Book excerpt: After the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Canterbury on 4 September 2010, the news media were quick to report, with understandable relief, that no lives had been lost. In fact, this first quake killed at least 3000 chickens, eight cows, one dog, a lemur and 150 aquarium fish, and that was only the first of a series of even more catastrophic quakes that were to follow, in which many humans and animals perished. Animals in Emergencies: Learning from the Christchurch Earthquakes provides a record of what happened to the animals during and after these quakes, and asks what we can learn from these events and our response to them. The accounts of professionals and volunteers involved in the rescue, shelter and advocacy of the city's animals post-quakes are presented in the first part of the book, and are followed by the tales of individual animals. These accounts provide an honest and compelling historical record of how Christchurch's seismic activity affected human-animal relationships in both positive and negative ways. We share our lives with a variety of companion animals, including dogs, cats, horses, fish, birds, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs and turtles, and the stories of how the Canterbury earthquakes affected these animals are absorbing, sometimes heart-breaking and often heart-warming. The book also reports on the fate of urban wildlife such as hedgehogs, eels and seabirds, in the aftermath of liquefaction and other damage caused by the more than 20,000 aftershocks since the first major earthquake, and considers the particular risks to animals most vulnerable when disasters strike - those confined on farms and in laboratories.

Book Synopsis National Earthquake Resilience by : National Research Council
Download or read book National Earthquake Resilience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States will certainly be subject to damaging earthquakes in the future. Some of these earthquakes will occur in highly populated and vulnerable areas. Coping with moderate earthquakes is not a reliable indicator of preparedness for a major earthquake in a populated area. The recent, disastrous, magnitude-9 earthquake that struck northern Japan demonstrates the threat that earthquakes pose. Moreover, the cascading nature of impacts-the earthquake causing a tsunami, cutting electrical power supplies, and stopping the pumps needed to cool nuclear reactors-demonstrates the potential complexity of an earthquake disaster. Such compound disasters can strike any earthquake-prone populated area. National Earthquake Resilience presents a roadmap for increasing our national resilience to earthquakes. The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) is the multi-agency program mandated by Congress to undertake activities to reduce the effects of future earthquakes in the United States. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-the lead NEHRP agency-commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to develop a roadmap for earthquake hazard and risk reduction in the United States that would be based on the goals and objectives for achieving national earthquake resilience described in the 2008 NEHRP Strategic Plan. National Earthquake Resilience does this by assessing the activities and costs that would be required for the nation to achieve earthquake resilience in 20 years. National Earthquake Resilience interprets resilience broadly to incorporate engineering/science (physical), social/economic (behavioral), and institutional (governing) dimensions. Resilience encompasses both pre-disaster preparedness activities and post-disaster response. In combination, these will enhance the robustness of communities in all earthquake-vulnerable regions of our nation so that they can function adequately following damaging earthquakes. While National Earthquake Resilience is written primarily for the NEHRP, it also speaks to a broader audience of policy makers, earth scientists, and emergency managers.

