Having started my research on the connection of the Hydraulis to the roots of the more recent Industrial Revolution at the University of St. Gallen in 1989 over 30 years ago, I continue to identify additional support for it. We do not know whether the beginnings of an Industrial Revolution in Hellenistic Greece would have continued if not cut off by the Roman Empire's conquests. Neither do we know whether the more recent (latent) Industrial Revolution could have risen up again in the 17th-century without Vitruvius or Hero of Alexander's preserved writings. The point of this book is to emphasize with new findings that had the Romans not stopped the growth of science and technology in the Hellenistic Period that it would have likely continued to develop into a full-fledged Industrial Revolution. Secondly, the more recent Industrial Revolution borrowed heavily on the technology and science of the Hellenistic Period. In the true sense of the "Renaissance" 17th-century industrial progress largely picked up the written remnants of Antiquity to be able to continue on after a centuries long caesura.

Viele Versuche führten nicht weiter, einer davon war ein optischer Synthesizer mit selbstgezeichneten Kurvenformen, schließlich das Moogtonium, ein an das Mixturtrautonium Oskar Salas angelehnter, von Robert A. Moog gebauter Synthesizer. Die Entwicklungsarbeit an der Maschine zog sich viel zu lange hin, sodass Brand seinen Traum, ein elektronisches Ein-Mann-Orchester für die Opernbühne zu haben, nie realisieren konnte. 1975 kehrte er nach Österreich zurück, wo er in Langenzersdorf lebte und 1980 verstarb. As a contemporary of Arnold Schönberg and Kurt Weill, Max Brand was a figure shaped by late romanticism, futurism, and the early electronic age. The cultural upheaval caused by the Nazis, from whom he fled from Vienna to Rio de Janeiro in 1937, put an end to a very promising career as an opera composer. In 1940 he settled in New York, where he worked to realize his visions of an electronic music machine for the stage. There were many attempts, which all fell short, one of these was an optical synthesizer with waveforms he drew himself, and finally the Moogtonium, a synthesizer based on Oskar Sala's Mixtur-Trautonium and engineered by Robert A. Moog. But development took much too long, and Brand was never able to fulfill his dream of an electronic one-man-orchestra for the opera stage. In 1975 he returned to Austria, where he lived in Langenzersdorf until his death in 1980.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Building on approaches that have succeeded in applying semiotic principles and methodology to computer science, such as computer semiotics, computational semiotics, and semiotic interface engineering, this dissertation establishes a systematic account for those researchers who are ready to look at hypertext from a semiotic point of view. Rather than a new hypertext model, this work presents the prolegomena of a theory of hypertext semiotics, interlacing the existing models with the findings of semiotic research, on all levels of the textual, aural, visual, tactile and olfactory channels. A short history of hypertext, from its prehistory to today's state of the art systems and the current developments in the commercialized World Wide Web creates the context for this approach which should be seen as a fortification of the connection between the media semiotic approach and computer semiotics. While computer semioticians claim that the computer is a semiotic machine and Artificial Intelligence scientists underline the importance of semiotics for the construction of the next hypertext generation, this paper makes use of a much broader methodological basis. These findings are placed in the context of the commercialization of the Internet. Besides identifying the main challenges for eCommerce from the viewpoint of hypertext semiotics, the author concentrates on information goods and the current limitations for a new economy, such as restrictive intellectual property and copyright laws. Book excerpt: By the 1920s in Central Europe, it had become a truism among intellectuals that natural science had "disenchanted" the world, and in particular had reduced humans to mere mechanisms, devoid of higher purpose. But could a new science of "wholeness" heal what the old science of the "machine" had wrought? Some contemporary scientists thought it could. These years saw the spread of a new, "holistic" science designed to nourish the heart as well as the head, to "reenchant" even as it explained. Critics since have linked this holism to a German irrationalism that is supposed to have paved the way to Nazism. In a penetrating analysis of this science, Anne Harrington shows that in fact the story of holism in Germany is a politically heterogeneous story with multiple endings. Its alliances with Nazism were not inevitable, but resulted from reorganizational processes that ultimately brought commitments to wholeness and race, healing and death into a common framework. Before 1933, holistic science was a uniquely authoritative voice in cultural debates on the costs of modernization. It attracted not only scientists with Nazi sympathies but also moderates and leftists, some of whom left enduring humanistic legacies. Neither a "reduction" of science to its politics, nor a vision in which the sociocultural environment is a backdrop to the "internal" work of science, this story instead emphasizes how metaphor and imagery allow science to engage "real" phenomena of the laboratory in ways that are richly generative of human meanings and porous to the social and political imperatives of the hour.
