Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiji, Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific region are experiencing a ‘youth bulge’. As such, the livelihoods pathways of youth in these countries will be a key determinant of their social, political and economic futures. This book looks at the cultural expectations of Fijian and Solomon Islander youth, as well as the socio-political positioning of youth activists. It investigates how formal and informal structures – such as education, employment and civil society – affect the ability of youth to achieve their potential and actively engage in their societies. Through this investigation, a recurrent theme develops of the structural minimisation of youth in these countries: they are ‘to be seen but not heard’. But Pacific youth are more than citizens in waiting; they are already important members of their communities, with varying degrees of engagement in critical civil society. More than simply leaders of tomorrow, they are partners for today. Youth in Fiji and Solomon Islands documents and details some of the ways that young people in Fiji and Solomon Islands are forging their way as leaders not just of youth, but of their communities. Whilst the majority of youth are engaging in society in acceptable, social ascribed ways, and the majority of adults resist youth participation as a technique to maintain the social status quo, a small but influential cohort of both youth and adults are creating spaces for today’s young people to help to shape the developmental futures of the Great Ocean States of the Pacific.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicians everywhere tend to attract cynicism and inspire disillusionment. They are supposed to epitomize the promise of democratic government and yet invariably find themselves cast as the enemy of every virtue that system seeks to uphold. In the Pacific, "politician" has become a byword for corruption, graft, and misconduct. This was not always the case—the independence generation is still remembered as strong leaders—but today's leaders are commonly associated with malaise and despair. Once heroes of self-determination, politicians are now the targets of donor attempts to institute "good governance," while Fiji's 2006 coup was partly justified on the grounds that they needed "cleaning up." But who are these much-maligned figures? How did they come to arrive in politics? What is it like to be a politician? Why do they enter, stay, and leave? Drawing on more than 110 interviews and other published sources, including autobiographies and biographies, Being Political provides a collective portrait of the region's political elite. This is an insider account of political life in the Pacific as seen through the eyes of those who have done the job. We learn that politics is a messy, unpredictable, and, at times, dirty business that nonetheless inspires service and sacrifice. We come to understand how being a politician has changed since independence and consider what this means for how we think about issues of corruption and misconduct. We find that politics is deeply embedded in the lives of individuals, families, and communities; an account that belies the common characterization of democracy in the Pacific as a "façade" or "foreign flower." Ultimately, this is a sympathetic counter-narrative to the populist critique. We come to know politicians as people with hopes and fears, pains and pleasures, vices and virtues. A reminder that politicians are human—neither saints nor sinners—is timely given the wave of cynicism and disaffection. As such, this book is a must read for all those who believe in the promise of representative government.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this grounded theory study was to describe the leadership model second level Indigenous Fijian leaders employ to shuttle between villagers and Westerners. This type of systematic design approach is appropriate due to the requirement to gain a deep understanding of the perceptions of this South Pacific leadership community. The Indigenous Fijian leaders shuttled from a pre-colonial to colonial to post-colonial society without losing their established methods of leadership or land ownership. This method of shuttling was accomplished without debilitating regional conflict. The terms politeness, food gathering, people mapping, love, village interaction, and volunteerism were revealed as positive personal definitions of the shuttle model used by Fijian Indigenous second level leaders. In conjunction, the personal definition rudeness was the negative term associated with the shuttle model used by Fijian Indigenous second level leaders.

Book excerpt: Amidst a changing geopolitical environment, issues of domestic politics, social concerns, as well as climate change related risks, the Pacific island nation of Fiji has set out on a path to reconcile its troubled past with ambitions of achieving regional leadership. The message seems clear: Suva will neither recede from seeking a leading role in the Pacific region nor will it be a pawn in a game of great power competition despite the growing economic pressure it faces.

Book excerpt: "Dr Lal's book is more than an eloquent account of the political struggle of one of Fiji's outstanding leaders. It is a timely reminder that the process of constitutional change hangs in the balance, as it did at the time of Mr Patel's death. I hope his example will inspire future generations in Fiji to realise the vision articulated by a brilliant and courageous advocate of democracy, and a loyal son of Fiji." - Late Adi Kuini Bavadra

Book excerpt: Rugby with the stunning Fiji team not only gave me the opportunity to experience diversity in the highest form but inspired me to share my experiences living in Fiji a paradise and well known tourist destination once known as the way the world should be also sharing my experiences living in the USA the most prosperous powerful nation on Earth, while having a blast in one of the most vibrant cities of the world, Las Vegas. Growing up as a child on a copra plantations owned by part European families I lived a fun and exciting life with some challenges and was influenced by the European culture and their language and religion A year at high school in an Indian dominated society saw me struggling to adapt to this environment attending high school with students mainly ancestors of the indentured laborers who were very competitive which made me strive for higher standards through discipline. My personality allowed me to connect with people easily and the opportunity to take part in a carnival gave me exposure not only to be in the public eye but to enhance my leadership skills and to meet with prominent people including the governor general of Fiji Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau who later became the president of the country. Anthony Robbins the world known motivator and owner of the exclusive Namale plantation resort who I met personally inspired me to improve the quality of my communication through his book unlimited power which helped me to deal with many sensitive issues like depression, death and suicide and gave me the power to be a great leader by having a great bonding power that helped me to connect with my people to bring the best out of them. The life at an exclusive world known 5 star resort gave me the opportunity to meet the famous world environmentalist Jean Michael Cousteau and to get a taste of luxury and pampering and also to experience the hospitality of the Fijian people who are dedicated to providing outstanding service with a personal touch making Fiji one of the best tourist destinations of the world. Destiny and a true love story brought me to the USA the land of hope exposing me to a quality of life with high standards and gave me an understanding of the American dream which is about owning your own home while learning to adapt to a new environment and family and a career in banking, Recognition which is a key element in this society saw me with a gold medal presented in Hawaii for my outstanding sales and customer service skills giving me a chance to be part of a royal celebration of excellence and then becoming one of the leaders of the bank managing in a dynamic and changing environment. My inspiring management style helped me to overcome many challenges including managing people through so much change in an economy that was constantly declining and a massive lay off and with the so many opportunities out there I am now going to think a big picture, take a different route to break new ground and will find a whole new world to conquer.