Book Synopsis The Post-Earthquake City by : Paul Cloke
Download or read book The Post-Earthquake City written by Paul Cloke and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically assesses Christchurch, New Zealand as an evolving post-earthquake city. It examines the impact of the 2010–13 Canterbury earthquake sequence, employing a chronological structure to consider ‘damage and displacement’, ‘recovery and renewal’ and ‘the city in transition’. It offers a framework for understanding the multiple experiences and realities of post-earthquake recovery. It details how the rebuilding of the city has occurred and examines what has arisen in the context of an unprecedented opportunity to refashion land uses and social experience from the ground up. A recurring tension is observed between the desire and tendency of some to reproduce previous urban orthodoxies and the experimental efforts of others to fashion new cultures of progressive place-making and attention to the more-than-human city. The book offers several lessons for understanding disaster recovery in cities. It illuminates the opportunities disasters create for both the reassertion of the familiar and the emergence of the new; highlights the divergence of lived experience during recovery; and considers the extent to which a post-disaster city is prepared for likely climate futures. The book will be valuable reading for critical disaster researchers as well as geographers, sociologists, urban planners and policy makers interested in disaster recovery.
Book Synopsis Learning from Megadisasters by : Federica Ranghieri
Download or read book Learning from Megadisasters written by Federica Ranghieri and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While not all natural disasters can be avoided, their impact on a population can be mitigated through effective planning and preparedness. These are the lessons to be learned from Japan's own megadisaster: the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, the fi rst disaster ever recorded that included an earthquake, a tsunami, a nuclear power plant accident, a power supply failure, and a large-scale disruption of supply chains. It is a sad fact that poor communities are often hardest hit and take the longest to recover from disaster. Disaster risk management (DRM) should therefore be taken into account as a major development challenge, and countries must shift from a tradition of response to a culture of prevention and resilience. Learning from Megadisasters: Lessons from the Great East Japan Earthquake consolidates a set of 36 Knowledge Notes, research results of a joint study undertaken by the Government of Japan and the World Bank. These notes highlight key lessons learned in seven DRM thematic clusters—structural measures; nonstructural measures; emergency response; reconstruction planning; hazard and risk information and decision making; the economics of disaster risk, risk management, and risk fi nancing; and recovery and relocation. Aimed at sharing Japanese cutting-edge knowledge with practitioners and decision makers, this book provides valuable guidance to other disaster-prone countries for mainstreaming DRM in their development policies and weathering their own natural disasters.

Book Synopsis Lessons from Christchurch by : Carol Mutch
Download or read book Lessons from Christchurch written by Carol Mutch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, in which 185 people died and thousands were injured or made homeless, devastated Christchurch's city centre and surrounding suburbs. They severely damaged the region's landscape and infrastructure. These earthquakes have had significant physical, cultural, social and economic impacts on the city and the region. The earthquakes have been of great interest to scientists and researchers across many fields on local, national and international levels. Whilst multiple forms of inquiry are critical to understand the implications for disaster risk reduction and mitigation strategies, the human stories cannot be left out of such an analysis. This e-book aims to focus on the human stories of disaster response and recovery in order to inform preparedness, prevention, mitigation and management of similar events in the future. This issue brings together papers from researchers working across disciplines, from the humanities and social sciences to emergency medicine and architecture, who have been engaged in documenting the human stories of the Canterbury earthquakes.

Book excerpt: How do health care workers manage disaster on an unprecedented scale? The 2011 Canterbury earthquakes were more challenging to the region's health system than anyone could have expected. The injured needed immediate treatment, buildings and equipment were badly damaged, aftershocks continued to rock the area, and communities were disrupted by flooding, liquefaction and fear. Despite this, many ordinary people - hospital and laboratory staff, general practitioners (GPs), pharmacists and others - accomplished extraordinary things in the aftermath of such devastation. `Rising from the Rubble' gives a compelling account of those who rallied to maintain and rebuild essential health services, maintaining continuity of care for the most vulnerable - from older people to those with kidney failure - as well as dealing with the significant ongoing impact on mental health. From the immediate emergency response after the earthquakes to sustaining health services over the following years in highly demanding circumstances, the stories of medical staff joining forces, collaborating and volunteering are infused with sadness, pride and even joy. Based on interviews with those who lived and worked through the Canterbury earthquakes, and the authors' own experiences, `Rising from the Rubble' is an inspiring testament to commitment and recovery
Book Synopsis Public Inquiries, Policy Learning, and the Threat of Future Crises by : Alastair Stark
Download or read book Public Inquiries, Policy Learning, and the Threat of Future Crises written by Alastair Stark and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of major crises, governments usually turn to expensive public inquiries. Clearly, such inquiries have an important policy-learning mandate. However, despite their high-profile nature and their being the pre-eminent means of learning about crises, we know very little about exactly what inquiries produce in terms of learning, and what factors influence their effectiveness. This book examines the extent to which post-crisis inquiries actually dodeliver effective lesson-learning and thereby reduce vulnerability to future threats. It provides evidence from an international comparison of post-crisis inquiries in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, andthe United Kingdom, which will show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the post-crisis inquiry is an effective means of policy-learning after crises, and that they do consistently encourage policy reforms that enhance resilience to future threats.
