Download or read book De magnis coniunctionibus written by Abū Maʻshar and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the Arabic, Latin and English text of the major work on historical astrology of the Middle Ages. The text is attributed either to Abū Ma'šar (787-886) or to his pupil Ibn al-Bāzyār, and was translated into Latin in the mid-twelfth century. In eight books (parts) it provides the scientific basis for predictions concerning kings, prophets, dynasties, religions, wars, epidemics etc., by means of conjunctions of planets, comets and other astronomical factors. It is cited frequently by both Arabic and Latin authors. These editions will provide, for the first time, the context of these citations. Aside from its intrinsic interest for cultural history and the history of science, this work provides several details. The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9789004117334).
Book Synopsis The Tyranny of Health by : Michael Fitzpatrick
Download or read book The Tyranny of Health written by Michael Fitzpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topical and controversial The Tyranny of Health exposes the dangers of the explosion of health awareness for both patients and doctors, using straightforward language to explain the latest health statistics and research findings. Michael Fitzpatrick, a full-time inner-city GP, argues from his day-to-day experience in the surgery that health propaganda is having a very unhealthy effect on the nation. Patients are made unnecessarily anxious as a result of health scares which have greatly exaggerated the risks of everyday activities such as eating beef, sunbathing and having sex. Doctors no longer seem content with treating disease but are encouraged by the government to tell people how to live more and more aspects of their lives. Michael Fitzpatrick concludes that doctors should stop trying to make people virtuous. He argues that we need to establish a clear boundary between the worlds of medicine and politics, so that doctors can concentrate on treating the sick - and leave the well alone.
Book Synopsis Municipal Medicine by : John Welshman
Download or read book Municipal Medicine written by John Welshman and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Frankfurt/M., New York, Wien. Studies in the History of Medicine. Vol. 1 General Editor: Charles Webster. This book provides the most comprehensive study yet produced of public health in twentieth-century Britain. Based in part on a case-study of the East Midlands city of Leicester, it explores the history of public health from the early 1900s to the health service reorganisation of 1974. The author examines the economic, political, and social context for health provision in Leicester, and the ideological background to policy in such areas as mental health and slum clearance. Particular attention is paid to the infectious disease of tuberculosis, and to the provision of services for schoolchildren through the School Health Service. This study further explores public health policy under the National Health Service, and looks at the wider relationships of the local authority - with general practice, hospitals and hospital boards, and central government departments. Public health in twentieth-century Britain has until now been comparatively neglected by historians of health care and social policy. This book remedies that neglect, and opens up numerous unexplored areas for further investigation. Contents: Economic, political and social context of public health provision in Leicester - Ideological background to public health - menthal health, birth control, slum clearance - Tuberculosis - School Health Service - Public health and the National Health Service - Wider relationships - general practice, hospitals, central government departments - Conclusion - Bibliography.
