Elle a connu et connaît des tensions qui méritent d'être revisitées et étudiées. En dépit de sa richesse, passée et présente, l'histoire de ce pan du mouvement social reste en grande partie méconnue. Cette méconnaissance s'explique à la fois par la faible mise en valeur d'archives dispersées et par la façon dont s'est construite et écrite l'histoire des sociétés ouvrières et de leurs réalisations. C'est pourquoi il est si important de conserver ses archives et de valoriser son patrimoine. La création d'un Pôle d'histoire du travail et d'économie sociale à Limoges et en Limousin prend appui sur une riche et ancienne tradition unitaire d'organisation sociale, économique et politique. Le Limousin a bien été l'un des creusets de l'économie sociale en France. Notre pays a joué un rôle fondamental dans l'émergence et le développement de l'ESS qui allie fondamentalement le local des territoires, au global international. La journée d'étude au Palais du Luxembourg à Paris le 24 avril 2013, dont les contributions sont ici publiées, témoigne de la vitalité et de l'actualité de l'économie sociale et solidaire. L'ESS est un sujet d'étude à promouvoir, mais c'est aussi un présent et un futur. Il nous appartient d'articuler à la fois la dimension historique et celle de l'action aujourd'hui. C'est ce dont témoignent de manière transversale dans ce volume acteurs de l'ESS, chercheurs, conservateurs, militants et citoyens réunis.
