- to exposure before the living God. And he is bold in helping us shine the strong, exposing light of the transforming Word on our real lives and on that real world, so that we may move beyond planning worship as a "nice," safe, feel-good routine from which we depart the same people we were when we arrived. We are thrilled by the seriousness and authentic reverence with which this author approaches the planning of worship. Thank God for Wayne Keller and for his deep respect for the central act of the Christian community: the blessed and life-transforming experience of the worship of God. Richard Avery and Donald Marsh Port Jervis, New York Wayne Keller's method creates not only a contemporary appeal, but also effects a congregational involvement so necessary today within the liturgical context. His approach is fresh and practical and yet a reflection consistently of a solid liturgical and homiletical background. Keller has the ability to appeal to the everydayness of congregational experience. Donald Macleod Francis L. Patton Professor Emeritus Princeton Theological Seminary The good humor of Wayne Keller's work helps us feel at home in our imperfect world and feel more empathy for the rough edges of others and ourselves. Wayne's work encourages hope and faith with the way we are. Doug Adams Professor of Christianity and the Arts Pacific School of Religion and Graduate Theological Union A cascade of insights, ideas, suggestions, and plans for stimulating the working pastor's imagination and guiding in worship planning. Robert Coote Professor, San Francisco Theological Seminary Editor, Mustard-Seed Churches Wayne Keller elevates us to an authentic bring-your-warts-and-smiles encounter with the living God... a remarkable year-round resource for the entire worship team. Paul Hackett Former pastor and member, First Presbyterian Church Puyallup, Washington Keller says, "I have seen people bored to death in worship, seemingly because they come to worship as spectators, not as participants. For me no spectators are allowed! Soren Kierkegaard's analogy of worship as drama has guided my thinking and planning." Wayne H. Keller graduated from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He has served pastorates in Pennsylvania, Washington, and Oregon, and has also been the director of a halfway house for recovering mental patients. A member of the Presbyterian Writers Guild, Keller has published several books and numerous articles, and has been a columnist for the Bellingham Herald. He has also appeared frequently on radio and television programs and co-hosted a call-in counseling program and talk show.

Given the regularity with which it is shared, however, and the sameness that its practice inevitably takes, fresh approaches are a constant need. This planning resource addresses the need for new ideas in a familiar setting. Wayne Keller has provided a parade of creative alternatives to liturgy, music, preaching and prayer. Based on the liturgical worship days on the Cycle C lectionary calendar, these resources can enrich worship in congregations whether liturgical or free. A pastor and worship planning team can use the material every week or choose to use it sparingly. A helpful worship planner page follows each Sunday's resources. A hands-on appendix by Warren S. Satterlee II offers practical help for the creation of worship banners for the congregation. Wayne H. Keller is pastor of Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Sedro Wolley, Washington. He has throughout his parish ministry self-consciously endeavored to make the worship experience a lively and meaningful event. He indicates that his teenage son never reported to have been bored at worship when his father was presiding. Wayne Keller is also a regular contributing columnist for Rite Ideas, a monthly worship resource letter published by CSS Publishing Company. Warren S. Satterlee II is an active lay member of Grace United Methodist Church, Arlington, Texas. His artistic work has recently included teaching art concepts, custom designing, logo designing, banner and visual fabrication, and work in print making.

