But to what extent did prescriptivism impact ongoing processes of linguistic change? The authors of this volume examine a variety of linguistic changes in a corpus of personal correspondence, including the auxiliary do, verbal -s and the progressive aspect, and they conclude that direct normative influence on them must have been minimal. The studies are contextualized by discussions of the normative tradition and the correspondence corpus, and of eighteenth-century English society and culture. Basing their work on a variationist sociolinguistic approach, the authors introduce the models and methods they have used to trace the progress of linguistic changes in the “long” eighteenth century, 1680–1800. Aggregate findings are balanced by analysing individuals and their varying participation in these processes. The final chapter places these results in a wider context and considers them in relation to past sociolinguistic work. One of the major findings of the studies is that in most cases the overall pace of change was slow. Factors retarding change include speaker evaluation and repurposing outgoing features, in particular, for certain styles and registers.

Book excerpt: Internationally recognized expert on raising and educating boys, Dr. Tim Hawkes shows parents of tween and teen boys how to approach difficult but important conversations. Every parent of a teenage boy knows there are certain conversations they must have with their son but often they put them off--or worse, don't have them at all--because they simply don't know where to start. In Ten Conversations You Must Have With Your Son, Dr. Hawkes provides parents with the essential information you need to negotiate your way through what can often be very difficult territory about the why, what, and how of ten key topics: love, identity, values, leadership, achievement, sex, money, health, living together, and resilience. Each chapter offers suggestions for how you can connect with your sons on these issues while sharing your own experiences and knowledge with your boys. A headmaster of 25 years, Dr. Hawkes is in a unique position to know what goes on inside the minds of teenage boys. He understands what they need to know to best prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities, challenges and demands that life will make on them. Ten Conversations You Must Have With Your Son is the one book anyone with a teenage son should read to help them prepare him for adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honoring the centennial of Sigmund Freud’s seminal paper Mourning and Melancholia, New Models of Bereavement Theory and Treatment: New Mourning is a major contribution to our culture’s changing view of bereavement and mourning, identifying flaws in old models and offering a new, valid and effective approach. George Hagman and his fellow contributors bring together key psychoanalytic texts from the past 20 years, exploring contemporary research, clinical practice and model building relating to the problems of bereavement, mourning and grief. They propose changes to the asocial, intra-psychic nature of the standard analytic model of mourning, changes compatible with contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice. Arguing that the most important goal of mourning is often to preserve, rather than give up the relationship to the deceased, this book provides a more positive, hopeful model. Crucially, it emphasizes the importance of mourning together, rather than alone. New Models of Bereavement Theory and Treatment: New Mourning will be the go-to resource for researchers, clinicians and interested lay people seeking a clear, accessible overview of contemporary mourning theory, useful in their daily lives and in clinical practice. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, grief counsellors, as well teachers, undergraduates and advanced students studying in the field.

Book excerpt: Although it is the chief tool for international policy analysis in an international context, the Mundell-Fleming model has come under some scrutiny as being obsolete and weak in microeconomics. The model is used to study monetary and fiscal policy of various exchange rate systems. New Open Economy Macroeconomics attempts to insert market imperfections and microfoundations into its framework, as an alternative to Mundell-Fleming. However, this new structure has raised its own doubts about its viability as an alternative to Mundell-Fleming. The empirical tests of New Open Macroeconomic models do not result in predictions that fit with available evidence. This testing, though, is still in its early stages and the new models continue to hold some promise. This book assembles a series of papers that take differing points of view in theoretical analyses of macroeconomic policies in open economies. These observations provide a solid framework for study, examine applications in two-country models and try and unite Mundell-Fleming with New Open Macroeconomics. With economics a constant in the forefront of the news, the studies here offer a glimpse at the cutting edge of fiscal researc

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Introduction to International Economics is a non-technical introduction to international economics that builds on the strengths of the first edition. It analyses in a practical way how the internationalization of economic activities influences companies, investors and consumers, as well as foreign and domestic markets. While the book is policy-oriented, the adequate historical and theoretical context is provided. All concepts are discussed in a non-mathematical way and graphic analysis is used to clarify explanations, which makes it ideal for business and MBA students. International economics is attracting ever more attention due to the recent worldwide economic crisis, and this book gives a truly global perspective by discussing real-world examples and case studies from different sectors, including from the Americas, Europe and Asia. New features in this edition include the following: - Updated empirical material - The chapter on balance of payments, the foreign exchange market and their relationship has been completely rewritten - Expanded material on developments in the European monetary integration process - More focus on issues in emerging economies, such as the practice and lessons of currency boards, dollarization, and the occurrence of currency crises
