Book excerpt: The document is concerned with an esteem for one's least preferred co-worker (LPC) scale as positively correlated with an individual's cognitive complexity. This hypothesis was tested in a variety of ways. The LPC score was correlated with a measure of cognitive complexity. High LPC subjects also were rated in their complex cognitions in making judgments about task settings against low LPC subjects. And finally, high LPC subjects' complex cognitions in perceptions of actual behavior and of other co-workers were evaluated. This information was integrated into a theory of leadership effectiveness. Book excerpt: The investigation of group creativity under stress involved 54 three-man teams, half with relationship-oriented (high LPC) and half with task-oriented (low LPC) leaders. The groups were assigned to work under conditions of either low, internal or external stress. Scores for leader consideration and initiation of structure behavior were derived by content analysis of typescripts and related to group performance and LPC scores for the three stress conditions as well as for three levels of leader group atmosphere scores. Leader behaviors as rated from typescripts were uncorrelated with LPC and with group performance scores and even with corresponding scores obtained by group members' descriptions of their leader. The frequency of rated considerate leader behaviors markedly declined under experimentally induced stress conditions while stress, task and group atmosphere scores interacted in affecting rated initiation of structure behavior. The results further support findings which indicate that the leader's behavior is to a large degree situationally determined. The study suggests, therefore, that situationally determined leader behaviors should not be confused with leadership styles which are presumably characteristic of the particular leader. (Author).

As a conse quence, the topics covered in the upcoming chapters were chosen from among those traditionally of interest to the discipline of social psychology. A criterion for inclusion was the topic's usefulness in providing insights and/or understand ing ofthe social processes at work in sports settings. To this end, I have drawn ex tensively from mainstream journals in social psychology (e. g. , Journal of Per sonality and Social Psychology), and grounded the discussion of topics and issues on the methodologically sound studies/experiments they generally provide. There is also an equally strong interdisciplinary emphasis that features research from physical education, sociology, management science, and education. I have made a further attempt, not as successful as I would have liked, to incorporate a substan tial amount of the fine sports research that has been conducted overseas, particu larly in Europe and Australia. I am hopeful that in bringing together the works of international scholars from a variety of disciplines a clearer and balanced outline of this field will take shape. And now a word about the audience for this text and how to get the most from its pages. I would suggest that the reader have taken a course in social psychology following an introductory-level course. An introductory course in research methodology would also be helpful.