Book excerpt: Bring worship to life! The swell of responsibilities for those who plan worship in communities is restrictive when it comes to dedicating time for creatively planning liturgies. It's one of the easier things to proclaim, yet is a fantastic way to engage as many people as possible. The latest Lectionary Worship Workbook for cycle A from CSS Publishing holds an entire year of worship plans built thematically around the Revised Common Lectionary. Each of these ideas have been tried and tested in a congregational setting and have even been refined with congregational feedback. The invitation to see and engage in worship differently will enliven those participating in praise and devotion in any setting. Lectionary Worship Workbook is a collection of creative, cohesive worship ideas tied to the Revised Common Lectionary. This book is dedicated to the idea of embracing a common set of scriptures and bringing them to life in new and meaningful ways. The text is rooted in and bound to the text of the Bible for its source language, story, and metaphor. This will aid anyone in the preparation and leadership of worship in the Christian tradition. This book fills the need of pastors who do not have the time or talents to dedicate to worship planning but want to use different words and images in worship to elicit a different connection with the members in the congregation. Each season of the church year has a unique theme which connects all of the worship services together. The themes connect both the scripture for the season and the season's purpose as historically created. Lectionary Worship Workbook includes the following: Hymns and contemporary songs Invocations Confession and forgiveness Prayers of the church Offertory Prayers Communion material Pastor DJ Dent is the associate pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He has a passion for creative liturgy and has designed art, dramas, and decoration alongside the spoken word in worship for synod assemblies, congregational worship, clergy conferences, and special events for the last 7 years as a pastor in the ELCA. Linda Holcombe has been directing church choirs of all ages and leading worship bands for almost 30 years. She has been published in music education magazines, and has provided original music resources for Augsburg Fortress Publishers. Ms. Holcombe is currently the Director of Music at Christ Lutheran Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive library of creative liturgical material helps you design worship that transforms Sunday services from empty ritual into an individual, collective experience with the Holy. Julia Ross Strope takes worshipers on a journey to the sacred dimension with words and images that highlight the connection of our souls to God's heart. For every Sunday and other major occasion throughout the church year, this volume provides inclusive and affirming resources - calls to worship, a wide variety of prayers, hymn suggestions, and brief sermon ideas - all specifically based on the day's readings and using contemporary language that connects with the people in your pews. This innovative workbook is a rich source of thought-provoking material that can be used as written or easily adapted to fit your individual circumstances - you'll use it again and again to keep your worship services fresh, passionate, and stimulating. Strope divides the church year into seven motions of spiritual journey corresponding to the seasons: In Motion (Advent) - The calendar cycle begins again, and we are busy enjoying family and friends while anticipating the birth of God's Child. Commotion (Christmas) - When the incarnation is realized, commotion erupts; food and stories, gifts and memories are integral to the celebration. Locomotion (Epiphany) - As the commotion subsides, people integrate gifts into their closets and lifestyles as they move about and seek the Light of the World. No Motion (Lent) - After the flurry of activity of the preceding seasons, we look inward and reflect on what the Divine is challenging us to be and to do. Emotion (Easter) - The time of reflection erupts into new options as the reality of the resurrection transforms life in nature and the human soul. Promotion (early Pentecost) - The period of activity and inner empowerment is projected to the outer world, with a passion to promote justice and tell others about God. Slow Motion (late Pentecost) - Like an agricultural cycle, rest takes over as passion turns into the wisdom gleaned from experience ... and the cycle ends so that a new generative period can begin. Julia Ross Strope serves on the ministry staff of Church of the Covenant (Presbyterian) in Greensboro, North Carolina. She previously served Abington Presbyterian Church in Abington, Pennsylvania, St. John's Presbyterian Church in Durham, North Carolina, and Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In addition to her pastoral work, Strope is an educator and counselor. She is a graduate of Houghton College (B.A.), Duke University Divinity School (M.Div.), and Union Theological Seminary at Richmond (D.Min.), where her doctoral thesis (Sacrotherapy: Healing Through the Visual and Tactual Arts) explored using the arts as ways to experience and articulate adventure with the Holy. Leandra Merea Strope, who provided the hymn suggestions and drew the Celtic knot, is the minister of music at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has earned degrees in Flute Performance from Meredith College (B.M.), in Choral Conducting from the Yale School of Music (M.M.), and has done doctoral work in Choral Conducting and Literature at Indiana University. She has directed ensembles at Meredith, Yale, and IU as well as at numerous churches, and for five years she directed the choral program at Abington Friends School in Abington, Pennsylvania. Leandra also served as the lead teacher of choral music at the Governor's School of North Carolina in Winston-Salem from 1996 until 2005. Melanie Bassett, who contributed the hand drawings on the section heading pages, is an artist and art teacher who lives and works in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preachers must understand the teaching techniques of parable and hyperbole, not to mention having a good background in systematic theology, in order to understand what the Bible's writers really meant.... But our responsibility is also to reduce the complexities of Bible study to such simplicities that our many listeners, ranging from busy young professional people to aging men and women of failing health to youngsters facing a variety of new temptations, can take away a saving word. (from the Preface) E. Carver McGriff provides the tools preachers need for their daunting task with some of the most timely and thought-provoking research on the lectionary texts ever made available. Included for each scriptural lesson in the lectionary are: - A listing of the applicable Revised Common, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal lectionary texts. - A description of the Psalm of the day. - A prayer for the day. - Commentary that is more than academic exegesis -- McGriff brings to the forefront those points in the lessons that relate most poignantly to our contemporary reality. - Suggested sermon titles for each of the three texts for each Sunday. - Themes and suggested directions for preaching on each text. - Several additional illustrations to enliven your preaching. Known in the Indianapolis community as a preacher with extraordinary gifts, it is no surprise at all that this work by Carver McGriff brings remarkable insights to those who look for integrity in their preaching. Carver looks at the texts with a freshness that is sure to stimulate the thought process.... Careful use of these suggestions will bring serendipities to preacher and congregation. George H. Tooze Senior Minister, First Baptist Church Indianapolis, Indiana One of America's premiere preachers, E. Carver McGriff returned home after earning two Purple Hearts during World War II to earn a degree in business administration from Butler University. Following a career as a salesman and business owner, McGriff entered Garrett Theological Seminary, where he was voted Best Preacher by the faculty and graduated with distinction. During his 26-year ministry at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Indianapolis, McGriff spearheaded his congregation's remarkable growth in membership from 900 to 4,400, with average Sunday attendance increasing from 300 to over 1,850. McGriff received an honorary degree from the University of Indianapolis and the Outstanding Alumnus award from Butler University and was voted the Distinguished Alumnus of the year by Christian Theological Seminary. McGriff was also honored in 1993 by the Governor of Indiana with the "Sagamore of the Wabash." His sermons have been distributed nationwide by the United Methodist Publishing House.

Robert Ingram's fertile imagination overflows with a wide range of inspired approaches for presenting each week's Gospel lesson and its main themes, reinforced by visual imagery and recurring references throughout the service. For every Sunday and major occasion throughout the Christian year, Ingram provides greetings, prayers, suggested hymns and choruses, and possibilities for decorating the worship space (including ideas for projected visuals). There's also a wealth of ideas for creative reading and dramatic presentation of scripture, including movement, skits, short stories, and puppet plays. Plus there are extensive suggestions for choral anthems and keyboard music.
