Book excerpt: Unique interdisciplinary approach enables readers to overcome complex design challenges Integrating concepts from chemistry, physics, materials science, metallurgy, and ceramics, Principles of Inorganic Materials Design, Second Edition offers a unique interdisciplinary approach that enables readers to grasp the complexities of inorganic materials. The book provides a solid foundation in the principles underlying the design of inorganic materials and then offers the guidance and tools needed to create specific materials with desired macroscopic properties. Principles of Inorganic Materials Design, Second Edition begins with an introduction to structure at the microscopic level and then progresses to smaller-length scales. Next, the authors explore both phenomenological and atomistic-level descriptions of transport properties, the metal?nonmetal transition, magnetic and dielectric properties, optical properties, and mechanical properties. Lastly, the book covers phase equilibria, synthesis, and nanomaterials. Special features include: Introduction to the CALPHAD method, an important, but often overlooked topic More worked examples and new end-of-chapter problems to help ensure mastery of the concepts Extensive references to the literature for more in-depth coverage of particular topics Biographies introducing twentieth-century pioneers in the field of inorganic materials science This Second Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, incorporating the latest findings and featuring expanded discussions of such key topics as microstructural aspects, density functional theory, dielectric properties, mechanical properties, and nanomaterials. Armed with this text, students and researchers in inorganic and physical chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering will be equipped to overcome today's complex design challenges. This textbook is recommended for senior-level undergraduate and graduate course work.

Book Synopsis Aperiodic Order: Volume 2, Crystallography and Almost Periodicity by : Michael Baake
Download or read book Aperiodic Order: Volume 2, Crystallography and Almost Periodicity written by Michael Baake and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasicrystals are non-periodic solids that were discovered in 1982 by Dan Shechtman, Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry 2011. The mathematics that underlies this discovery or that proceeded from it, known as the theory of Aperiodic Order, is the subject of this comprehensive multi-volume series. This second volume begins to develop the theory in more depth. A collection of leading experts, among them Robert V. Moody, cover various aspects of crystallography, generalising appropriately from the classical case to the setting of aperiodically ordered structures. A strong focus is placed upon almost periodicity, a central concept of crystallography that captures the coherent repetition of local motifs or patterns, and its close links to Fourier analysis. The book opens with a foreword by Jeffrey C. Lagarias on the wider mathematical perspective and closes with an epilogue on the emergence of quasicrystals, written by Peter Kramer, one of the founders of the field.

Book Synopsis Materials Science for Structural Geology by : Mervyn S. Paterson
Download or read book Materials Science for Structural Geology written by Mervyn S. Paterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out the basic materials science needed for understanding the plastic deformation of rocks and minerals. Although at atmospheric pressure or at relatively low environmental pressures, these materials tend to be brittle, that is, to fracture with little prior plastic deformation when non-hydrostatically stressed, they can undergo substantial permanent strain when stressed under environmental conditions of high confining pressure and high temperature, such as occur geologically in the Earth’s crust and upper mantle. Thus the plastic deformation of rocks and minerals is of fundamental interest in structural geology and geodynamics. In mountain-building processes and during convective stirring in the Earth’s mantle, rocks can undergo very large amounts of plastic flow, accompanied by substantial changes in microstructure. These changes in microstructure remain in the rocks as evidence of the past deformation history. There are a number of types of physical processes whereby rock and minerals can undergo deformation under geological conditions. The physics of these processes is set out in this book.
