Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist wisdom for finding freedom and insight through spiritual practice in the midst of illness and pain. "Let your illness be your spiritual teacher!" Make a statement like that to someone who's struggled for years with, say, rheumatoid arthritis, and be prepared for an eyeroll (at best). To Peter Fernando's credit, he makes that statement, and no such impulse arises. We believe him because he's been there himself and because he backs up the statements with his own real experiences and with real wisdom from the Buddhist teachings. Peter starts by defusing the pernicious belief that anyone is somehow responsible for their illness: You're not "wrong" for being sick. Then, having gotten past self-blame, one can begin to learn self-kindness. From there, one moves to mindfulness practices and cultivating body awareness--even if body awareness is distasteful when the body isn't behaving the way you like. Further topics include getting intimate with dark emotions (fear, despair, the scary future, frustration, grief, etc.), learning equanimity (rejoicing in the good fortune of those who don't share your suffering), cultivating healthy relationships in the midst of everything, and practical advice for living with pain. Each chapter comes with one or more practices or guided meditations for putting the teachings into practice.

Book excerpt: The gift of health and wellbeing given to you at birth by God, is your responsibility to maintain throughout your life, in matters of your heart and mind. When you let hostility or sadness into your life, with no room for acceptance or forgiveness, you open the door for adversity. In the Journey of Freedom from Illness and Disease, author Halina B. Slowik discusses the importance of maintaining positive thought to prevent illness. As a nurse for many years, she understands the importance of taking care of one’s physical health as well as spiritual health. While channeling with the Lord for the last twenty years, she has learned of His teachings and wisdom on this subject. This narrative from the voice of God expresses His deep desire for all to know of His great love for all people. He seeks for all to have wellness of body, mind, and spirit.

Against a backdrop of 1920's rural life, the reader will experience, along with Carol, her dreams, adventures, challenges, romance, and much more. Carol is an only child who lives with her mother and Civil War veteran grandfather on a small farm. Though her family is poor and of little formal education, Carol is rich in spirit and thought. Her colorful descriptions of her everyday life, anecdotes, and adventures are filled with right-on human insight. The reader will share many fun times and exiting adventures as Carol grows, chapter-by-chapter, from a little barefoot girl of 10 into an able young woman of 16. So too will the reader share her challenges, and a couple of heart-wrenching conflicts which Carol must face along her way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this singular firsthand account, a former migrant worker reveals a disturbing system of exploitation at the heart of Canada’s farm labour system. When Gabriel Allahdua applied to the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program in Canada, he thought he would be leaving his home in St. Lucia to work in a country with a sterling human rights reputation and commitment to multiculturalism. Instead, breakneck quotas and a culture of fear dominated his four years in a mega-greenhouse in Ontario. This deeply personal memoir takes readers behind the scenes to see what life is really like for the people who produce Canada’s food. Now, as a leading activist in the migrant justice movement in Canada, Gabriel is fighting back against the Canadian government to demand rights and respect for temporary foreign labourers. Harvesting Freedom shows Canada’s place in the long history of slavery, colonialism, and inequality that has linked the Caribbean to the wider world for half a millennium—but also the tireless determination of Caribbean people to fight for their freedom.

Book excerpt: "In this penetrating analysis of the social attitudes toward various major illnesses - chiefly tuberculosis, the scourge of the 19th century, and cancer, the terror of our own - Susan Sontag demonstrates that "illness is not a metaphor" and shows why "the healthiest way of being ill is one purified of metaphoric thinking." Once tuberculosis was identified as a bacterial infection, it ceased to be a symbol of a romantic fading away or of a sensitive or artistic temperament, and it could be treated and cured. Similarly, we must today cease to think of cancer as a mark of doom, a punishment or a sign of a repressed personality, and recognize it for what it is: one disease among many and often receptive to treatment." -- from back cover.
