Book excerpt: An examination of theoretical and empirical directions in leadership in business, industry, and government, this collection of symposium papers presents a view of the much-discussed but little-researched charismatic leadership notion. Four major divisions include discussion and summary integrating material, thus providing review, evaluation, and perspective on leadership, along with critiques advanced by participants. A final section presents an overview of the "sharpeners" and "levelers"--those approaches seen as productive in new directions and those seen as probable dead ends in terms of advancing the field. Contributors include Kathryn M. Bartol, D. Anthony Butterfield, John P. Campbell, Fred Dansereau, Jr., McDonald Dumas, Martin G. Evans, William M. Fox, Robert J. House, Charles N. Greene, Steven Kerr, Arlyn J. Melcher, Marshall Sashkin, Chester A. Schriesheim, William E. Scott, Jr., Henry P. Sims, Jr., John E. Stinson, Peter M. Storm, Andrew D. Szilagyi, and William M. Vicars. This book is Volume 4 of the Southern Illinois University Leadership biennial symposia series initiated in 1971.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Leadership is not a "one size fits all" thing. Often, leaders must adapt their style to fit a situation or a specific group. Therefore, it is useful to gain a thorough understanding of the cutting-edge leadership styles. Cutting edge leadership styles are advancements of other leadership style to meet the requirements of a business which becomes more and more speeded up. Four different styles will be analyzed: The situational, charismatic, visionary and supportive leadership style. The situational one focuses on the maturity level of the follower and the leader can decide between four approaches which fit the most to the maturity level. The charismatic leadership style is more or less a nature given talent which cannot be trained. The leader needs to have the talent to deal with people in a very special way to motivate them, especially in critical situations. By practicing the supportive leadership style the leader’s behavior expresses concern for the followers and their individual needs and each follower is considered individually. The visionary leadership style is supposed to transmit energy to the employees by giving them a sense of hope and confidence in achievin a certain vision. But all in all there is no right or wrong leadership style and it needs to fit to the follower, the situation as well as to the leader. Also a good leader varies with many different leadership styles because every situation has its peculiarities and needs handled always differently.

Book excerpt: How organizations can anticipate threats, spot opportunities, and act faster when the time is right; with rich examples including Adobe, MasterCard, and Amazon. When turbulence is the new normal, an organization's survival depends on vigilant leadership that can anticipate threats, spot opportunities, and act quickly when the time is right. In See Sooner, Act Faster, strategy experts George Day and Paul Schoemaker offer tools for thriving when digital advances intensify turbulence. Vigilant firms have greater foresight than their rivals, while vulnerable firms often miss early signals of external threats and organizational challenges. Charles Schwab, for example, was early to see and act on the promise of “robo-advisors”; Honeywell, on the other hand, stumbled when Nest Labs came out first with a “smart” thermostat. Day and Schoemaker show leaders how to assess their vigilance capabilities and cultivate insight and foresight throughout their organizations. They draw on a range of cases, including Adobe and Intuit's move to the cloud, Shell's investment in clean energy, and MasterCard's early recognition of digital challenges. Day and Schoemaker describe how to allocate the scarce resource of attention, how to detect weak signals and separate them from background noise, and how to respond strategically before competitors do. The challenge is not just to act faster but to act wisely, and the authors suggest ways to create dynamic portfolios of options. Finally, they offer an action agenda, with tips for fostering vigilance and agility throughout an organization. The rewards are stronger market positions, higher profits and growth, more motivated employees, and organization longevity.

Book excerpt: Full-Spectrum Strategic Leadership: Being on the Cutting Edge through Innovative Solutions, Integrated Systems, and Enduring Relationships articulates how strategic leaders, senior managers, business professionals, aspiring young business leaders, and management students can make dramatic improvements in their endeavors, enrich their knowledge and capabilities, and learn the essential perspectives of strategic leadership and management. In today’s world, strategic leaders regardless of venue have to be confident in their aspirations, holistic in their perspectives, proactive in their strategies and actions, and lead change ahead of the prevailing driving forces. Full-spectrum strategic leadership (FSL) is about being on the cutting edge and leading from the front and ahead of changes in the business environment. It involves creating unique solutions, developing effective and efficient systems, and building enduring relationships with people. Astute strategic leader embrace opportunities, overcome challenges, and eliminate threats before others are even aware of the underpinnings of change. They are capable, confident, and courageous when developing and deploying strategic innovations. Strategic innovations are essential in creating sustainable success and extraordinary outcomes. The book examines cutting-edge leadership and management constructs and practices. It describes how to create value across space and time and how to sustain success in a more turbulent and global business world. It explores how to lead change through insights, imagination, and innovativeness. It describes what a solution is and how to design, develop, validate, and deploy solutions that are on the cutting edge. It details how to establish integrated value systems that are inclusive and how to build enduring relationships. The book describes theories, constructs, models, insights, and practices based on multifaceted perspectives and holistic management. Given the current level of obsolesces in theories and practices in today’s business world, FSL presents cutting-edge leadership and management constructs for becoming more sophisticated and successful in a turbulent business world. Given the prevailing business realities, strategic leaders are creating, innovating, developing, improving, growing, and sustaining success or they are falling hopelessly behind. FSL is the never-ending desire to accomplish more and provide more beneficial outcomes for people. It is based on the recognition that good is never good enough, that the needs, wants, and expectations of tomorrow are expected to be more challenging than those of today, and that strategic leaders have to provide solutions to the myriad of problems, concerns and issues. It is also based on the multifaceted perspective that such challenges are really opportunities for excelling and creating value for everyone. Truly great strategic leaders provide solutions and systems that maximize the positives and minimize the negatives. They embrace corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and sustainable success. Truly great leaders make the world a better place.
