When besieged with that many visuals there becomes a need to be able to "read" what is being thrown at them within seconds. Which means they need to be visual literate. If they are not, they will be considered illiterate. We need to guide students and help them make sense of the world and what they are seeing. In this paper, I integrate second grade California social studies standards with visual literacy to accomplish this. In doing so, students are exposed to various kinds of visual images, people, and historical events. This type of integration pushes students to be critical thinkers and to really understand their own culture and how it relates to others. Globalization has made it imperative that students understand the world around them now and the past as well. It is my hope that with this research and the sample created lesson plans it will bring visual literacy and social studies to the forefront.
