Book excerpt: A first-order Born approximation is utilized to solve the direct and inverse scattering problems of bounded infinite media with random microstructures. The inhomogeneities of the media properties due to their microstructures are assumed to be small. Relatively simple relations are obtained between the mean-square incoherently singly-scattered signal intensities and the spectral density functions of the media inhomogeneities. These simple formulas can be applied straightforwardly to the nondestructive characterization of material microstructures. Special cases of scattering from an infinite random fluid layer, a flat solid plate and a solid half-space immersed in fluid are studied in the present work. The analyses are valid for materials with random microstructures in general, but our interest here is in polycrystalline materials and detailed analytical and numerical results are given for cubic crystal aggregates. Although the first Born single-scattering approximation is not valid for infinite media in general, we find that it can be applied to some cases, such as those studied here, with satisfaction. It is proved that the validity of the first Born approximation is guaranteed for infinite-layer scattering problems as long as the thickness of the layer is small. As for the case of surface wave scattering from a solid half-space, the applicability of the first Born approximation is evident from the fact that leaky surface wave propagation is a very localized phenomenon. Resonances can occur in the cases investigated here when measuring the scattered signal near some incoherent directions. Due to resonant phenomena one can achieve relatively strong incoherently scattered signals which are otherwise very weak.

Book excerpt: A collection of lectures on a variety of modern subjects in wave scattering, including fundamental issues in mesoscopic physics and radiative transfer, recent hot topics such as random lasers, liquid crystals, lefthanded materials and time-reversal, as well as modern applications in imaging and communication. There is a strong emphasis on the interdisciplinary aspects of wave propagation, including light and microwaves, acoustic and elastic waves, propagating in a variety of "complex" materials (liquid crystals, media with gain, natural media, magneto-optical media, photonic and phononic materials, etc.). It addresses many different items in contemporary research: mesoscopic fluctuations, localization, radiative transfer, symmetry aspects, and time-reversal. It also discusses new (potential) applications in telecommunication, soft matter and imaging.

Book excerpt: Fluctuations in the amplitudes and phases of 20-sec Rayleigh waves were measured for ten earthquakes recorded at NORSAR and for two earthquakes recorded at an 1100-km long linear array in the Southwestern United States. These measurements were compared with the prediction of Chernov (1962), who analyzed the scattering of elastic waves by random inhomogeneities along the source-to-receiver path. Use of this theory enabled the amplitude and phase fluctuations to be related to a statistical description of the random scattering medium. As predicted, it was found that the fluctuations were correlated over a longer distance in the direction parallel to the propagation of the wavefront than in the direction perpendicular to it. This implies by reciprocity that relative Ms within a test site would be better determined at a station in line with the vector between two events than by a station perpendicular to the vector. Certain measurements were incompatible with Chernov's theory, however; these discrepancies may be attributable to multipath arrivals and/or large-amplitude scattering for which the Born approximation is not valid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media, Volume 1: Single Scattering and Transport Theory presents the fundamental formulations of wave propagation and scattering in random media in a unified and systematic manner, as well as useful approximation techniques applicable to a variety of different situations. The emphasis is on single scattering theory and transport theory. The reader is introduced to the fundamental concepts and useful results of the statistical wave propagation theory. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters, organized around three themes: waves in random scatterers, waves in random continua, and rough surface scattering. The first part deals with the scattering and propagation of waves in a tenuous distribution of scatterers, using the single scattering theory and its slight extension to explain the fundamentals of wave fluctuations in random media without undue mathematical complexities. Many practical problems of wave propagation and scattering in the atmosphere, oceans, and other random media are discussed. The second part examines transport theory, also known as the theory of radiative transfer, and includes chapters on wave propagation in random particles, isotropic scattering, and the plane-parallel problem. This monograph is intended for engineers and scientists interested in optical, acoustic, and microwave propagation and scattering in atmospheres, oceans, and biological media.
