Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaping Ahead: Advances in Prosimian Biology presents a summary of the state of prosimian biology as we move into the second decade of the 21st century. The book covers a wide range of topics, from assessments of diversity and evolutionary scenarios, through ecophysiology, cognition, behavioral and sensory ecology, to the conservation and survival prospects of this extraordinary and diverse group of mammals. The collection was inspired by an international conference in Ithala, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 2007, where prosimian biologists gathered from Canada, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Madagascar, South Africa, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The meeting reverberated with the passion prosimian researchers feel for their study subjects and with their deep concern for the future of prosimians in the face of ongoing habitat destruction and the burgeoning threat of bushmeat hunting. Chapters for this volume were contributed by researchers from across the globe; they attest to the diversity, vibrancy and rapid growth of prosimian biology, and to the intellectual advances that have revolutionized this field in recent years. Since its earliest beginnings, prosimian research and its resultant literature have had a strong francophone component, and researchers in many prosimian habitat countries are more comfortable reading and writing in French rather than English. French summaries of all chapters have been included. The volume is targeted at researchers, both those entering the field and established scientists, who have an interest in the biology of primates and small mammals. It is also aimed at conservation biologists seeking a deeper understanding of the faunas and conservation developments in Africa, Madagascar and Southeast Asia, and anyone who has an interest in discovering the true diversity of our order, the Primates.

Book excerpt: Every business faces the existential threat of competitors producing cheaper copies. Even patent filings, market dominance and financial resources can't shield them from copycats. So what can we do--and, what can we learn from companies that have endured and even prospered for centuries despite copycat competition? In a book of narrative history and practical strategy, IMD professor of management and innovation Howard Yu shows that succeeding in today's marketplace is no longer just a matter of mastering copycat tactics, companies also need to leap across knowledge disciplines, and to reimagine how a product is made or a service is delivered. This proven tactic can protect a company from being overtaken by new (and often foreign) copycat competitors.Using riveting case studies of successful leaps and tragic falls, Yu illustrates five principles to success that span a wide range of industries, countries, and eras. Learn about how P&G in the 19th century made the leap from handcrafted soaps and candles to mass production of its signature brand Ivory, leaped into the new fields of consumer psychology and advertising, then leaped again, at the risk of cannibalizing its core product, into synthetic detergents and won with Tide in 1946. Learn about how Novartis and other pharma pioneers stayed ahead by making leaps from chemistry to microbiology to genomics in drug discovery; and how forward-thinking companies, including China's largest social media app--WeChat, Tokyo-based Internet service provider Recruit Holdings, and Illinois-headquartered John Deere are leaping ahead by leveraging the emergence of ubiquitous connectivity, the inexorable rise of intelligent machines, and the rising importance of managerial creativity.Outlasting competition is difficult; doing so over decades or a century is nearly impossible--unless one leaps. Ultimately, Leap is a manifesto for how pioneering companies can endure and prosper in a world of constant change and inevitable copycats.

Book excerpt: This book was written for people who probably feel they never need it. Its main purpose is to motivate and encourage the reader, whoever and wherever they are, that it is possible to rise up, do better, and excel as a person. It is easy to get into the trap of daily painful existence, blaming circumstances, the environment, other people, and things around us for our negative outcomes in life. None of us love to remain poor or insignificant. We all want to achieve and attain status in life. We all love to excel, yet very few of us do. The book argueswith compelling stories and evidence from history, science, society, and academiathat human destiny, in its most crude form, is like a garden. When left alone, a garden only grows with useless weeds, but when good seeds are sown in it, the ground is well cultivated, the crops cared for, and the garden teeming lively with crops that feed us well. The author shares with the reader his personal experiences and those of scores of other people in the world to demonstrate the indomitable power of the human being to get better. Spiced with easy, witty poems and scores of true stories, the book convinces the reader of their power to excel. The book does this using sequential themes built around eight instructively captivating chapters as follows: 1. Leap forward and get better. 2. Use you power; you are more powerful than you think 3. Pursue excellence; it is your calling 4. Avoid mediocrity and all its roots 5. Accept that you are different 6. Dedicate yourself to service And when you do all these and you realize it is tough, 7. Take heart; the world seldom cheers excellence 8. Now do this and leap forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes of China’s Great Leap Forward presents contrasting narratives of the most ambitious and disastrous mass movement in modern Chinese history. The objective of the Great Leap, when it was launched in the late 1950s, was to catapult China into the ranks of the great military and industrial powers with no assistance from the outside world; it resulted in a famine that killed tens of millions of the nation’s peasants. Li Zhun’s "A Brief Biography of Li Shuangshuang," written while the movement was underway, celebrates the Great Leap as it was supposed to be: a time of optimism, dynamism, and shared purpose. A spirited young peasant woman, freed from the restrictions of home life, launches a canteen and wins the recognition of authorities and the admiration of her husband. The story—and the film that followed it—made Li Shuangshuang the greatest fictional heroine of the Great Leap. In contrast, Zhang Yigong’s short novel The Story of the Criminal Li Tongzhong, written two decades later, was one of the first works published in China to suggest a much darker side to the Great Leap. A village official leads a raid on a state granary to feed starving peasants; he is later arrested and dies a criminal. Although Zhang stopped short of portraying the horrors of famine, his tone of moral outrage provides a rejoinder to the triumphalism of "Li Shuangshuang." The stories are accompanied by an introduction to the Great Leap and portraits of the two writers, including their recollections of that traumatic time and the creation of their very different heroes.

Book excerpt: Grid computing denotes an approach to utilize distributed resources that are not subject to centralized control. This approach fulfils computing requirements arising within the context of current high-performance computing applications, especially in the field of computational science and engineering. This idea is analogous to an electric power network (grid), where power generators are distributed, but the users are able to access electric power without bothering about the source of energy and its location.Current grid enabling technologies consist of stand-alone architectures. A typical architecture provides middleware access to various services at different hierarchical levels. Computational grids enable the sharing, selection and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources (such as supercomputers, clusters of computers, storage systems, data sources, instruments, people, etc.) and present them as a single, unified resource for solving large-scale computations and data intensive computing applications (e.g., molecular modeling for drug design, brain activity analysis, high energy physics, etc.).Grid computing is a new emerging research area aiming to promote the development and advancement of technologies that provide seamless and scalable access to wide-area distributed resources.
