However, until the end of the 18th century proto-pragmatic insights tended to be consigned to the pragmatic, that is rhetoric, wastepaper basket and thus excluded from serious philosophical consideration. It can be said that pragmatics was conceived between 1780 and 1830 in Britain, but also in Germany and in France in post-Lockian and post-Kantian philosophies of language. These early ‘conceptions’ of pragmatics are described in the first part of the book. The second part of the book looks at pragmatic insights made between 1830 and 1880, when they were once more relegated to the philosophical and linguistic underground. The main stage was then occupied by a fact-hunting historical comparative linguistics on the one hand and a newly spiritualised philosophy on the other. In the last part the period between 1880 and 1930 is presented, when pragmatic insights flourished and were sought after systematically. This was due in part to a new upsurge in empiricism, positivism and later behaviourism in philosophy, linguistics and psychology. Between 1780 and 1930 philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and linguists came to see that language could only be studied in the context of dialogue, in the context of human life and finally as being a kind of human action itself.

Mis à part le dernier, tous ces volumes ont été publiés en co-édition par les Presses Universitaires de Lille.Conformément à l'intitulé de la série, Guillaume traite ici à la fois de questions de grammaire particulière, souvent très ténues, et de problèmes connexes relevant de ce qu'il appelle la "grammaire générale", comme par exemple la distinction langue/discours, la congruence du fait de parole (système phonologique) et du fait de pensée (système psychique), dont la recherche est "le véritable moteur de l'évolution linguistique", ou encore le principe de l'unité de la condition de langue en face de la multiplicité des conséquences de discours (les "effets de sens").Parmi les nombreuses questions particulières traitées dans ce volume, on retiendra notamment, dans le plan verbal, l'analyse de la représentation temporelle au mode subjonctif en français, à propos de laquelle est apporté un éclairage nouveau sur le rapport entre la valeur des formes en système et leur valeur en emploi. Dans le plan nominal, à partir du mécanisme d'incidence, Guillaume consacre près de la moitié de ses leçons à la syntaxe de l'adjectif en français.

In linguistics, surprise, like other emotions, has mainly been studied through the syntactic patterns involving surprise lexemes. However, little has been done so far to correlate the reaction of surprise investigated in psychological approaches and the effects of surprise on language. This cross-disciplinary volume aims to bridge the gap between emotion, cognition and language by bringing together nine contributions on surprise from different backgrounds – psychology, human-agent interaction, linguistics. Using different methods at different levels of analysis, all contributors concur in defining surprise as a cognitive operation and as a component of emotion rather than as a pure emotion. Surprise results from expectations not being met and is therefore related to epistemicity. Linguistically, there does not exist an unequivocal marker of surprise. Surprise may be either described by surprise lexemes, which are often associated with figurative language, or it may be expressed by grammatical and syntactic constructions. Firstly, mirror-neurons and, likewise, animal abilities connected with the visual field of their fellows, although they certainly constitute important landmarks, would not require this second mental centre. Secondly, others beliefs would have given rise not only to predicative communicative function but also to pre-grammatical syntax. The inquiry about the evolutionary-historic origin of language focuses on the cognitive requirements on it as a faculty (but not to the indirect causes such as environmental changes or greater co-operation), pays attention to children, and covers other human peculiarities as well, e.g., symbolic play, protodeclaratives, self-conscious emotions, and interactional or four-hand tasks."
